Ilia Malinin just turn 12 and he is a brilliant competitor. Keep an eye on him!
He is the son of Roman Skorniakov and Tatiana Malinina. Both parents skated in the 2002 SLC Olympics; Tatiana was the 1999 GPF and Four Continents champion.

Emily Zhan had a dud short at Sectionals (6th place) but has a great FS (1st place) to finish 2nd at Easterns. She does a Triple Salchow + Single Loop + Triple Salchow combination. If she can put two good programs together, I think she is the one to watch.

She's not ranked very high as far as scores go, but Noelle Rosa is a fantastic performer and really fun to watch. Excellent speed and spins, too. :)

I was just going to ask someone if he was Tatiana's Son. The apple doesn't fall far from the team, does it. Congratulations to this young man and his supportive Parents. Good Luck in the free program.

Cute dress for Emily. Good for her eeking out that combo! I didn't think she'd be able to.

Oh no, a pop :( Is she known for having trouble in the SP?

I didn't catch her name, but the girl who's skating after Emily is giving me life. The costume, the music, the choreo, the odango with the pink ribbons- I love it!

Christina Lyn, that's her name. :agree:

Stephanie Ciarochi- A program this fierce needs a better costume. She's a little live wire out there! I hope she gets some sponsers.

I know this is Nationals and so the creme de la creme, but I'm really surprised at how much I'm enjoying the Intermediates. I keep having to remind myself of my rule not to get too attached to younger skaters...

Hmmm. I just learned something. Apparently the Intermediate Pairs SP is factored so the TSS = 0.85*(PCS+TES). For example, the team currently in first (Esposito/Jerosch) have 19.12 TES and 21.70 PCS for a total of 40.82, which is then factored by 0.85 for their reported TSS of 34.70

Never knew they did that for Pairs. Tried to look it up in the rulebook, but apparently that info is behind a members only wall.

Been watching this skater for a couple of years now, she is a bigger girl and uses her size to really help with speed and gets good height on her jumps. Her size is a definite plus but the way she skates with what seems to be a reckless abandon and a fierry attitude needs to be polished. I was really hoping her skating would improve year over year but no such luck, though her jumps are stronger and it looks like she can out jump her competition - if only she could skate better it would not even be a competition.

My daughter skipped the Potomac Open this summer but Emily came to our rink to warm-up for it. She was doing a bunch of triples-triples there and my daughter commented on it since Emily was a INTERMEDIATE! I just looked at her results from the Potomac Open and she did fall on her short there. I know she also fell on her short at Easterns. So my guess is not-so-great results on the short is typical for her. Expect to see BIG numbers from her long.

Notable: the pewter medalist, Emily Zhang, did a CLEAN 6-TRIPLE FREE SKATE (including a 3-1-3). :jaw:

It's way too early to tell if any of these girls will make it big. But if skaters are showing this much technical content at the lower levels, it could be a sign of great things to come for the U.S. ladies.
