A bit OT but I finally got around to watching the Onmyoji movies. (I know, I know. Bad fan! Bad, bad fan :( LOL). Anyway I really enjoyed them and now I've got a bit of an Nomura Mansai obsession going. Unfortunately I haven't found much to go on English-language-wise. Mostly just clips in Japanese with no subtitles. I am trying to learn Japanese (I just started a couple of weeks ago) but it's slow going. So other than the occasional word, I have no clue what's going on.

But I did find this clip about the movie "Floating Castle" where the actors are asked to say something in a "foreign language". Suprisingly, (at least going by the gasps in the audience) Mansai spoke in English (Yeah!!:yahoo:) saying that while '(His costar) is unique' [I think he was aiming for strange or odd?]. He continues, 'His character ... is very, very cool. I'm cool, but my character in the film is unique.'

Now every time I think of Yuzu skating that program, I picture Seimei lounging around drinking sake and I hear Mansai's low purr saying 'I'm very, very cooool." What have I done? Whelp.

I also enjoyed the movies a lot. I can see why Yuzu felt a kinship to the character and the sound track.

This is my first hearing Mansai's English and I think his English is great! (I mean, for a Japanese) I searched a little and there was a video in which he talked about his studying in UK, he spent a year there and had workshops of Kyogen in English. That's why he is very good.

Good luck on your Japanese study and thank you for learning our language :hap10:

I felt he seemed to decide to continue competeing after the olympics.
Has he said something about his career?

I thought Mansai's English was very good as well! I was very impressed. English and Japanese are so dissimilar

Thank you very much for the encouragement. I'm only taking a few online courses at the moment so I'm proceeding very slowly, but I do feel like I'm making some progress.

And thank you for the link. He mentioned doing Hamlet. Which reminds me I found this clip, where Mansai is performing Hamlet and his young children are watching. Sadly I don't think Hamlet is very kid-friendly, what with so many characters dying, especially when it's your Dad's performing Hamlet. Yikes! The poor things do seem a bit agitated. Fortunately, they appear much happier back-stage. LOL I say kids but the vids dated for 2002 which means they're probably all grown up by now. 2002? That'd put it between the Onmyoji movies yes?

Would it be too much to ask for someone to translate the clip, in particular the back-stage bit at the end? They are just too adorable. I've been killed by cuteness and I don't even know what they're saying! Thanks in advance.:thank:

I finally got to watch Kingsman: The Golden Circle and I was overjoyed when the first music that played in the movie was Let's Go Crazy. My friends thought it was weird that I danced on my seat and when I told them 'it's Yuzuru's program music!!' they weren't surprised. Might have gotten distracted from the movie with Yuzuru's skating playing in my mind instead

Here's a list of all my Yuzu fancam videos from ACI. Since Yuzu didn't win I didn't record during the medal ceremony, but he was acting extra cute and apologetic the entire time (maybe his way of giving something to the fans for supporting him). Like during practice, he went and acknowledged the banners around the rink.

Last year this competition was pretty easy-going, this year there were more people attending to the point that they had security officers for the actual competition time. They didn't say anything about taking video during practice, but security did actively tell people not to record video during competition time. There were also a couple of people that had their flash on so they ended up posting signs around the rink about flash photography. In general it was a great audience and the rink was pretty crowded the entire weekend for all disciplines, to the point it got even more uncomfortable to sit on those wooden benches for hours on end!

Maybe the craziest thing I saw was the number of people who camped out to line up to be the first ones into the rink so they could get a good seat, I heard the police came by Friday morning at 2:30 AM to see what the crowd was all about. I think the organizers were slightly taken aback at the passion of some Yuzu fans, but in a good way. When I arrived at 7:30 AM on Friday morning to watch practice there was a long line of people to get in, I counted 286 people at the time and that rink holds about 700!

While the free skate was pretty lackluster, the SP was nothing short of breath taking. I've seen Ballade no. 1 before in Boston, but this upgraded version was just stunning. So much nuance and attention to detail, particularly with his arms and hands (plus my favorite spin where he basically touches his boot with his hand during the entry is back!). I just wish we had some better camera angles and lighting to preserve the performance. When comparing Ballade no. 1 in Boston to Montreal, both performances were clean, but I feel each performance has it's own unique feel and emotion. This is my favorite Yuzu program and it seems I'm not tired of it!

Has he said something about his career?

I'm feeling the same, his nuances of the comments here and there in the interviews makes me guess he is not going to retire next year. But he has not said anything particular about the near future as far as I remember.

I found this clip where Mansai is performing Hamlet and his kids are watching. Hmmm, I wouldn't think Hamlet is very kid-friendly, what with so many characters dying. Even more so if your Dad's Hamlet. Yikes! And oh dear, the poor things do seem a bit agitated. Fortunately they seem happy enough back-stage (after Dad's miraculous recovery at the curtain-call perhaps). LOL Though, when I say kids, the vid is dated as 2002 so they are probably all grown up by now. 2002? That'd put it between the Onmyoji movies right?

That's a sweet video! His son kept saying while watching Mansai's play, "I love my dad, I don't want to see him being cut! Why? Why was my daddy cut? Noooo, you can't be cut! Ganbatte, papa!!" and he said similar things as well in the backstage to his dad

His son, "Yuuki", is 17 now.

Japanese Nationals schedule.

http://www.skatingjapan.or.jp/image...lJapan/17AllJapan_summary_information0929.pdf

December 22, 17:00 Men single SP
December 24, 17:10 Men single FS

Team Japan for the Olympics will be announced around 22:30 on December 24, and my guess is it is going to be live on Fuji TV. I know JN is always on Christmas time, but it is going to be more exciting and heartbroken night this year because of the Olympics :scard7:

Probably he will compete as long as he can, unless he gets injury, I guess.
I'm really happy now :hap93:

I believe this wasn't posted yet here?

Latest translation by gladi (original article):

[ARTICLE] Hanyu aims at the ultimate dance with aggressive layout & refined programs (Kahoku 2017.09.28)

This season’s layouts are aggressive with 2 quads in the SP and 5 in the FP––furthermore, 3 of them in the second half with a 1.1 multiplier in Base Value. The skating that he learned at his training base in Toronto, Canada, too, has seen marked improvement since the Sochi Olympics. Including everything from basic skating like crossing his feet to advance to the starts at the end of his spins, Coach Orser states that [Hanyu] “always keeps paying attention and has never stopped doing that.”

Accumulating training in a watchful environment, his skating has become smooth with deep edges that grip the ice, [allowing him to use his full body well]. To ISU Technical Specialist, Shin Amano, Hanyu “looks about the same” as Patrick Chan, whose skating skills are the best amongst active competitors.

So sorry for the repeat posts guys!!! Although I've been lurking for awhile, I'm new to posting on the board and I was getting these error messages that I didn't understand. I figured out that if I edited out the quote bit the post would go through but I had no idea the earlier ones would be there as well. Oopsy :dumb:

I think I've deleted all the extras. Again sorry to clog up the boards.

Probably when you tried to quote my post, my inbox was full, which may have caused the problem (the same thing happened in another thread). I'm sorry!

This is definitely the money quote from that article. :)

Bravo to Yuzu and to his coaches at TCC.

Thank you! I thought it must be something like that. I caught the Ganbatte and other things but with the children talking over each other it was a bit difficult to understand.

Well said, he is the best representative of his famous quote: hardworking doesn't get you to the top, but your hardwork don't go to waste either.
