Updated the scores.
Congrats to Machida for making the finals. When I saw the protocols this morning I thought he must have done horribly, but he really didn't. The long program was still skated with passion and energy. Good for you Machida.

Haruka has not improved from Skate America unfortunately and is at the bottom of the standings for the LP.

I'm horrible at compiling stats, but a dear friend of mine who also loves figure skating compiled this list for me.

NHK starting tomorrow.
For the Singles skaters, Hanyu and Mura can make the GPF with a podium finish.
Satoko and Kanako can make the Final with a 1-2 finish.

Other competing singles skaters from Japan are Murakami Daisuke and Kato Riona

Good luck everyone. :cheer:

Murakami was fantastic. Except...was she lip synching during the riff part of that song? very distracting.

I don't know what she did but her spins look a lot better than they have been.

Ok, my number crunching friend has made a new list.

Full graph is the link below that lists their TES, SP and FP scores. Good Work!

Season's best scores for Men and Women in Team Japan

Men's Total Scores

Yuzuru Hanyu 288.16
Tatsuki Machida 269.09
Takahito Mura 255.81
---------------------
Daisuke Murakami 246.07
Shoma Uno 238.27
Takahiko Kozuka 216.80
Sota Yamamoto 213.12
Sei Kawahara 189.50
Keiji Tanaka 189.26

Women's Total Scores

Satoko Miyahara 189.90
Wakaba Higuchi 178.09
Rika Hongo 178.00
-----------------------------
Kanako Murakami 173.09
Yuka Nagai 172.34
Riona Kato 168.38
Miyu Nakashio 160.64
Rin Nitaya 158.76
Haruka Imai 157.967

In Summary, Shoma is really going to have a fight on his hands to get onto the podium at nationals but it is within his reach if Mura and Murakami have a bad day and Shoma continues to be consistent. He may be held down by the judges in his PCS during nationals as he is a junior.

I was shocked that Wakaba is currently in 2nd place in the total scores for the ladies. Very impressive. She actually has more chance of a podium placement than Shoma. The ladies are all quite close in scores so I have no idea who will be on the podium. Wow.

I think given the GPF, it's obvious that anyone can have a bad day -- see Machida. And even Hanyu is prone to bad skates as we've seen this season. And Murakami was brilliant at NHK, but it's uncertain if he can replicate it. FYI, Shoma's JGPF score beat both Mura and Machida's GPF scores, so he could medal with some luck. Anything can happen at Japanese Nats, although usually the guys are on their game, so I don't expect Shoma to be on the podium, although he should certainly make the top 5 if he skates like at JGPF.

Seeing Kanako so low made me sad, I think this will be her only year to be champion and yet :(.

And Takahiko Kosuka... I really yhink that him lossing the spot in Olympics has affected his confidence :(.

Best wishes to all the skaters. Japan is the country where the competition is harder.

Can anyone confirm that Machida was just having a bad day and not sick or injured? It looked like a complete and total meltdown as opposed to a bad skate or an off-day...

I was wondering about that too. Sometimes skaters just have very bad days. Indeed it was quite the meltdown. I don't know if it was injury because he seemed fine the day before, but who knows.

if anyone wants some detailed information on Machida's condition at GPF, please check his fanfest thread. It was not a complete meltdown - he wanted to withdraw from GPF, actually, as he is set to graduate from university soon and his dissertation is due next month.

True. But what about his SP at CoC?

Even before CoC, I dont think anyone would call Hanyu a consistent skater. He tends to falter in the free. As much as I like his skating, I have to admit that I always expect at least 1 fall from him per competition. If he ever skates a clean competition that's the day I am gonna go out and buy a lotto ticket

All the guys on Team Japan are inconsistent...in that they have pretty bad days sometimes. -Even Shoma had a pretty bad day at Jr. Nats. he got the title anyway because even on his bad days he's miles ahead of the other boys.

That's what it comes down to, I think. For example, if Mura has a bad day and doesn't make his jumps, he has very little reputation and his skating skills, spins, choreography and the in-betweens are quite basic. There is nothing to hold his scores up.

If Hanyu has a bad day, there are things the judges can still score him highly on if they are so inclined--which they usually are.

I think Shoma will be the same in a few years. His basics are good, he skates with maturity his spins are much better than Daisuke's were...so he's got the potential to be a Judge favorite. (I don't mean he will be over scored, I mean he will make the judges take notice of his elements).

Machida has been prone to meltdowns on important competitions...that's what frustrates me about him. Hanyu can usually rise to the occasion when something big is on the line.
He's got an excellent record of getting the job done during nationals, GPF, Worlds, Olympics etc. Machida brought it all together at Worlds and if he does it a few more times maybe the judges will lean towards keeping his PCS high even when he bombs the jumps.

In the Ladies, Wakaba is someone I really enjoy watching. --As is Satoko. Even if Wakaba is on the podium though, she is too young to go to Sr. Worlds. I hope Kanako can have a decent showing here so that she can make it on to the world team. Could the podium be Satoko - Rika - Wakaba?

True. But what about his SP at CoC?

His SP at his first GP comp last season wasn't good either, and this time he didnt even have Finlandia. After that his SP was always above 90( and clean until worlds). also there's his bad in one program better in the other pattern. who knows what could've happened. He might've bombed anyway who knows.

If anybody can find that graph which shows the pattern of Yuzu competition through out a few seasons. Which showed he started not so good and peak later in the season.

I believed Yuzu was not ready at COC. The fact is Brian in an interview said that Yuzu this season is behind in training. After Olympic and Worlds he had ice shows, attended various awards ceremonies, procession in sendai, shoots 4 commercials and I'm not even sure when he has time to study for his course at Waseda University. Then that back injury just before Filandia.

Sometime I wish he is from another country so that he doesn't have to do those ice shows and can take a rest :slink:

This 50 Minute video is a prelude to the Japan Nationals and features the up-coming Juniors, Seniors and also those who are having their last try at nationals. It made me well up with tears. Each of these skaters has given everything they have to come to Japan nationals and have endured a lot of pain and difficulties. I hope they ALL do well.
