Tokyo Regionals/Sectionals/Nationals dates:

Tokyo Regionals—Sept 20-23, Tokyo
East Japan—Oct 24-27, Nagano
All Japan—Dec 19-22, Tokyo

Based on the above schedule, if Marin gets either CS Nepela or Nebelhorn, it will cover the regional competition for her. But for the east sectional...COC might be too late and it's safer if she'll get SkAM or SC.

- Takeshi Honda will stand in as Marin's coach while she is in Japan. Raf will still be her main coach.

According to Raf Marin will return to US next week (I heard this info in the ice time podcast) he said he undestands the dilema Marin is facing of leaving Japan for so long when the culture in US and Japan are so different, and that's kinda why this season Marin will be half of the time in US and half in Japan, he also said that communicate with her is difficult because the language barrier. The first thing that he wants to know when Marin arrives is in what shape she is. The thing that I like about the interview is that he did not say this things in a way that sound like he wanted to blame Marin or exposed her, he talked of her in a sincere way and in my opinion supporting way. After watching the two videos of Marin and The Ice I'm quite optimistic reggarding Marin situation, she improved her spins and her Ina Bauer now is so beautiful, the only thing that catch my eye was her triple salchow it used to be her best jump but know it seems like she's afraid of it, I wonder why. I love her edges, her expresion, and that's the main reason why I want her to be consistent with her tech content so she can have more opportunities to perfom and compete. I'm crossing my fingers with hope that she can get a second spot in case someone withdraw, but if that does not happen then I want her to focus in the one that she has.

I really like Marin, but it does boggle the mind that she spent almost a full year in the US and still can't communicate? I realize not everyone is a linguist, but at the point, she should be able to talk to her coach and at least express herself in basic terms. Don't they offer some kind of language assistance to skaters from other countries? There are so many apps and language programs out there--my grandparents picked up English by watching TV... yeesh!

I get your argument and agree with it after all the name of the jumps, spins etc sound the same either in english or japanesse but on the other side of the coin the truth is that english is not the first language of Raf and for me (I also picked up English by watching TV) is harder to understand what he's saying than another person that was born in the US.
When Marin was with Mie Hamada she was her translator at times like when she was learning Choreo or with a spins specialist, I think that it must be difficult to find a person that works on translation specifically knows japanese and english and also wants or knows to skate.
Anyway she has to improve her communication skills after all she's losing information that its part of the deal.

Raf said in an interview that it was easier communicating with Eunsoo than it was with Marin. One of the things he talked about is that sometimes he would tell Marin to do something and asked if she understood and she said yes but not do what Raf has asked. So he would be frustrated because he didn’t know if she really didn’t understand and why didn’t she say so because he could try to explain it another way. Or if she just didn’t like what he wanted and deliberately did it another way lol.

It sounded like it took her longer to process things and she was afraid to speak up because it’s a different coach and language. IMO she should be committing at least another full year to Raf, but it’s possible she may end up spending more time in Irvine. After all, the facility is designed to give elite skaters more ice time that she wouldn’t necessarily get in Japan

I worked in Japan for two years and yeah, the general (not just linguistic) communication skills were often problematic. There is a preoccupation with "losing face" and appearing stupid, when in fact not asking questions and getting the right info is what makes people look silly... Sigh.

Marin should use that highly publicized translator that consists of a dedicated device, smaller than a phone.

Ugh. So, it seems this huge language barrier exists for real on both sides... :palmf:
Please, someone tell Raf, that he misunderstood why Marin has to spend half of the season in Japan so he won't repeat a similar mistake he had with Mao before. It's not because of the culture nor language barrier as he assumed or misheard, but because she couldn't do well enough last season and she has to participate in local competitions in Japan to grab whatever chances left available for her, which forces her to spend more time in Japan. (Those who are sent to international competitions don't have to participate in local ones but get seeded instead. She doesn't have that luxury this season, and she only has one GP in China and one CS in Nebelhorn as of now. GP in China would be a lot easier for her to be in Japan for better conditioning too because of the time zone. If she fails at local competitions and Nats after that this season, she will again have to spend more time in Japan for any opportunities. And we all know that Raf would not come to Japan for coaching.)

Yes, she did mention that it would be easy for her to work with Takeshi Honda because they share the language, but that's not the reason, it's just an extra bonus, but people seem to pay more attention to that part for some reason. According to her interviews here, she felt she needed someone watching her close and give her advice so as not to mess up with what she has learned from Raf and his team in the US. She said, she always tried to keep up with what she learned, but every time she returned Japan and trained alone for a while, she unwillingly lost what she learned and had to redo and relearn the same thing over and over when she went back to the states. She asked Honda to help her to not go back to her old habits with jumps. She's trying to keep Raf's teaching while in Japan. Maybe she's using her situation as an excuse and perhaps what Raf said may be true, but still, this is the official reason of her half the season in Japan and they should at least talk enough through an interpreter or someone knowledgeable to agree for official statements.:(

I’m so glad that she’s keeping this program and I love her energy, attack, and joy in this video. I hope she shows us that she will fight this season because I love her

Marin can earn high program component scores with that. I think she raised the level of her jumps just too high in the previous two seasons to compete with big jumpers like Mai Mihara and Kaori Sakamoto. Nailing all jumps should be a priority in the short program.
