Lol, I don't think even Yuna can do Biellmann spin by 2018 (she already doesn't do it much anymore, does she?) Plushy getting it back at 35 would make everyone suspect he's a clone of the original. (Though he did do a catch-foot thingy circa 2010 ).

I think the Crazy Predictions thread is taking over the entire forum.

My favorite is the scene on the mound with all the "problems" of the day. "Candlesticks are always nice" is my family's stock answer when we don't know what to buy someone ever since this movie came out.

I probably should have included this scene, where Nuke proves he learned his cliches:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZprAlFcQLA

I haven't watched that movie in awhile, but I just love it. Costner and Robbins are such great foils for each other, and Sarandon is exquisite.

I always felt that Kristi Yamaguchi was a good example of a skater who was sugar on the outside, steel on the inside. I would love to have been a fly on the wall when she was negotiating her contracts with Stars on Ice

Methinks her agent probably did the negotiating, not Kristi.

Most famous? Oh please, Kwan, Yuna, Mao, Yagudin all have some words to say about that

If we based on that voting contest, so why not also go to Youtube to count some view in there? What world class skater had the most viewed clip? Most like/dislike?

That contest result is a huge question though, why his vote suddenly raised with F1 speed just by the last day, when Yuna's fans didn't pay enough attention at the last minute because she leading all the time?

So no, that result show one thing: Plushenko doesn't have that many supporters, but Yuna have some haters :sarcasm:

He was voted most popular, not most famous. There is the difference between the two. Harding is one of the most famous skaters in history, but hardly that popular.

First, Plushenko can be cocky and arrogant because he's earned the right to be.

Really?! Skaters should exercise humility no matter what level or accolades they achieve. ESPECIALLY skaters who do exceedingly well should have some level of humility in order to be a good role model for the sport. I get that you can't change a leopard's spots, but no elite athlete EARNS the right to be a douchebag who can say whatever they want or disrespect people. They don't get a pass, and if anything, they're held to a higher standard. Chan and Plushenko need to take a page out of Hanyu's book.

Oh, come on. Plushy has been praising younger skaters that he favors for years. He is very supportive of them. Plushy is not a douchebag people used to say about him.

Oh please. Skaters "should" skate well. That is their job as a top athlete. They should be role models with respect to what they put on the ice. "Saint" is nowhere in their job description. As long as they're not, say, scattering crystals on the ice to hinder their opponents, or sending their significant other to the hospital with beatings, I don't particularly care if they're the sweetest, kindest people.

Young kids look at Plushenko and Chan and say: "I want to skate like Plushenko. I want to skate like Patrick Chan." Who the heck says, "I want to be a nice guy like Plushenko/Chan"? Kids should be taught morals and humility by their parents; some distant athlete does not have that responsibility. Idolizing Plushenko doesn't seem to have turned Hanyu into a bad guy, has it?

(Not to mention, Plushenko and Chan don't even seem like particularly bad people. Just blunt and confident, and that's fine by me).

So, what do you think of your precious little Kovtun's latest little moment on Twitter?

I agree with Sandpiper. The expectation that great skaters should be role models is unwarranted. Parents should act as their children's role models, not some stranger one sees on tv. The only high standard athletes should be held to is perform well.

Athletes hold no responsibility to be politically correct or even to be nice. The mastery of their sport is what matters, they are not entertainers where the fans are everything.

You can do what you want and say what you want. But, know this. You are going to be held accountable for your own actions, people will make judgements and you will get backlash if you do not take others into consideration/think before you open your mouth. If you're acting like a douche then people will call you out on it and probably even hate you for it. The public has opinions, and like it or not, their opinions of you are important because it affects your image, which you are dependent on when looking for sponsors and partnerships. You want people rooting FOR you, not AGAINST you.

The image you choose to project yourself as will stick with you throughout your entire career. If you are okay with that and can accept the repercussions of your own actions, then that's that.

I have to admit that I started watching Plushenko's performances specifically because of the kindness and credit he showed to my favorite skater, Mao Asada, after her spectacular LP at Sochi and for his praise of her performances at Vancouver when so many others were only focused on Yuna Kim or Adelina Sotnikova. I also found the episode where he asked Mao to kiss him on the cheek in Vancouver and his reaction to it when asked by a journalist, "You know, I'm married" (even saying that she asked him) to be one of the funniest things I have ever seen any sports figure do. His mock look of surprised innocence was priceless. During this interview, I was also impressed with his high level of English. I am really impressed with is skating as well. He skates with passion, conviction, incredible technical prowess and skates and acts in real life with his heart on his sleeve. In this sense, he reminds me of Mao, though he is a little more humorous and outspoken, whereas she is more humble and reserved.

to Gotoshool! :)

Mao and Zhenya's similarity was noticed by other persons. Maybe you saw this video because another version had many many viewers.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcX89egMCas

They really respect each other:

Mao Asada's official press conference before SP "My respected persons are Midori Ito and @EvgeniPlushenko."(Feb.17th)

Plushy:

after Sochi: Mao - you was great, special thanks for Axel 3,5! You're real fighter!!https://twitter.com/EvgeniPlushenko/status/436580238446034944 more than 41 000 RTs

Congratulation to 3 times world champion Mao Asada 2 beautiful 3A, I am so proud of you, thank you for pushing our sport to the next level

Zhenya said it was Yuzuru's time ( he also said he is a genius :) ). However, his favourite is Mao Asada--she takes risks with the 3A.

Woah, we took over another thread. Sorry, everybody...

To bring things back on topic, to be fair, I don't like to to speak in absolutes. When something is too absolute, it often becomes inaccurate. So I won't say, "Athletes can act however they like," because I admit that if someone were a deranged criminal, I'll find it difficult to enjoy their skating. More like, "Athletes can act however they like, within reason." The people mentioned in the OP (Tara, Ashley, Patrick, Plushy) haven't crossed any lines for me. YMMV if they're good role models, but they certainly haven't done anything to make themselves subpar athletes.

Something like this...

He described Russian sports fans as prostitutes.
...is probably pushing it. What the heck does that even mean?

There is no law requiring athletes, movie stars, etc., to be role models. Still...

Here is the best thing anyone ever said about Michelle Kwan (or anyone):

"She lived her whole life as if a child were watching."
