The announcers said nothing at all about Kazakhstan. :|

Really? Ours waxed lyrical. They had factoids and info about all the countries - I assumed this would be some kind of info pack that all the commentators would get.

NBC Olympics does have researchers who prepare briefing materials for the anchors -- extra stuff beyond the handout information from the LOC/IOC.

(BTW, one of the NBC researchers is former figure skater Cindy Hsieh, who was profiled in a newspaper article yesterday. She has been on the NBC research team for every Olympics since 2010 Vancouver.

But .... I am finding that the NBC on-air team sounds a little "flat" tonight. (Just my two cents. Not the fault of any researcher, I am sure.)

The NBC anchors are three longtime colleagues from the Today show ("breakfast television"), who usually get along very well, AFAIK. So I am surprised that their chemistry/energy feels a little "off" tonight, at least to me.
But I do not want to sound overly critical of the NBC anchors. This type of assignment is not as easy as it would seem.

I missed USA, Russia and Brazil :drama: The Brazilian broadcast said a little of every country, even if it is to say "They have never won a medal" or "This is John Doe, he won X".

Not to mention the huge production costs for NBC.

NBC needs to sell ads to bring money in to cover these ginormous expenses.

You mean wasted costs. I didn't ask them to do that. And all this to get worse coverage than countries that have paid far less. :disapp: Bloated just like the Olympics themselves.

I know what you mean. It feels like the NBC trio is so focused on their pronunciation guides that it is interfering with their usual banter. But that's OK. They want to be respectful by getting the names right.

What, no comment about Tonga's flagbearer in this thread?

Is NBC going to show the lighting of the torch before 2am? My guide said this was supposed to be over at midnight. I guess NBC didn't account for their 2 hours worth of commercials. :rolleye:

No Pelé lightning the fire. My hope is for Marta!

Marta would have been a nice choice, as it would have shown how far Women's Football has come on in people's conscious. And would have been a brilliant way of recognising all she has achieved in the sport. But it was never going to happen.

The second match for Brazil's women's footballers is only about 24 hours after the Opening Ceremony. And it's against Sweden. So, they need all their players to be on the ball. In fact, I would say none of the women's footballers (from any team) were even allowed to go to the Opening Ceremony.

My money was still on a footballer to do it. Specifically Ronaldo. Like, after Pelé, he is the best known footballer in the world. And the most succesful.

On the other hand, Ronaldo has recently been appearing on an advert for an online casino, and the IOC may not want to be associated with that. Plus, he has got a bit tubby now, so I don't know if he would have been a good advertisement for the pinnacle of sport... :p

But, I've only just got up, so I haven't watched any of the Ceremony yet. (And anyway, I've still got some of Wednesday's matches to watch before today's!)

So, I'll find out later whodunnit!

U.S. athletes do not receive government funding.
Many of the NBC advertisers are sponsors of Team USA Olympians and Olympic hopefuls ... who in this case are counterparts to winter athletes, such as figure skaters whom I "know" and love. One of the reasons that I have a high tolerance for advertising.

Another reason is that some of the advertising is very well-produced and showcases Olympic athletes -- what I would consider advertorial content.

I agree. I'm a huge fan of the Olympics, summer and winter. I never miss the opening and closing ceremonies. This was not a highlight. It was OK, but nothing more.

Of course, I was watching the NBC telecast, and I'm not a fan of their "personalities" anyway. And, while I enjoy a backstory, it seems you get a lot of that on NBC compared to actual sports coverage.

NBC didn't mention any boos that I can recall. When exactly was that?

And while I'm on a rant about NBC's personality driven coverage... what EXACTLY do they expect Johnny and Tara to bring to their coverage?

Do either of them have some hidden sports insights into summer sports that I don't know about?

Or are we going to be treated to them making asses of themselves across Brazil?
