You also have to consider that given their 10th place finish at worlds last year Paul/Islam should have been going for medals in their events. And they fell way short of that. P/O had no expectations yet they came out strong right off the bat at their 1st event and finished 4th.

Doris- Do you think Paradis & Ouellette have a chance at placing 3rd at Nationals and going to worlds? They seem to be moving up while Paul/Islam seem to be dropping back a bit!

Maybe. Paradis & Ouellette are very lyrical skaters, but they do not appear to have the speed of Paul & Islam. Plus I think the tech panel went a little easy on their Paso here. They gave it level 3 for one sequence and level 4 for the other, and it didn't look that perfect to me. Also I would have had level 3 on the not touching step, not level 4.

Paul & Islam are mistake prone, though, and Paradis & Ouellette are close enough that Paul & Islam can't make a lot of mistakes.

Skate Canada will be livestreaming Challenge on its Daily Motion page:
http://www.dailymotion.com/skatecanada

At Nationals, there are 18 spots in singles, 15 spots in dance, and 12 spots in pairs.

In Sr Ladies: Osmond, Daleman, Chartrand, Mallet, and Seguin have byes to Nationals (5 spots)
So 13 spots will be determined at Challenge (or 14 spots if Osmond is unable to compete).

In Sr Men: Reynolds, Nguyen, Firus, Balde, Ten, Rogozine, and Sadovsky have byes to Nationals (7 spots)
So 11 spots will be determined at Challenge.

In Sr Dance: Weaver/Poje, Paul/Islam, Gilles/Poirier, Paradis/Ouellette, Orford/Williams, Edwards/Pang, and Bent/MacKeen have byes to Nationals (7 spots)
So 8 spots will be determined at Challenge.

In Sr Pairs, there are only 7 pairs, so no one will be eliminated.

In Novice and Juniors, no skaters have byes, so all the spots will be determined at Challenge.

In junior Pairs, I think Seguin & Bilodeau have a bye, due to the JGPF? Or are they skating as Seniors at Nationals?

In junior dance, there were only 12 teams who completed the event for the 15 spots, so they all qualify.

In senior dance, the eight teams added to make up the field of 15, with the 7 byes are (if I have this right):
2 Carolane Soucisse / Simon Tanguay 54.76 89.78 144.54 QC
3 Mariève Cyr / Benjamin Brisebois-Gaudreau 54.14 82.76 136.90 QC
4 Mélissande Dumas / Simon Proulx -Senecal 52.98 79.98 132.96 QC
5 Victoria Hasegawa / Connor Hasegawa 54.74 77.84 132.58 WO
6 Catherine Daigle-Roy / Dominic Barthe 44.72 82.38 127.10 QC
7 Andréanne Poulin / Marc-André Servant 48.42 71.22 119.64 QC
8 Alexa Linden / Jean Luc Jackson 42.82 68.74 111.56 BC/YK
9 Jade Robitaille / Philippe Granger 41.32 64.38 105.70 QC

i.e., one team, Howe/Shindle, was eliminated here.

Where did Paradis/Ouellette even come from? When you look at their skating record how did they end up with 2 GP assignments this season. I mean it is great for them and they seem to be coming into their own as a SR team but still it seems odd that we are seeing them out there so much this season. And now they have a shot at going to worlds if they keep on improving this way.

They are skating senior this year.

Pairs is so interesting because all we know about skate order is that Duhamel/Radford will skate last in the SP and and Jones/Reagan will skate 2nd last. None of the other byed pairs skated seniors last year so they will all be drawn randomly to skate before the two couples mentioned.

Paradis/Ouellette are 22. They were not together when they were juniors so they never did the JGP. Last year they did a Cup of Nice and placed well, then placed well at Canadians so Skate Canada decided to make them a host pick at Skate Canada. They were chosen as last minute substitutes for Skate America - I assume because they were close. The rest is history, as they say.

In junior dance, as well as the 12 teams that completed the event, there were 2 teams who withdrew (Chartrand/Dyck and Croteau-Villeneuve/Hough). Since there were fewer than 15 teams registered for Challenge, I believe they all automatically advance to Nationals and none of them actually had to compete at Challenge. So the 2 teams who withdrew should also advance to Nationals.

I tuned in in time to see Dylan & Lubov slo-mo replay + kiss'n'cry looking happy, and saw Kirsten & Michael skate clean. Don't know the scores, the feed broke.

That was extremely awkward to watch as both teams (LI/DM & KMT/MM) warmed up separately in the first group. Lubov looked very pleased in the K&C.

Senior Men Short currently underway with Nam Ngyugen scheduled to compete.

I was also surprised to see that Keegan Messing has decided to compete for Canada this season and represents the AB/NT/NU section.
