As it is just under 20 days until the start of the European Championships, and the provisional entry lists have now been announced, it seemed an appropriate time to get the 2017 ISU Championships Predictions Game underway.

You will be pleased to hear that the rules are essentially the same as they were last year. There has only been slight re-wording of a couple of the clauses to make them clearer.

The Rules are still largely the same as for the GP Predictions Game. So, like last year, I will use tulosai’s explanation as the basis.

Rules (slightly re-worded for clarity, but in effect the same as last year):

  1. Guess the Top 5 finishers in each discipline at each Grand Prix. Each event will have it's own dedicated thread in which to make predictions. For handiness, I will provide a list of the entries in the first post in each of these threads.

  2. Although only the Top 5 will be scored, you are advised to include at least 6 skaters in your predictions lists for each discipline. The remaining skaters will be alternates in case any of the skaters you pick for your Top 5 withdraws or can't compete at the last minute.

    Competitions With Small Entries
    • If there are 5 or more entries, then the Predictions Game will carry on as per the usual rules.
    • If there are 3 or 4 entries in a competition, then we will make predictions on just the podium positions (if there is a 4[SUP]th[/SUP] entry, that will be the alternate).
    • If there are 1 or 2 entries in a competition, then that category will not count towards the Game.
  3. The target time to get your predictions in is one hour before the first Short Programme of the event starts. If the pairs are first and they start at 7pm EST, you should aim to get your predictions in by 6pm EST.

But, as usual in my Games, this is just a target time so that you are not rushing about at the last minute. Predictions for each category will still be accepted up until the start of that category’s Short Programme.

    Late Entries
    • In the event of predictions being submitted late, only those predictions for competitions that have not yet started will count.

So, using the 2014/15 German SP timetable (Dance, then Men's, then Pairs and finally Ladies) as an example:

If you submit your predictions in between Men's and Pairs, then your predictions for BOTH Pairs and Ladies will count towards the Game.

If you submit your predictions during the Pairs competition (even if your skaters have not yet taken to the ice), then ONLY your predictions for Ladies will count towards the Game.

Editing / Changing Predictions After The First SP Starts

If you edit your predictions post after the first SP has started (even if it is just to correct a spelling mistake), ALL your predictions will become invalid. This is because the only people that can see a post’s edit history is the person who posted it. So, the scorers cannot know for sure what exactly was edited.

If you want to edit your predictions, you should instead post the amended predictions for that category IN A NEW POST, and make it clear in this new post that you want that to replace your previous predictions for that category.

  4. For your prediction to qualify for scoring, you must provide the full last name(s) in your predictions. The thread of each round will include the entries for each discipline, so all you need to do is copy and paste. Abbreviations, nicknames, first names will not be accepted.

World Team Trophy

The final round of the ISU Championships Predictions Game this year is the World Team Trophy. Unlike the Olympic Team Event last season, each country will have 2 entries in each category, and we will know who is competing in advance.

Consequently, we will be able to make predictions for each category as normal. However, we will ALSO be predicting on the overall Team result.

So, for the WTT, the following amendment to the rules will apply:

  1. Since there are only six countries competing, and we only have one entry per country in Pairs and Dance, the Top 6 predictions will be scored in ALL categories.

Scoring

Each correct guess is worth 15 points. If you guess Mao will be first and she is first, that is 15 points. If you guess Mirai is 5[SUP]th[/SUP] and she is 5[SUP]th[/SUP], that is 15 points.

Each guess that is one placement off is worth 10 points. If you guess Ashley is 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and she is 1[SUP]st[/SUP], you get 10 points. If you guess Gracie is 5[SUP]th[/SUP] and she is 6[SUP]th[/SUP], you get 10 points.

Each guess that is two placements off is worth 5 points. If you guess Akiko is 4[SUP]th[/SUP] and she in 2[SUP]nd[/SUP], you get 5 points. If you guess Tukt is 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and she is 5[SUP]th[/SUP] you get 5 points.

World Championships

For the penultimate round of the ISU Championships Predictions Game (the World Championships), the rules are the same as usual EXCEPT for the points scored.

  1. As this Championship is the most prestigious in Figure Skating, there will be DOUBLE POINTS on offer. So, it will be:

    30 points for guessing right;
    20 points for 1 place out;
10 points for 2 places out.

  2. If you get the podium correct in any discipline, you will get a 30 point bonus.

  3. If you get all five predictions correct, you will get a 50 point bonus.

Consequently, you can earn up to 800 points for this round. (Thank you to Mrs. P for the idea of giving bonus points!)

So, after careful consideration, these are the Championships that have been selected as rounds for the Predictions Game:

ISU Championships Game

Round 1: European Championships (25[SUP]th[/SUP] – 29[SUP]th[/SUP] January 2017)
Round 2: Winter Universiade (31[SUP]st[/SUP] January – 5[SUP]th[/SUP] February 2017)
Round 3: Four Continents (14[SUP]th[/SUP] – 19[SUP]th[/SUP] February 2017)
Round 4: Asian Winter Games (23[SUP]rd[/SUP] – 26[SUP]th[/SUP] February 2017)
Round 5: World Championships (29[SUP]th[/SUP] March – 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] April 2017)
Round 6: World Team Trophy (20[SUP]th[/SUP] – 23[SUP]rd[/SUP] April 2017)

This thread will be available for general discussion about the game, and for analysing how the game is progressing. But, please keep the predictions and subsequent discussion about each event in the specific thread for that event:

Winter Universiade: Predictions Game Round 2
Four Continents Championships: Predictions Game Round 3
Asian Winter Games: Predictions Game Round 4

Plus, if you want a handy way to keep track who is on the podium in each round, we have the HALL OF FAME thread, which can be found at:

Thank you so much to Mrs. P and the scorers of this year’s GP and Nationals Games for making it such a success. This new game would not have been possible without you!

Good luck everybody!

Just edited the Original Post to remove the section about Non-Scoring Rounds.

If you have not seen my post in the Event thread yet, the Asian Games are now going to be a full scoring round.

So, if you want to make predictions on it, here is the Predictions Thread:

Sorry for any inconvenience this change of heart has caused. I just thought we should recognise the good work the Japanese have done in getting the Entry lists out and providing livestreaming.
