What if...

Final competition results were still based on the ordinal system...

Specific to the Men's competition...
  • Would we have had the same gold, silver and bronze medalists?
  • Would the top-10 men have finished in the same order?
  • Would the US men have earned 3 spots to the 2017 World Figure Skating Championships?

Assumptions used:
  • Ordinals for the SP and FP were awarded based on the skater's placement (according to the current COP system)
  • Total ordinals are based on ⅓ for the SP placement, and ⅔ for the FP placement.
  • Only the top-10 skaters (Men) were used in this hypothetical scenario.

Ack no. While I didn't like using "last season Worlds" as a qualifier for spots, I dislike ordinals system even more. Rather have a "this season" type of qualifier, because last season is so..... last season.

my issue with this is that you are assuming that ordinal placements are automatically assigned to COP scores...

for instance, skating as early as he did, I doubt Misha would have placed as high in the SP.... he would have been relegated to perhaps in 10-12 place....

so it just doesn't work like that at all ;) and for instance, maybe a guy like Patrick who messed up big time in the free would have not lost that many ranks in ordinal system, especially without fall...

This is fun to do but it doesn't make much sense as the system of COP allows for smaller AND bigger margins between skaters.... while the ordinals doesn't.... like yuzu's SP was way above others.... so he did have a cushion ...etc etc....
