Frank is not as smart of a coach as i thought he was if it was his idea for Gracie to go for the flip in the SP. You would think after going 1 for 3 with the flip in the SP this season he would make changes. :palmf:

That decision doesn't seem to be Frank's idea, because he isn't a type of coach to push his skaters to follow what he're saying.

I had a skating dream last night--Courtney won the short because of mistakes by the others :palmf: But the podium ended up as Ashley, Gracie, Courtney in that order.
Really hope all the top ladies start this off with clean shorts to build on :hap10:

Regardless of what Gracie does I hope it gets called fairly and consistently compared to other skaters. Someone should remind the tech specialist and the judges that a "!" does not require negative GOE, it is just to indicate there could be a problem.... use that button - it exists for a reason. A flip like Gracie's from TEB should get an edge call, but if they at least would give the bloody "!" it would be so much better.

It may not be possible to make that call, depending on where she puts the flip. I'm sure the reason they put the jump in that corner is so that the one camera used for replay doesn't give a good view.

I just want Gracie to stay on her feet during the SP. If she lands her Lutz/Toe, I'd rather see her do a clean loop than get an edge call. Here's another question about scoring. Is an edge called Flip worth more than a clean loop? I certainly hope so, as that would be the only reason for keeping it in her program.

No. The difference in BV is only 0.2 points. Any GOE is going to tip the scale in the favor of the Loop.

Then she should definitely keep the loop. Even if Ashley were to skate perfectly in the SP. I think Gracie, Provided she skate well, should win the long program over Ashley. I think.....It's too close to call. It's the 3rd place finisher that's really up for grabs. My heart says Angela Wang or Mirai but, my head says Courtney Hicks.

When I saw this program by Angela Wang, I swore she'd be the next big thing in US Skating and I'd love it if she proved me right and skated her heart out at Nationals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_BwNmS3dMY

One thing I will miss is Samantha Cesario skating from 11th - 5th with her Carmen LP. If there was 1 skater I could resurrect from retirement it would be her: Despite being slowish, her jumps had great lift and she could sell a program without obnoxious facial expressions or arm flinging. I wish she could've stuck around and worked on her speed and jump technique

Ditto times ten!

Do you know what her percentages are in practice on the flip and whatever else she might replace it with?

And what is the point? Even if she hits 100% times in practice (and we have no way of knowing that) we all know what her percentage of 'hitting' a flip in competition! Arr...:bang:
I thought there was an interview after the GPF where Gracie said that they were going to change a layout of the sp?

Frank should be smart enough to know no matter how many times Gracie lands the flip in practice that her nerves in competition make it a shaky jump when it counts.

But how do you know better than Carroll or Gold herself whether a loop out of steps would be more reliable in competition?

Well statistics are a place to start.

http://skatedb.net/modules/skateDB/index.php?page=player&playerid=601

Clean 3F is 36.7 % or 11/30 attempts
Clean 3L is 71.4 % or 20/28 attempts - so almost twice as many with fewer attempted.

granted this does not take into consideration pops into double/singles... but i think she does that more with her flip than loop - though she did pop her last 3L in her SA free into a double... then again she has popped to SP flips into to doubles this season as well.

How does anyone know that "nerves" is the problem with the flip. Michelle had problems with flip at both Oly's. Maybe the technique Frank teaches for doing it is at fault, then maybe not. lol

Thank you for providing that clip Frida. I tell you what, I sure wish she'd take flip straight down the ice instead of pushing into the wall like she does. It's kind of like Tatyana Malinina's old take off where she'd kind of go in a circle. I'll have to find it. I think she did it in her SP at Worlds in 2001.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IUA51ukhuU Here's her 2001-2002 LP. She fell on her opening Lutz and the nailed the rest of the program and ended up winning the event. The flip is her second jump and she definitely takes it on a curve. Similar to Gracie. She has a great forward scratch spin at the end of her program. Why don't skaters do those anymore? Wait, doesn't Ashley have one in her LP. Tat's much faster and she also spins for a longer time.

Here's my question. Was that clip from her Short or Long Program.

Well more tweets are coming through about other ladies

Mirai and Polina are practicing now

TSL says Mirai's jumps are around (they tend to be pretty honest on her jumps), based on their report it looks like she did a clean 7 triple program and put a 2a/3t/2t in the second half. They also say she looks happy :)

The last tweet they had said Polina was leaving out her jumps in her run through.

They're doing pretty comprehensive jump by jumps on each top skater as they do their run throughs. Worth taking a look!

Fingers crossed Gracie doesn't pop that flip! (I'll take an edge call or a fall over a 2F).

Well, I'm on the anti-flip bandwagon for Gracie, but maybe she and Frank are playing the long game. Keep doing it, suck it up when she messes it up, and hope it becomes more reliable the more she puts it out in competition. Just maybe that 3F will be ready by 2018.

I know I've asked this question before but, I'm going to ask it again. If YOU were coaching Graice, Would you have her go for the flip or the loop? My next question. When Gracie misses her flip, is it popped or does she actually fall?

If I were her coach, I say do the Loop in the short. But do 2 in the long to continue performing it under pressure. She has popped, doubled and fell on it.

Let's see..... Popped, Doubled, and Fell??? Maybe she should leave that jump out completely. :eekn:
