I'm still warming up to the idea of Vocal music in Figure Skating programs. So many announcements, rumors and news. It is very hard to keep up in different threads. So far I only watched Mirai's FS Madame Butterfly and found myself enjoy it very much.

Please help me update on the latest programs.

Javi's program is great. Loving how the vocals worked in a way that did not detract from the skating.

It going to take some time for me to get used to vocal music, as at the beginning I go into "exhibition" mode.

I think the important thing is that the skaters and choreographers don't go into exhibition mode.

As long as they choose songs/pieces of songs that keep the focus on the skater not the singer, that allow the skater to interpret the music more than the words, and that allow them to include all the necessary technical elements, allowing some vocals can open up more choices. I just hope the skaters and coaches/choreographers choose wisely. The examples in this thread so far seem fine.

There aren't many songs with this type of structure, but I think Avenue of Stars by Prefab Sprout would be awesome skating music all by itself without any editing. It starts with a two minute instrumental "intro" and the second half has vocals. Four minutes, as long as women's LP.

Javier Fernandez's short program:

I think it suits him well.

Whoa. This is fantastic. You don't get to see skaters interpret rock music very often (I still fondly think of Takahiko Kozuka's Jimi Hendrix SP from 2010), but I loved this. This suits him so much better than orchestral music, IMO. I think this is a great way to go for a skater who has good musicality but not classical lines/extension. I bet Max Aaron would be pretty awesome with this type of program, too. I always liked Javier personally but never quite got into his programs, but that will change if he keeps going in this direction.

Thanks for sharing!

Exactly. The whole point of vocals is that they accentuate the program music, not the program music being dependent on the vocals (which gets distracting).

Love Javi's program! I think the mark of a good program is you can never tell where the footwork sequence starts because the rest of the program choreo is complex and interesting. Such a contrast to Hanyu's SP in terms of attitude/tone.

In fact, Max Aaron already HAD used the same Black Betty music for an awesome exhibition program. :) Unfortunately, I could not find a YT vid of Max's 2013 U.S. Nationals ex (first time I saw the program performed), but here are two other versions from last year.

I think gachinski's cry me a river is going to be awesome. Suits him well, if he lands his jumps it will be a big score for him
