    Miyabi Oba

Japanese figure skater Miyabi Oba (大庭 雅 Oba Miyabi) was born August 8, 1995, in Tokoname, Aichi, Japan.

I first saw Miyabi at the 2014 Rostelecom Cup, and her free skate was one of my favorites of the event. Add that to her huge jumps (I really think she has potential to land a 3A-her 2A is HUGE), and I became a fan! I really think she has something special and I hope she can break out internationally next season!

^ Thank you for starting a fan discussion for Miyabi. She's one of the Jpn skaters I've been watched out for, esp. during the Jpn Nationals.

Actually, for the 2013 Jpn Nationals FS posted above, Miyabi attempted 3A as the very first jump, although with a fall and marked as < (protocol here, and she was 13th in FS: http://www.jsfresults.com/National/2...s/data0205.pdf)

Some other trivia I can remember about Miyabi:
    - She trains with Yuko Monna, who has coached Miki and Mao (when they are young)
    - I think it was around last summer, she had an accident falling (from practicing jumping?) and seemed to have hit her head. There was a short period of time that she couldn't do any jump.
    - I remember reading somewhere (but can't recall the source) that prior to the COR last year, she worked with Miki to refine her skating.

She was working on her 3A and it was looking good, but then she had that training accident and it seemed to shake her confidence in jumping.
I hope she recovers fully in her mind about it so that she can do the 3A again. So many young skaters to cheer for.
    Go Miyabi!

If I remember correctly, she was a gymnast from an early age - hence her relatively "late" start in figure skating, at 10 years old.

Yes, it was under-rotated and she fell - but she wasn't far off making the full rotation...

Yes - IIRC she hit her head so hard, she had to be carried off the rink. After that she lost her jumps - not because of physically injury, but because the accident was so traumatic it left her terrified of the ice. It was a real struggle for her to overcome that fear and compete again, and she was a very emotional when she did - she left the ice crying (IIRC it was a regional competition, pretty sure she was on the podium and possibly the winner)

She's a brave girl! But still, I'm not sure she has fully recovered mentally yet - her skating still seems a little cautious. Which is a shame because I think she has a lot of potential. I hope we see her returning to form and making new progress this season.

TV fluff piece about Miyabi before her FS at a local competition where she came in 1st in FS, and 2nd overall.

You can see Miyabi as a gymnast and her 3A attempt during the 6 minute warm-up before 2013 Nationals.
I hope she can still go for the 3A. It'll be exciting to see it executed when she's not on anyone's radar!
