Skate Canada will be livestreaming Challenge on its Daily Motion page:
http://www.dailymotion.com/skatecanada

At Nationals, there are 18 spots in singles, 15 spots in dance, and 12 spots in pairs.

In Sr Ladies: Osmond, Daleman, Chartrand, Mallet, and Seguin have byes to Nationals (5 spots)
So 13 spots will be determined at Challenge (or 14 spots if Osmond is unable to compete).

In Sr Men: Reynolds, Nguyen, Firus, Balde, Ten, Rogozine, and Sadovsky have byes to Nationals (7 spots)
So 11 spots will be determined at Challenge.

In Sr Dance: Weaver/Poje, Paul/Islam, Gilles/Poirier, Paradis/Ouellette, Orford/Williams, Edwards/Pang, and Bent/MacKeen have byes to Nationals (7 spots)
So 8 spots will be determined at Challenge.

In Sr Pairs, there are only 7 pairs, so no one will be eliminated.

In Novice and Juniors, no skaters have byes, so all the spots will be determined at Challenge.

I'm so happy to hear that Skate Canada is live streaming the entire event for free this year.

Will be interesting to see how Lubov/Dylan do against Kirsten/Michael!

Interesting that none of the top Canadian ladies have decided to compete. Last year, Kaetlyn Osmond, Gabi Daleman, Alaine Chartrand, Veronk Mallet, and Julianne Seguin all competed, and they had all been in the top six at the previous Nationals. (Kaetlyn, Gabi, and Alaine had been the Nationals medalists).

Last year

Last year it made sense for all of them to compete for various reasons.

Last season Seguin did not have a bye to nationals as she did not finish top 3 the year before and she failed to make the JPGF in ladies that year.

Daleman and Chartrand were skating junior internationally so it made sense to compete their senior programs.

It was the first competition for Osmond who was injured at the beginning of the season as well.

Mallet only had one GP assignment ( Skate Canada ) so although she had a bye last season, it made sense

This year

The best thing for Seguin is that she got Skate Canada this year. Otherwise she would have to show up to the ladies event if she did not get that assignment. Not being required to show up at challenge will help her preparation for her pairs JGPF ( which is where her focus should be right now ). BTW she could not use her pairs bye ( JGPF ) to get a ladies bye. Skate Canada assignment is the only thing that gave her a ladies bye

Osmond is not ready yet to debut her programs yet after injury.

With 2 GPs and a senior B each Chartrand , Daleman and Mallet have done enough competitions and travel to be ready for nationals.

Interesting results for the JR women. Have to wonder how those in control choose the entries for the JGP events. You would think those who were selected for 2 JGPs would be leading the pack here but some of them are in fact quite far down in the standings.

The selections made sense based on summer competitions. The sad thing is that for JW we are restricted to choosing only among skaters that have had at least one JGP and made the ISU minimum score. We can't choose the one that skated awful in the summer but is in much better form now.

Let's wait until the senior ladies skate. Dunley ( who skated well in her JGP last year but did not get one this year ) just might get JW if she skates well here and at nationals. Her summer was not so good this year though.

JGP assignments aren't based on performance at challenge, and you ca't assume that all Junior skaters are in the same periodization phase right now - For some skaters, making it to Nationals is the goal of their season so they are trying very very hard here to qualify. For those who had JGP assignments, they peaked many weeks ago, have backed off their training load somewhat and now at the early stages of ramping back up to peak at Nationals in a month. The latter will just do what they need to do at Challenge to make top-18 to qualify, and take the podium in early Jan.

Good points hjay

All the JGP bound ladies in juniors made nationals. And junior challenge results do not affect skate order at nationals.

The JGP ladies competing senior this year might put a little more effort as the challenge results are used to determine skate order at nationals ( with the byed skaters skating after top skaters at challenge ).

Doris- Do you think Paradis & Ouellette have a chance at placing 3rd at Nationals and going to worlds? They seem to be moving up while Paul/Islam seem to be dropping back a bit!

I definitely think Paradis & Ouellette have a chance. They have made some huge strides this season.
Paul/Islam however always seem to have the benefit of the doubt from the Canadian judges. I'm still a little bitter that Gillies/Poirier didn't go to Sochi!

They sure seemed to have gone home and trained their SD which was their weaker program at both grand prix events.

I agree MeaganSkater. Althought Paul/Islams's total scores in the GP was higher you have to consider these factors

Paradis & Ouellette got the first 2 GPs when the programs are rawer and you expect the scores to be lower for everybody.

Paul/Islam had the benefit of later GPs and not being newbies.
