Another fairly strong year for Novice Men. Looking forward to seeing the top placements move on to juniors next year. They will need to introduce 3-3 combos though. We don't seem to see them as much in novice men as we do with the novice women.

Well Corey Circelli did land a 3T + 3T combo in the short here. He was the only skater to do one though in either program.

One thing is that the easier 3/3 combos for the men only merit 1 bonus point ( as only triple loop and higher get bonus points as individual jumps ) whereas for the ladies all 3/3 combos will get 3 bonus points ( 2 for the indiviual jumps in the combo and 1 for the 3/3). Much bigger carrot for the ladies to do one than the men. It is easier for the men to go for a complete set of triples first whereas for the ladies it is easier for them to go after the 3/3 before mastering all of the harder triples.

Thing is, when the young men hit Juniors they need both the full set of triples and the 3-3 combos....It makes it a bigger step than many appreciate.

Agreed.

I must say that restricting the individual jump bonus to loop and higher has done good things. At least just about all the novice men are at least trying the harder triples. It won't help to simply make every easy triple ( toe and salchow ) worth a bonus point. Otherwise there would be little incentive for anyone to push their programs beyond a winning pre-novice program.

Perhaps giving 2 bonus points for a 3/3 combination would help encourage them more.

I think 1 bonus point for the harder triples and 2 bonus points for a 3/3 would properly balance the need to develop both. And yes these should be the rules for both novice men and women.

Another idea is that Skate Canada should allow 3 jump combos as well

Perhaps some skaters at this point in development are more comfortable with triple jump half loop triple salchow than with triple jump - triple toe. These half loop combos should be encouraged as well with the same bonus as a 3-3. Many top senior skaters like doing the half loop combos as it almost completely eliminates the possibility of Zayaking

When Gogolev was novice he did a triple flip half loop triple salchow in Skate Detroit because US rules allow him to. He could not even attempt that combo in his Canadian novice mens competitions.

Where is the incentive to push when you don't even allow these elements in the programs ?
