One reason why I don't watch much gymnastics--grow too attached, and your favourite's gone in the blink of an eye. Granted, women (and many top men, with... exceptions, of course) tend to retire early in FS too. I should probably find a sport like golf or something, where I can watch people forever.

@Gallavich
But that was the stone ages of figure skating! We probably won't find anyone like that since 1980... Granted, he skated in pairs, so he didn't medal via skating nice figures. So, all credit to him.

The age thing sent me off on a Google tear. ;) As it happens, a 39-year-old ice dancer isn't all that far-fetched: Torvill & Dean were 35-36 when they won bronze in Lillehammer. Overall, it looks like there's more longevity in pairs & ice dance than in singles; the Protopopovs also won Olympic medals in their 30s. Joseph Savage takes the cake, though!

And Carolina's bronze @ age 27 ain't shabby, either...

Equestrian events, too; riders compete into their 60s and possibly beyond. Britain's Princess Anne, who rode w/ the British equestrian team in 2012, was 62 at the time. IIRC, she even medaled.

Princess Anne was on the 1976 team. It was her daughter, Zara Philips, who was on the 2012 team.

Well, Torvill/Dean, the Protopopovs (and I'll add, Shen/Zhao)... all legends, and have been skating in their respective disciplines for a long time. Nonetheless, good encouragement for future generations. :agree:

Ouch! (wipes egg off beet-red face) I was so sure it was the Princess herself that I didn't bother to fact-check. Thanks for the correction...

Plushy says he doesn't want his sons to compete in figure skating... but I guess you didn't say they'd be competing in the same sport.

You are right, but we know these videos..

His first son's last name isn't Plushenko though. :)

Plushy says he doesn't want his sons to compete in figure skating... but I guess you didn't say they'd be competing in the same sport. (Has this ever happened before--a parent and child, regardless of which sports, competing in the same Olympics? I assume it can happen if the parent does shooting.)

Why is his last name not Plushenko? Does the child take the mother's last name in Russia?

They were very young when they got married. Plushy 22 Maria was 20 years old in 2005. Everyone was against the marriage but they got married. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C86ECiA7iVI

Maria quickly became pregnant when Plushy won the gold in Turin was already pregnant. They fought continously, Maria was very jealous and she wanted to Plushy finish the skating and becomes businessman in her father's business. He has a lot of hotels in Russia. It was planed to be the child's name Christian Plushenko Plushy has moved away from her in the spring of 2006! When the son was born Maria changed it he is Egor Ermak ( Maria's second name ) In the divorce procedure took a lot of money from Plush they devorced in 2008. For a long time he didn't see his son, but since then the situation has returned to normal, Egor was there with Plushy when he ran in the torch changer. Maria supported him before Sochi in her vkontakte account( the Russian Facebook)

The branch of equestrian sports that really allows older competitors is dressage. In that and in marksmanship, there could be some pretty long careers.

As far as parents and children competing in the same event, not that this was in the Olympics, but I think that hockey player Gordie Howe played professionally with one or two of his sons for a brief time.

When it comes to gymnastics, though, I share your reluctance to get interested, especially in ladies' gymnastics. Their careers last about as long as a tulip that has been picked and put into a vase. I can't even learn their names quickly enough. Fortunately in ice skating, though many have rapid careers, there are a few who manage to endure and to grow artistically and technically, and they're the ones that hold my interest. I feel fortunate that skaters I have especially liked, such as Michelle, Mao, YuNa, and Daisuke, have stayed in for a pretty long time. And I am also lucky enough to like ice dancing, where skaters seem to have longer careers.

right. he is Sasha http://instagram.com/gnomgnomych?modal=true

and read my # 27 post :) Sasha is really adorable. Actually Plu has four sons. He lives with 3 boys. Yana's two sons already admire Plushy so much. One of the boys was a little bit fat some years ago but not today. He is already a footbal player and he lost many weight. He started to the sport because of Plu. And Plushy wants two princesses. :)

I wonder, would muscle suit be allowed in ice dance? Obviously, he can't do the stripping part since that's prop violation, but he won't need to jump, so the suit won't hinder him much.

But he has another son with Yana, right?
Yes, but Sasha won't be ready for 2022. ;) He's barely a toddler--even in eight years, he won't be old enough to compete at the Olympics. Plushy did make a joke about it though.
