Viennese Waltz: Any tips for solo dance?

It's been a very long time since I've practiced the Viennese Waltz so I can't really advise you on the technical aspects.
But what I do recall is that the Viennese is a lighthearted and fun dance to do. The testing skaters worked to make this dance look effortless - and by that I mean putting a smile on their faces during the patterns, knee bend in the appropriate places, and corresponding but not excessive arm movements.
I seem to remember a mohawk as part of the pattern (near the end of the pattern?) and one of the dancer used to say she was "putting a hat on the dance" when she got to that mohawk.
