Yuzuru Hanyu: 2013-14 Season

To follow the trains of thoughts here, would an alternate scenario for Yuzuru's development have been:

- Allocate JSF scholarship (and possibly more) to Sendai rink's upkeep instead.
- Hire specialists in skating skills (stand-in for Tracy Wilson) and off-ice training -- for conditioning, posture and lines of extension (preferably from young age as seen in Cha jun-hwan and Shoma Uno.)
- Depending on whether Nanami takes on Ryuju Hino, as imaginary scenario provides her better support and funding, that rivalry with Hino instead of Fernendez (twice on podium with PChan in 2011-12) becomes a tertiary influence on Hanyu's competition nerves.
- Nanami continues to oversee his choreography (most recently in WC gala), enlisting help as needed (in slowly shedding the "Junior" packaging in time for Sochi; his first EX as senior boasted those Vertigo "sexy moves" she choreographed, predating PW by 2 seasons.)

Other issues still remain in Nanami's care:
- stamina (subject to diet, SS to skate smarter, and off-ice conditioning - which requires hiring help for Nanami's mother-wife role, in order she may devote even more to coaching.)
- curbing his urge to over-train, pacing him (in a regimentation he claims to appreciate, and Dilson implied was necessary for the long haul, if suppressing/supplanting what many ~"used to love" about Hanyu)

...what else? :)

I've always had a soft spot for Nanami Abe. Despite what Yuzu has achieved with Boser, Wilson... I still find myself much bias toward her :) I can't help but miss her and sometimes dream of seeing Yuzu won the Olympic gold then hang it around Nanami's neck just like the old days... Fortunately I'm aware of my bias and delusion so I will shut up this time

Just before the season of Sochi Olympics. Yuzuru Hanyu-18 years old goes into "serious mode".

page 1

In last year, he showed new short program (SP) in the ice show before new season started and decided performance constitution early, but does not still harden it this year.

"Free program of this season is romantic, passionate for some parts. It is almost completed but not for a stage shown yet. SP is still running into difficulties and there is some uneasiness, but I have a strong feeling that I want to show a new thing, not same as the last season. There is no change in the layout, I put one jump in the first half and two in the latter half, so I'm not very worried about it."

Just de-lurking to say it's this one, post#1302 :):

Yuzuru's comment on Notre-Dame de Paris program (Magazine Number 817 2012/11/22)

Notre-Dame de Paris brings something I'm chasing for since always even though it's a really tough program for me.

I was stuck in my comfort zone during past years, followed exactly the same patterns of choreography both short and long, the plan of jumps, spins never changed, be more specific, 4T, 3A, the order of spins, the entering second, the track of applying movements, all these elements never changed. I could master my program easily and effortlessly because I've get used to it.

Hence Notre-Dame de Paris is a totally brand new program, a big challenge to me. I don't even know if I could bring it perfectly before the ending of 2012-2013 season.

But I feel 'Yes, it's different from my own past' when I'm performing Notre-Dame de Paris. I was a junior skater last year but now I believe I could compete with other opponents for championships. I, myself have this feelings as others may not identify the differences. '

And more, Yuzuru's thoughts of his training in Toronto. (Magazine Number 817 2012/11/22)

Nothing would have changed if I'm not coming to Toronto. I transformed every aspect of myself. Being 17 or 18 just came once in my life, I would like to give my all even I know it's extremely hard. I'm still missing Sendai a lot, sometimes I also feel I'm fighting myself alone. But I determined to be a much stronger Yuzuru Hanyu for all the people whom I left behind in Sendai.

Magazine Number 822 2013/2/7

I really want to go back to Canada ASAP. I want to have talk with Orser. The trusting relationship has gradually established between us even we still have language barriers, sometimes we may not understand each other 100% . I want to examine all over myself again.

My skating was like dimmed by a pink shapes. I discovered the meaning of my heart after I came to Toronto. I realized I should not chase of my seniors in rush when I'm staring into myself. What I should do is to keep challenging myself to what I deserve.

4S for Yuzuru before going to Canada seems to me just like 4 loop for him now.

Actually, I have seen one video he landed 4S as you mentioned, but is it really true that he succeeded many times in shows? (Edit: I mean before going to Canada) If so, it should have been talked more, but I have not heard about that. Also, one of the reasons Yuzuru decided to go to Orser's team is that Javier is there, who has that 4S, and he thought it would be good for him to secure his own 4S. Yuzuru asked Javier for the tip. Sometimes being annoyed , Javier was kind enough to teach him. And Yuzuru even asked Nam who is good at salchow jump

He himself noted that it is a different matter whether he can jump or he can include it in the program of the competition.

At least, he includes 4S in the program now, and although it was not perfect, he landed 4S in Finlandia two times (2012 & 2013), NHK 2012, Nationals 2012, and lastly the Worlds 2014. These are the successes I know.
In the Worlds 2013, it was close, under-rotated with a hand touched the ice, but not fell.

Actually I am not sure if it was before Orser or after joining him he even landed 4S-3A seq in shows :)

But definitely his 4S technique changed alot from beginning with Orser to current state. Now this jump by him is quite big while at beginning it was not so big one :)

I wonder if he's had time for a brand new EX program.
Out of his old ones, which would you like to see again? (including old SP and FS programs)

I'll have to come back with my own answer after I've thought about it. :slink:

In deed, when he lands it, his 4S is as huge as his 4T. Finlandia Trophy 2013 is the example. 2 of best quality quads.

I've always been partial to the Change Ex, it's just really so much fun to watch. But I highly doubt that he would dust off that one (though it would be nice to watch the grown up version. With maybe a decent outfit this time  as much as I love the ex, the outfits were... meh)

That's a good one. But I have to agree with you about the costume. I've seen 2 versions of the costumes and I can't figure out what's going on with the design on the black top he's wearing.
I was thinking of Sing, Sing, Sing. With the same costume
This EX version with the hat would be welcome too.

were those even costumes? I know three different versions and it always looks like "well, I just grabbed a sweater before I came here, whatever"
