Biggest surprises:
I haven't seen any of these shows, but I am always interested in Broadway and what's going on there. So everything I say is just based on word-of-mouth that I heard...take it with a grain of salt.

Boy From Oz nominated for Best New Musical? The only good reviews the show got was for Hugh. Most people think it's a turkey with a great performance from Jackman. I thought Bombay Dreams or Taboo would sneak in there and get the 4th slot even if they don't have that much support.

Wicked not nominated for Best Director? I think since Joe
Mantello directed both Wicked and Assassins, Tony voters wanted to make sure he got a nod, so they put all their support in for Assassins.

Little Shop of Horrors being snubbed in a big way. I'm not really that surprised it wasn't nominated that much, but I thought it would get a nod for Best Revival.

You just have to look at the left of my screen name to see who I support. ;)

Thanks a lot for this information. I haven't seen any of these new productions, although I have seen a couple of the revivals when they toured nationally. I am always interested in the Tonys because I know that most of the nominated musicals/plays will go on a national tour within a year or two, and I will get to see it here in Detroit. We just got "The Producers", which I did not like, and "The Lion King", which was fantastic. Next year we get "Thouroughly Modern Millie", which I can not wait for, and "Hairspray", among others. I really would like to see "Wicked". I know that Michael Crawford was in it when it first opened, but I don't know if he still is.

If you're anywhere within driving, train, or bus distance of NY and can get (afford) tix to "The Boy from Oz," do, because it will win Best Musical, mark my words. I hate musicals and I LOVED this. Granted, it's mostly due to Hugh Jackman (he's only doing the show in NY until August, BTW), but who cares. Jackman is spectacular. With "Van Helsing" out (who cares if it's good or bad) and "Oz" nominated, I'm just glad I saw it a couple of months ago before word of mouth got too far around and discount tix were still available.

Thanks for the info VGT.:)

I've seen The Producers on Broadway, but not with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. The Lion King doesn't think need stars like those two to be enjoyed. Even in NYC, when those two came back for their limited run, tickets sold out immediately, while without them, it wasn't the same show.

I saw Avenue Q while on vacation this winter... as a product of sesame street I got a kick out of that satire.

I would recommend it. I heard many of the songs, and I love them. Kristin Chenoweth who plays Glinda, is leaving in July, so I say you should see it before she leaves.

Yay for Wicked and Assassins...they seem to be sharing the musical awards evenly among themselves. Joe Mantello, the director of both, must be thrilled.

The Wicked girls cancelled each other out again, with Donna Murphy, the favorite winning. I think come Tony night, it's going to be between Donna Murphy and Tonya Pitkins from "Caroline, Or Change." Donna is the favorite and Tonya has staunch supporters (especailly from the 'high brow' members).

Hugh Jackman is going to win the Tony...no doubt about it.

I'm disappointed that "Avenue Q" didn't win any awards...I thought they were going to win Best Lyrics...(with songs like "The Internet is for Porn" "Everyone's a Little bit Racist" "
If you Were Gay" "What do I do with a B.A. in English?" how can it not win?)

However, Go Wicked!!!
