Rank the winning Ladies performances at Worlds and Olympics for the last four years

By scores: 1. Sotnikova 2014 Olympics: 224.59
2. Kim 2013 Worlds : 218.31
3. Asada 2014 Worlds : 216.69
4. Ando 2011 Worlds : 195.79
5. Kostner 2012 Worlds : 189.94

The Quad opened in Moscow in 2011 with Ando's 195.79 narrowly beating an underprepared Kim with 194.50. Ando had 5 triples, all judged clean. Out of 108 possible +3 GOE's, Ando was given only 1 +3 GOE in the FS.

In 2012 in Nice, Koster scored a 189.94 for the Gold, beating Leonova in second with 184.28. Many believe this was the least competitive Worlds of the quad. Koster executed 5 triples, all ratified, and received 5 +3 GOE marks in the FS.

The 2013 World's in London, Ontario, featured Kim getting the gold with a 218.31 score, with a healthy margin over Kostner's 197.89 and Mao's 196.47 . Kim executed 6 triples, all judged clean, and received 33 +3 GOE marks in the FS. Kim's acclaimed 2013 performance scored a point below her Sochi silver medal performance which was not as well received.

The 2014 Olympics were officially won by Sotnikova in a controversial decision, scoring 224.59, over Kim's 219.11 and Kostner's 216.73. Adelina executed 7 triples, and all were ratified by the controllers, though of course many on this forum did not find all to be clean. She also received 33 + 3 GOE marks in the FS, the same as Kim in 2013.

The 2014 World's in Saitama Japan were won by Asada with a 216.69 score, beating Julia L. with a 207.50. Asada executed 7 triples, with 4 of the 7 judged clean. Mao received 7 +3 GOE FS scores.

It is clear the scores tended to rise at the end of the quad, along with the number of +3 GOE's. I find it interesting that Ando got a single +3 GOE mark in 2011 in the FS, while Kim and Adelina both received 33 +3 marks at the end of the quad.

Please rate, discuss or compare the 5 winning performances. Was Sotnikovs's the best? Was Kim's 2013 World's the second best? Was Kostner's gold in 2012 the worst (it scored below some of her other World's performances, including below her mistake filled 2014 world's).

In terms of aesthetic appearance, technical prowess, speed, presentation and disregarding the score cards, here's how they rank best to worst:

1. Kim 2013
2. Asada 2014
3. Kostner 2012
4. Sotnikova 2014
5. Ando 2011

Or were you looking for a mathematical breakdown? Because if so I summon the powers of our mighty Mathman to chime in. :)

Pretty much the same ranking as me, if we were to pick their best performances and not just gold medal ones, Mao and Yuna could possibly trade places if I could throw in Mao's Olympic FS, I think she has a slight edge with her beautiful step sequence and I like her spins better (Yuna's I-spin isn't that aesthetically pleasing...) but I love them both, either way, both are on top for me.

Considering both SP and LP from those events:

1. Kim 2013
2. Asada 2014
3. Sotnikova 2014
4. Ando 2011
5. Kostner 2012

(This isn't who I'd consider the best skaters of the quad--simply those particular performances. I kinda want to put Mao ahead of Yuna, screw the bogus downgrades, but Yuna's 2013 performances were truly magical).

I would place Mao ahead of Kim even without including Mao's Olympic LP because of the same reasons you mentioned for the Olympic LP: I prefer Mao's Biellmann, I-spin and arabesque especially and her step sequence. I would add her 2 triple axels (even the judges thought the one in the LP was rotated before the tech crew rudely intruded). I also love Mao's wave-like balletic arm and body motions. I know there was a step-out and a missed triple toe in the Lp, but for me the overall delivery had a lot of heart and rest of the tech content was really outstanding. Besides, the SP was flawless and quite moving for me. I do think Kim's performance in the LP 2013 was quite impressive in an objective sense, but for some reason it doesn't move me that much emotionally. Overall, I would place it like this:

1. Asada 2014
2. Kim 2013
3. Ando 2011
4. Sotnikova 2014 Olympics
5. Kostner 2012

Kim and Asada are definitely the best. Asada wins the SP by far, but her LP was unfortunately overstuffed and unimaginative. The mistake she made at Worlds is enough for Kim to edge ahead overall for me, because that Les Mis performance was sublime. It has to be considered the overall best ladies LP performance of the CoP era.

