This is going to be a tough event for non-Russians. Russia is sending the very best skaters it has, probably partly because junior worlds will be in Tallinn next year. Will be fun to watch!

As much as it stinks for the US to only get to send one Ladies' skater per event, props to Canada for using all the spots it rightfully earned and giving a bunch of skaters the chance to compete internationally!

Really only 1?? I thought it would be 2 in a couple of JGPs, 1 for the rest. There were also some countries like Korea which did well at junior worlds and I thought they wouldn't have enough skaters for their JGP spots, and this way for example the US would get one of those. But apparently there are enough Korean juniors. And also Kazakhstan!?

By virtue of Junior Worlds placements, RUS/JPN/CAN get 2 per event, KOR/USA/KAZ get 1 per event (Turzynbaeva of KAZ finished 11th, but everyone above her was from the other 5 countries). RUS and JPN obviously have plenty of skaters for their spots, CAN is (rightfully) using its' spots. KOR might not have enough for 2 per event but definitely has enough for 1 per event.

Technically, KOR/USA/KAZ (in that order) could earn extra spots if any of the "1 skater in 6 events" teams (GER/FIN/FRA/UKR) don't use their spots, but I wouldn't think that'd be likely (and KOR gets first go at the spots anyway, so the US has an even less likelihood.)

It stinks because the US ladies usually do well enough to earn max allowable spots, but had an off year (were in the 2-spots-per range after the SP, but trouble in the FS caused them to slip out of range.

I sort of think it's a blessing in disguise (and the launch of the isu challenger series). It's forced some of the ladies to move up. If we had more spots I wouldn't have been surprised of Mariah Bell or Hannah Miller stayed junior internationally one more year.

Thank you for your explanation! I had misunderstood how the system works.

I agree with this. It gladdens me that we're sending more skaters to Senior Bs, and giving 'true juniors' a shot at the JGP.
