Although they won their first WC in 1981, skating to the soundtrack from Fame, real acclaim came to Torvill and Dean the following year with a groundbreaking free skate to Mack and Mabel.

I would also like to add that the same season they skated exquisite Summertime blues OSP (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6hZBxPAcls). I think many FS fans envisaged already then that those two would become the greatest legends of ice dancing.

This is SO easy for me to answer. Seeing Maria Butryskaya for the first time was simply amazing. It's kind of a long story but, at the time I was hoping to see Tonya Harding for the second time. I had seen her at Skate America the year before and was very excited to see her again. Unfortunately, Tonya had taken the summer off and was out of shape and skated badly. Fortunately, there was this skater wearing a pink and brown skirted unitard. She had such a presence and I thought she had Diva written all over her. It took a while but, she eventually became Champion Of The World in 1999. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wl9yRZOapKc

Todd Eldredge I can't believe this was more than 25 years ago!! Todd was the newly crowned US Champion and as you can hear from SCREAMING Scott Hamilton, was performing in a difficult spot because Christopher Bowman had received a standing ovation just before he took the ice. I guess Todd had been touring and was very tired before the event but, it didn't matter to me. Take a look at his "Engine" in those Gold Spandex Pants......:love:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vpFbdyIR2o

Thanks to everyone who has chimed in with the video links!

These are bringing back wonderful memories, and in some cases, unknown gems.

More! More!

When a then 21 year old Jeremy Abbott skated at Finlandia in 2006 and placed first, while watching him skate I thought, who is this fast guy with the Kurt Browning-like feet? (mind you, I wasn't much older )

He went on to medal at 4cc's in Colorado Springs that year with this program: https://youtu.be/dFj1FXhvgj0

The next season Kurt Browning actually did his SP to this and you can definitely tell what I was talking about above (this will forever be one of my favorite programs ever): https://youtu.be/mJ4XAcIbRe4 I don't even care about the jumps.......the choreography, showmanship, and footwork are nothing short of magical.

He wins the national title the next season, as well as the CoC, and the GPF.:yahoo:

Back to back National Champion, 1st trip to Olympics, 1st at SC, and 5th at Worlds with this memorable SP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jljuph8ISAQ

But my favorite season was definitely 2012-13 with the two most memorable competition programs he would ever have (not to mention a 3rd National Championship title)
SP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oeya_bPe53Y
LP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbT2P9n5Hsw (The only, legendary version of Exogenesis 3, and the best version too his 2013-14 version had too many choreographic changes for the new requirements).:scowl:

And then his quirky SP in 2014 to "Lillies of the Valley" from Pina and finally getting to work with his idol Robin Cousins on choreography....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuVQ36uvNLc He also got a 2nd trip to the Olympic games.

Say what you want about Jeremy but he is a stand up kind of guy, one heck of a performer and true artist, and never goes stale with the same style etc that he puts out on the ice.

And to close up this post here is his performance from the Legends on Ice show in Japan this past January (you had to be selected for this show)
He brought Exogenesis back from retirement due to being asked for that particular legendary program.

I first discovered Stephane Lambiel at 2002 Europeans. I was immediately taken with his natural musicality, refined moves and charisma. I just knew he would reach some great heights. And when I look back at the footage, he was still in a diamond in the rough. He has grown so, so much as an artist, and I think he still continues to grow. Stephane was about the same age at the time of my initial discovery as Deniss Vasiljevs when he took the boy in last year. It was such a déjà-vu, and I am really excited to follow their journey with all the background in my memory.

Skate America, 2013, the very first day of practices.

During the men's practices, I noticed a guy. The other men were doing run-throughs of their programs (1) with (most) or (2) without (Artur Gachinko) their jumps. Another, Max Aaron, seemingly didn't want to do anything but skate to the opposite end of the rink, build up speed, and try his quad in front of me.

But this skater unknown to me danced and boogied with every piece of music that came on: the other men's program music, his own, and even the bits where generic music was on. He was quietly joyful. He seemed not to try to attract attention, but rather to put emotion, music and care into every single movement on the ice. He was quietly charismatic. His skating was mature. He had a ponytail.

Later that week-end, he wowed us all with his Prince Question of U SP, with which he came 2nd. The audience loved him. When he did his Riverdance FS, it didn't matter that he fell once. Everyone was in love, and elated. We knew we were being gifted with something very special. For the gala, he skated with great effect to U Can't Touch This. Jason Brown skates with heart and desire to make people happy. Beginning of story, To Be Continued, hopefully for many years to come.

Easy question. Like several posts here, for me. It was yuzu's RJ0.1.
It was the first time i saw yuzu'perform video although-obviously i got into fs several years later but my friend who convert me into fs &yuzu fan, show me the video first.
At first i was like..who is this noodle boy my friend cant stop talking about, so weird. And then, before i know i became a goner. I was blind about technical things at that time, but even in my blindness i can sense that he is something special in the way he flies and soar in his jumps and his emotion bursts.
For older skater i dont know much since i'm still fairly new into skating, and for younger skater well, i think we yet to see enough of them to claim their greatness i guess.. But for boyang, 'the moment' for me was 2016 4cc. Before he was only a jumping bean for me, now he is so much more and beyond!!

Virtue and Moir debut at Worlds 2007 - They showed the quality of skating, the purity, sophistication, the intimacy, the genuine beauty of youth not seen in ice dance from very long time. After the greyish years of mediocrity (sealed by the Olympic gold of Navka and Kostomarov) It was like a breath of fresh air, a new beginning.

This was when I thought this boy would become a legend: https://youtu.be/i0bCvXHtzx4
That sheer determination and quality in everything along with huge projection is something very intimidating. I hope Hanyu will show that feeling next season very often.

This thread is about when you prospected your favorite legends of becoming who they currently are, so I don't know this fits the topic. I don't know whether this skater will be referred to as a "legend" in the future and I didn't recognize the skater's talent at the early stage because I've been a very casual fan of men's skating so watched the discipline sporadically and junior men were also beyond my imagination. However, I "got it" finally why he has been loved by many Americans and fs fans around the world.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xAG9G_m_IM Jason Brown's SP "Grand Guignol" by Bajofondo Tango Club at JGP Final 2011-12

Just watch it and listen to the cheers from the audience towards the young boy at that time. :) I've never been a big fan of him while I've certainly enjoyed watching him in person several times, so I wondered myself why I couldn't fully fall in love with his skating. Then I saw this one two days ago and rewound it like 20 times. Wow...He oozed a great deal of star quality and presence on the ice even during the juniors. His confident body movements, beautiful extensions and the sass! I guess his senior programs are not my cup of tea, but this one is different. I wish he performs to more like it; intense, sassy and upbeat programs.