1. Kim 2013
2. Asada 2014
3. Sotnikova 2014
4. Kostner 2012
5. Ando 2011 (UGH. Very weak programs, nothing special about the presentation or skating skills, and her tech content wasn't great either)

I find it easier to rate according to the execution of the SP and LP separately.

For SP:
1. Asada Worlds 2014
2. Kostner Worlds 2014 (the spins were better centred than the Sochi Olympics)
3. Kim Worlds 2013
4. Ando 2011
5. Sotnikova Olympics 2014

For LP:
1. Asada Olympics 2014
2. Kim Worlds 2013
3. Sotnikova Olympics 2014
4. Kostner Worlds 2012 - above Ando simply for the speed and aesthetics
5. Ando Worlds 2011

SP: I love Kim and Asada 2014, so I put both of them in rank 1. At least Asada scored well in WC 2014, while Kim deserved more at Olympic
FS:
1. Kim 2013
2. Asada 2014
3. Sotnikova 2014
4. Kostner 2012
5. Ando 2011
In fact, I prefer FS Kim 2011 to Ando. It was unique and full of emotion. Kim had strong spins, beautiful footwork, music and cheography. I really want to put Kim 2011 in rank 3

The best competition overall (SP+FS) was of course Yu-Na's in 2013, because she performed everything perfectly (just as in Vancouver), not making a single mistake and, even if those two programs weren't her best, she deserves first place for sure; her Sochi programs are behind for me (probably around 4th-5th place), since she evidently made a small mistake in the FS (not a good landing in the second 3Lz, which was slightly UR) and more than that her programs didn't seem to have the same energy and impact of some of her past performances.
Mao's 2014 competition was really good, too, since she came back after that disastrous Olympic event and skated her best SP ever and a very good FS, but for me Carolina's programs in 2012 are even better, emotionally. Of course she's far far behind Asada in terms of jumps (Carolina had a mistake in the SP and didn't ahve the lutz in the FS), but artistically I think her Mozart FS was the best of the quad, it was the only one that had that sheer quality of holding the crowd in her hands, not wasting a single beat of the music, and really "living" the performance, from the tension in her eyes at the beginning until the pure joy during the step sequence at the end, perfectly following the musical structure of the piece. Janet Lynn, Michelle Kwan or Chen Lu's Rachmaninoff come to my mind as examples of what I mean... Maybe it's because I'm Italian and I'm a big Carolina fan, but I really think that program and that performance were special, more than a lot of things she did before and after it (Bolero was sublime, but it didn't have the same qualities): the perfect one to win a WC.
And then there are Adelina and Miki: the first one really skated wonderfully, but isn't in the same league as Yu-Na, Mao and Carolina artistically, when for Miki her programs were made for the jumps, all she wanted was landing them and skating clean, even if her SP was a huge exception, maybe her only "emotional" program ever.
So, objectively, my ranking is identical to anyanka's, but emotionally I have
1) Yu-Na
2) Caro
3) Mao
4) Miki
5) Adelina

I think I'd go with..

Kim 2013
Ando 2011
Asada 2014
Sotnikova 2014
Kostner 2012

Really, none of them were overwhelmingly great. Kim's and Ando's were clean but didn't have much sparkle, Mao's was very unclean, Sotnikova's was controversial in result and not completely clean, as well as not being artistically wonderful. Kostner was clean, IIRC, but the technical content she included wasn't high, especially for a World Champion.

^In that case, I'd put Mao at #1, no question. Her Worlds SP + Olympics LP should be, imo, unbeatable by anyone in the field right now. Technically unmatched, and huge emotional resonance in both programs.
