Thanks for posting the start orders!

Now, I know this is supposed to be the season of peace and light, but now I am really, really confused and disgusted by the schedule and need to vent. There is no sense in the Saturday schedule. The argument for splitting up the flights was to make it more accessible for the media to broadcast live the final flights for all 4 disciplines. Stupid idea, since there is nothing gained for the media in doing this, and better possibility of putting together a public friendly program when it isn't live. It seems that the idea of an "exciting evening of skating with the top flights" for ticket purposes has gone by the wayside. Now we have 2 flights of women, followed by 2 flights of dance, followed by 1 flight of women, followed by 1 flight of dance. In this scenario, women are done by 3pm and dance by 4pm. Definitely not prime time. Why on earth would the event planners not keep the events whole? There are only 3 flights, and in all disciplines, lots of competition for at least places 3 to 5. National team, funding, and so on are all on the line. For the integrity of the sport and the event, there is no reasonable excuse to break up the flights. This is not fair to the skaters or the judges. In the really, really old days, when there used to be a ton of flights at senior at Nationals, one could understand the need to break up an event. But there are only 3 flights, and all of these skaters have had to qualify to get to Nationals. The cream of the crop is already determined. All athletes deserve to be judged in the same consistent manner, as part of one cohesive event, and may the best skaters win or find their rightful placement. Judges deserve to be able to have the best chance of providing that consistent judging, and knowing they were able to do their best, most fair judging from start to finish. Ugh!! I think it is better for the general public and sport if the events are kept whole. If the entire event is streamed online, and then a very general public friendly broadcast/show is put together for the main networks, those a little more interested in the sport will catch a better flavour and see the up and coming/developing skaters on the stream, and the general public who just happened to be channel surfacing and are less invested will enjoy a good show. This is much more likely to build audience and interest, and hopefully more participation, in the sport. First and foremost Nationals should be about doing what's best for the athletes. It should also make sure it takes care of the integrity of the judging process, and takes care of the tech specialists and judges. Then we take care of media and the casual viewers. By keeping the events whole, we can take care of all of these interests.

I guess we are making a little progress, moving in the right direction. Next year, can we please bring back some integrity to the process, and run these events as the full events they should be?

Good vent NorthernDancers. It is really hard to build the energy and excitement of the event when it is split like this.
It is confusing to the casual fan as well. At 2013 Canadians in Mississauga, when the final result of the senior ladies went up on the electronic scoreboard and Veronique Mallet came up as fifth, people who weren't there for the earlier flights in the day when she skated were saying "who?" "Did you see her?" She had skated so well earlier in the day and no one at night saw her including the TV. But she put herself on the national team.
That can happen again in any event and it's a shame.
