I had never heard about this guy before Russian Nationals, but I didn't watch him skate until Europeans. I liked what I saw. I agreed with Johnny about the music, I wasn't crazy about it or the choreography, to be honest, but I really liked his skating. My favourite Russian male skater at the moment, I think.

Well, I'll just jump in and say that I enjoyed both the music & choreo.:)

I adore the choreo but thats just me:yay:

And the NBC version of his LP:

Does Johnny say Mika trains 4S and 4Lo in practice?! (or did he mean 4T..?) Well if he has seen him in Russia, it might be true... I just saw Johnny commenting МОЛОДЕЦ!!! in Mika's instagram.
i like he did mention how hard it was to come after Flo!!

Mikhail came out of nowhere for me this season. I just watched his Euros programs and it's always a relief when a skater commits to the movements. I couldn't help but wonder what Rohene Ward could do with him. I'm not sure why, but I feel like they could be a good match choreographically.

I have mixed feelings about Mika's LP - I appreciate originality & quirkiness of the choreo and the way Mika moves, it reminds me somehow of Scandinavian folklore creatures, don't you think so LRK?
But tbh I find music a little annoying especially towards the end of the program so I rewatch it muted. I like the SP more. But I am surprised by Johnny & Tara' reaction I thought they would appreciate it more - is it not an American movie?

I've watched his LP in Euros and I can't deny that it's something wrong happend with it since the Russian Cup. It looks like he is a little bit outgrew it. As far as I understood they made it about 3 years ago before his injury, and I've read in his interview that few years ago he was completly like other person, sometimes angry, indiciplined, emotional, a person who couldn't decide what he wants. I've saw his programm in RusCup and it was like I saw this boy in his programm. His short is still ok, he is like "I'm crazy and funny, deal with it". He is more confident, more calm, more dedicated. But his LP's nerve is kind of lost.

I think there is something in what you say though I don't think his LP was created as long as 3 years ago - for the last season I believe. And as he hardly had opportunity to skate it due to his injury it is understandable they kept it. But yes I would like to see a different side of Mika next season

I just found Mikhail's official group was launched on VK.
https://vk.com/mikhail_kolyada
It seems like there's a thread where Mika himself will answer fans' questions :hap57:
https://vk.com/topic-24618099_33622550

I was reading through the thread using Google translate and I wonder if they're saying that calling a person 'puppy' (like some did here) is insulting in Russian? Well it's an endearment in English, so I hope no Russian will take this offensive... but it's better to know what not to use for Russian skaters.

Sharing beautiful pics from one of my followers. She says that before the warm-up, Mika was staring at the rink, concentrating. So fierce.

Yes, of course it was not 3 years, it was less than 2 years, I was wrong, but still he came throw so much since those time, he must became more mature. Maybe this boy is still hide somewhere inside of him but he just doesn't let him out, because he feels more responsible now. Anyway, it's just my speculations. And I think it is good programm, fresh and unusual. I hope his last perfomance of this programm will be in Boston and he will give his best there. Then of course will be new season, where we will see new grown-up Mikhail, and I hope his future programms still will be unique, special, like no one else can bring.

You are quite correct, calling someone a puppy in Russian is not nice, I don't know why Tarasova did that (I understand that it started with her commentary?) lets stick to a grumpy cat :)

On his VK there is some sort of a plot of a surprise for Mika's upcoming birthday (18th Feb), so if anyone here comes up with any ideas of a video or something ...

Thanks! Yeah, let's stick with grumpy cat if that sounds better  Japanese fans often call him "melon" because of his SP costume, I hope that's alright in Russian

I've just checked the website of Russian Fed and there is a list of competitors in Russian Cup Final - Mika is not there but Sergei Voronov is in. The question is if Voronov wins could they send him to Worlds instead of Mika, your thoughts?

And I read a full version of Lakernik's interview on the same website and he actually praised Mika's 3A: beautiful, spectacular, very good:

As much as I like Voronov, it doesn't make sense to me if the fed chooses Voronov over Mika since Mika beat Voronov at all of the three events where they competed head to head this season (1st stage of Cup of Russia, Rostelecom, Nationals). But I'll reserve my belief until it is officially confirmed...

ETA: I gave it a bit more thought... maybe, they'll go with Voronov if he nails all those quads at the Final?

nah its not that uncommon that a word has diff connotations in diff languages so it not the case of literal translation

puppy in english is super adorable & I'll stick to it. In russian I'd call him little bear b/c Misha means a bear:laugh:

It does look like it is still up in the air but if so by right Mika should be invited too to participate in the Final? How many quads Sergei has in the lp?

Mika didn't need to be invited since he qualified to the event through the qualifiers, so I'd like to believe that the fact he's not competing here means that his spot is secured. However quads are a must have in the World this year, even Denis, Patrick and Adam are upping their game. Seryoja has a quad in SP and two in LP. Well, let's see how the competition goes, I'm also curious to know what's gonna happen to ladies if Julia puts together two clean performances.

Yeah we have to be patient for a bit longer. Regarding the list of participants in RCF I would not be surprised if the names are added just a few days prior. So we'll see. I just think it is a bit unfair on the skaters, Mika & Anna in this case, to live in uncertainty for that long.

Long interview with Chebotareva. I just love reading her interview even though I don't fully understand it, she seems to be such a contemplative woman.

It touches me the fact that she answers "I think the Olympic gold. As I." when asked "what he wants to achieve in the sport itself, Mikhail?". In the oldest interview of Mika I could find, from 2011, he said his dream was to become an Olympic champion, but when he was asked what his dream was in the interview after the Rostelecom this season, he says he doesn't have such a dream but he focuses on what he has to achieve on daily basis. I admire how these two are always calm without, but are burning fire within themselves. (I feel like I said similar things somewhere before...?)

What I see from the last words is that they (coach and Mikhail) are going to get used to the top interntional competitions and then up their game. He has quad Sal, they do not include it into competitive programs yet but they might, let's see if that would be next season. Also she said that Mikhail has a great technique on this thriple Lutz and she thinks there would not be a huge problem to start and learn quad Lutz, so his potential BV may be really good in couple of seasons.
I too like his style and the fact that he brings a lot of personality on the ice, the one that differs from the other Russian athletes. And that is great- to be unique and noticeable. I wish him a lot of good luck at Boston Worlds, hopefully he can show a great result in there. Definitely going to follow his career.

Thanks so much for the link! And the info on Hellmut Memorial. Maybe they are going to try 4S there? I just was thinking another day that if Mika not going to Russian Cup Final he needs some B competition before Boston.

Back to the interview, I like this lady so much, this tandem Mika & Valentina really deserve good things after all they'd been through. Fingers crossed...
A few practical details emerged in the interview which are encouraging such as some new specialists who have started working with Chebotareva's group- a SS guy and off-ice coach. And the way Chebotareva said that now she is in a position to ask for more [from the Fed] implies that more help is on the way, hopefully.
I wish Chebotareva was slightly less open & sincere in this interview as haters are already beginning to emerge (a real sign that Mika has arrived!) and every word she said is of course being twisted e.g about 4Lz and Olympic gold dream etc. But she will learn the rules of the game in time no doubt. She will have to be different to survive in a reptilia zoo as Russian figure skating was often called. Until then it is a pleasure to read such genuine heartfelt interview.

I see that Stanislava Konstantinova won the Cup of St Petersburg today. Am I wrong or she is a student of Chebotareva too?
