The Winter Olympic city of Sochi is bidding to host the 2017 World Figure Skating Championships, a Russian skating official said Tuesday. Alexander Gorshkov, the president of the Russian Figure Skating Federation, said the event should be held at the 12,000-seater Iceberg Skating Palace in the Sochi Olympic Park.
"We've submitted a bid to the International Skating Union that we want to receive the 2017 world championships in Sochi," Gorshkov said.
"Everything was in accordance with the procedure, now we await the response from the ISU," he added.
This year's championships, held a month after the Sochi Games, took place in Saitama, Japan. Next year the event stays in Asia with Shanghai before traveling to the TD Garden in Boston for 2016.
Russia last staged the championships in 2011, when the event was moved to Moscow from Nagano, Japan, in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami that reportedly caused at least 15,000 deaths and the Fukushima disaster.

Relax, kids. Sochi GPF was fine. Putin's not gonna spend $50 billion fixing a piddling World Championships, and the hockey fans won't be there chanting RO-SSI-YA.

Smart, going for the one before pyeongchang, it'll set the stage for the Olympics. Who else is bidding for '17?

Plus, aside from the mess that was Sochi :rolleye: generally FS in Russia's not that bad.

Russian hockey team got screwed out of a victory by the referee in the game against USA yet that wasn't able to be prevented by so called corruption.

Personally I like the Rus crowd and the Rus si ya chants. I watched every event and felt the crowd was fine. Is it a benign of a crowd to Japan? Of course not, but none of these other countries are compared to them.

I don´t think Sochi should be host for world championship. If anything what happened after Plushenko retirement in the men event show how little passion Sochi public has for figure skating.

If it became tradition wouldn't the US had Worlds in 2001?

But according to your theory 2009 should have been Italy. & given that Sochi is only bidding, with strong competition from Helsinki & maybe other countries yet to announce, your "tradition" is in fact a one off.

Yes. The "sport" could use the ratings and drama leading up to the 2018 Olympics in Korea. ISU should merge with WWE and promote Vince McMahon as president. And bring back Tonya Harding. Maybe make her a judge.
