Roberta Rodeghiero

Roberta Rodeghiero is an Italian figure skater. She was born on 7 April 1990 in Schio, Italy.

She is the 2015 Trophee Eric Bompard bronze medalist, the 2014 CS Ondrej Nepela Trophy champion, the 2015 Lombardia Trophy champion, the 2012 Crystal Skate of Romania champion, the 2012 Egna Spring Trophy champion, and a three-time Italian national silver medalist (2015-2017). She has also competed in the final segment at six ISU Championships.

Thanks for starting this! I had no idea she could even do that, LOL. Her 3T-3T was, dare I say, better than about 80% of the 3-3s in this competition and that is saying a LOT. You go, Roberta! :hap57:

Roberta was looking a bit tense yesterday, quite understandable because she must have had an exhausting week. But the SP was good, she was behind the music at the end of the program, it looked like she missed the axel because of it. So 60+ points in the SP are definitly possible for her. :agree:
I wish her luck for today, keeping the 7th place would be a very good result for her in that tight field.

Her program yesterday wan't clean, she wasn't really satisfied with her performance afterwards, but I thought there were some very nice moments in it (she really is a very solid jumper) and she finished 7th!

Italy's Roberta Rodeghiero, who skated to a third-place finish in the short program of the Trophée Eric Bompard in November, delivered a clean program, including a triple toe-triple toe combination and a triple flip, and she heads to the free skate in fourth place.

"I'm really happy," she said as she left the ice. "My goal coming here was to reach 60 points in the short program, which I had never done. I scored 61.01 points, which is even better.

Now I've worked on most elements I needed to work on, so I feel much better skating it. The more you like a program, the better you'll skate it. I really love my program and the music, the choreography, so I think it shows!"

Has anyone heard of this girl? She's an Italian skater....just found her out on youtube watching her sp and lp programs at Europeans. I really enjoyed her skating. If only she was a stronger jumper, she'd be a strong contender, imo I thought I would share her videos because her interpretation of music is so lovely, I found myself watching her programs over and over again. She is a very mature skater. Just found out she ended up in 5th place overall at Europeans. She definitely would have medaled if she was a stronger jumper.

I think she is a strong jumper, she only needs improve her skills and lines... so glad to see another good italian skatersince Caro

Roberta has been around for donkey's years. But for most of her career she was in the third tier of Italian Ladies skating (Carolina Kostner and Valentina Marchei being the first tier, and Francesca Rio being the second tier). And because the gaps between the tiers were so big, we never got to see Roberta or any of the other third tier skaters.

But then Franesca retired, Valentina switched to Pairs, and Carolina took a sabbatical. So, everybody had to step up to claim the international slots.

Because she was the oldest and most experienced of the skaters left, everybody expected Roberta to clean up at Italian Nationals last year. But she didn't. She actually bombed, and the title was won by this relatively unknown skater that had just come up from Juniors, called Giada Russo.

So, in the wake of this, Roberta really stepped up her game in her international assignments. The improvement in her skating was massive, and was obvious to see. She became a regular on the podium in Senior B's, and then started winning them. And she started troubling the top skaters at the big events as well.

In the past calendar year, Roberta Rodeghiero has became the dominant Italian Ladies skater on the international scene. So, when Nationals came around again, we were sure she would clean up, to prove a point that what happened a year earlier was just a one-off. She didn't. She bombed again, and Russo won again.

Over the past year, everybody has been raving about Rodegheiro. But, because I know her history, I am not convinced that she is the next big thing to come out of Italy. It has taken her so long to get herself noticed, and she is now in her mid-20's. So, her age will put a limit on how long she is able to compete with the best.

Also, there are up and coming young skaters. Russo may have announced herself on the Italian scene with that surprise win at Nationals last year, but she didn't on the international scene. Her international results were very poor compared to Rodegheiro's, and she had absolutely no reputation. But then she announced herself big time at Europeans last week. And, like Roberta a year earlier, the improvement was obvious to see.

So, given her new found reputation, I would expect Russo to start challenging Rodegheiro for the title of top Italian on the international scene over the next year or so.

But then there is the return of Carolina Kostner. And if she picks up where she left off, Rodegheiro and Russo will both be in trouble.

Also, looking a few years further down the line, and Alessia Tornaghi will be the name everybody is talking about. Currently 12 years old, she got special dispensation to compete in the Italian Junior Championship because she was the reigning Novice Champion. She went out and won the SP, and came within a whisker of winning the Junior title at her first attempt.

Tornaghi is a really beautiful skater, and she has the jumps. And because she has Russian ancestry, she has managed to bag herself a Russian coaching team. Specifically, Liza Tuktamysheva's original coach. So, I am expecting big things from her.

So, whilst Roberta is currently the one grabbing the headlines, her reign as undisputed top Italian skater may turn out to be short.

If only she had stepped up her game a few years earlier...

There are times for everything in life, maybe she had different priorities when she was younger, or she thought that she wouldn't have a chance against Marchei anyway? That comment was directed towards topaz emerald, who started a thread asking about Roberta. But, in the time it took me to write that comment, it was merged into your thread.

I do agree with you that what she has done this past year or so is remarkable. And admirable. But, it has come too late.

If Roberta wanted to have a long-ish reign as the top Italian skater, she really needed to be challenging Rio, and maybe even Marchei, when they were still around. That way, when they disappeared, the younger skaters would not have been able to catch her.

Truthfully, given the way Marchei stepped it up in the final few years of her singles career, I don't think Rodegheiro would have caught her. But, catching Rio was a possibility.

But, the mistake Roberta made was that she thought she would a clear run when the Top 3 disappeared. She didn't realise that she needed to actually step it up until Russo beat her at Nationals.

And now, Russo has stepped it up as well.

I don't know much about Roberta outside of skating, so I don't know what else was going on in her life at the time. But I do feel that the door was open for her to become the undisputed top Italian Ladies skater, but she didn't realise it was open until it was too late.

Which is a shame, because it is always nice to see older skaters blossoming.

I see, I did wonder why Roberta's fan thread was in the "The Edge" a couple of hours ago.
It's true that Roberta didn't do well at Nationals, but she did do very well at Europeans and that's where it counted. Because although I think Giada is a exceptionally talented and gifted figure skater, she doesn't seem to be a talented jumper. As long as Giada isn't able to rotate all her jumps she is no real competition for Roberta. And when Carolina comes back in form Roberta will be Italy's no. 2. Because after Europeans I think it's safe to say that Roberta is Italy's no. 1 at the moment and that she will be send to Worlds. So I believe that Roberta could have a couple of good years ahead of her.
And we don't know what Roberta wants to achieve in her figure skating career anyway, what her goals are. She probably wants to go to the next Olympics and that's definitely within her reach.

Wow, thanks for telling us some of her skating history. Yes, it's really unfortunate about her age being 25 years old, that's Mao's age. I just think it's nice to see others from other countries other than Russia or Japan receiving good results, it's like a breath of fresh air. Quite frankly, I'm American, but I do not enjoy watching any our of American girls perform, it's either you can reach the audience with your performance or you can't. For example, I really enjoyed Ashley Wagner's moulin program the first time she performed it, but when I saw her do it a second time, I don't know why I cringed....it was like, is that the best she got? Why do the program again? And then we have stone faced Gracie Gold and her overextended arms, and the still immature programs from Edmunds. It makes me appreciate Michelle Kwan's skating so much more because you realize at 16 years old, Michelle Kwan really reached the audience with her skating. I'll always remember her Romanza program and I think she was even younger than 16. I bring Michelle up because Roberta's skating at Europeans reminded me of her and is the kind of skating I want to see and wish of our American girls.

You are probably right, she probably only has a few more years left, but what about Costner, isn't she 27 years old? That woman can still do triple triples, her speed still incredible, and you said she may come back. I think performance points should be rewarded more highly than it is under the current judging system. Maybe that can stop these 15-16 year old jumping beans atop the podium with mediocre performances. Anyway, I think Roberta's performance at Europeans blows the top three finishers away Italy should be lucky to have her. She just needs to work on her jumps for consistency, imo.

And thanks for telling us about the up and coming Italian girls...I will check them out on youtube

She's working on a 3lz-3toe, but I don't know when it will be reliable enough. To her credit, so far she has improved slowly but steadily.

I only discovered Roberta at Euros an she was superb and poised, as expected of an Italian skater. Her story reminds me of Houry Gebeshian, a US born and bred gymnast who now competes internationally for Armenia. Gymnastics has always been a big part of her life but she was not good enough to make the US national team and competed at college instead. So it wasn't until she was 22 that she made the debut to elite gymnastics at the 2011 World Championships, representing Armenia. Since gymnastics in Armenia is pretty much nonexistent, she trains alone, competes alone, coaches herself and while working as a physical assistant to support her gymnastics dream.

In general, I think it can be incredibly hard to third-tier athlete in a powerhouse country to pursue their dreams and they have to prioritize other things while they're still young. On the other hand, old competitors in a teenage playground can have their own advantages. They have significantly matured, their confidences have improved and since their times are ticking, they are super motivated to stay on track and be the best persons they can be in all assets of their lives. I hope to see more of Roberta in the years to come and the presence of seasoned skaters like her will send a positive message to skating fans in general.

She only doubled the loop and singled the toe in the lutz combo.
