Thanks! Didn't notice them!

I just found the writer's tweet, replying to Tomono-kun's review tweet
https://twitter.com/ohnishi_f/status/1152839099931189248
It says: "I'll do my best to have you laugh at the second article and the rest too!"

Thanks, Tsurara! Since you said the Asahi Shibum article seems relatively simple, would you be so kind as to translate it first, please? :)

It's so nice to learn more about his background. I had no idea he had practiced karate!

Here it is! - Just making sure you all don't learn a wrong phrase for this line because of some fs tweets...)

Part 1: A Tiny Little Active Boy

A very curious boy. Played a lot to his heart's content

The boy had a tiny body, but he was more active than anybody else around.

On May 15, 1998, Kazuki Tomono (21), a figure skater, was born in Osaka. He had no health issues, but he only weighed 1,995 grams. His doctor said, "(Let him stay) in hospital until he gains weight to have 2,500 grams at least," and he spent about a month in hospital.

He was always in the front row when kids lined up in order of height at schools. With his bright personality, he was a popular boy loved by everyone. He had a lot of friends. "I was always playing a lot, playing Kick the Can for a long time, playing baseball with a squishy blob ball, and so on," he said, looking back at his childhood. On the other hand, his mother was feeling very uneasy. Whenever he found a narrow path like a balance beam, he had to walk across on it, and when he found an obstacle like a short wall, he had to jump over it. He feared nothing and always very curious. As he was small, she often felt worried all the more so about him.

It was right before his 4th birthday that he skated for the first time. To learn a sport that the whole family can enjoy together, he joined a skating class for infants at Uenoshiba Skating Rink (now closed) in his neighborhood in Osaka. "I think it had a lot to do with the fact that my mother used to skate. I started skating for no particular reasons. I was only having fun at first," said Tomono. He fully enjoyed his weekly skating lessons.

Besides skating, he practiced karate and softball. For karate, he was good at "kata" and he often got praised a lot. But as a small boy he was, he could hardly win matches and even got thrown off quite often. He started softball in a local team (for kids). He was a fast-running leadoff hitter, and his strong point was to reach base and clutter up the opponent's defense (by taking a large lead or attempting to steal base). Because he could shout out loud and well, he was once given the position of catcher too. He still loves softball and baseball.

His parents' educational policy is "wanting him to do what he likes to his heart's content." With karate and softball, he didn't have many chances against bigger players. Yet, he never whined. He never said that he wanted to quit, nor said he didn't want to go (to practice). However, he made a decision when he was in elementary school. "I want to continue skating."

It already has titles for all the 4 articles as follows:
1)小さな活発男児 / A Tiny Little Active Boy (July 21)
Developing Competitive Spirit (July 28)
The Weight To Represent Japan (August 4)
Admiring Rivals (August 11)

Didn't mean to make you wait this long for this short article! Sorry, but I had totally forgotten that it was an election day here, I had to go out to vote in the rain and all, and had to watch the result too!

Thank you so much, Tsurara, for this! :luv17:
It's a short article but very interesting. So his mum also used to skate! His family seems really supportive and wonderful.
It's so interesting to see he's always been very small and feisty, and even he himself admits he hasn't changed a thing! It's so heart-warming to see it.
I'm really looking forward to the next articles and I'm so happy that more people will have the opportunity to know more about him! I even like to imagine he will be an inspiration to kids across the country, and especially to the naturally small ones like himself!

ETA: According to this fan, Kazuki will be with Philip Mills-sensei again later this summer! https://twitter.com/mUoV2bdDLzH1zOH/status/1152868063470972929

'When I asked Tomono-kun if he was going to an overseas training camp, he said he was going to See Mills in the summer. I wonder if Dr. Misha will join us somewhere.
I didn't hear that much. I hope it will be a fulfilling training camp!'

About this boy with a paper SEV gift...

According to the boy's mother's tweets, she asked him what he would want to do if he could meet Tomono-kun in person. This boy started making this paper SEV all by himself. She secretly kept it and carried it with her to PIW today so that he could directly give it to Tomono-kun at Fureai-time. (She didn't tell him she was taking him to PIW until today because he would get too excited to go to sleep.)

At Fureai time, this boy got so nervous and all he could do was just giving the SEV to Tomono-kun. Tomono-kun half-crouched to meet his eyes and tried to wear it in front of him. (No surprise there, that's what Tomono-kun would most likely do.)

Some other fans asked him about this SEV (without knowing the episode) and Tomono-kun said it was a gift from a little child, and it appears that he was wearing it for a very long time. A lot of fans reported (or just showed) having their photos of Tomono-kun with SEV in their camera rolls.

If you see this account's moment, you can see this boy dancing to Daft Punk and Riverdance, trying to copy his moves, as well as Shoma's programs and it's really heart-melting!

All Japan Figure (Skaters) Senioir Camp Report Part 2
【Training for Expressions & Group Practice】
On July 15, Team Japan's Senior Camp at Chukyo University Ice Arena was open to the press.
- Expression Training by Group A: Shoma Uno, Keiji Tanaka, Kazuki Tomono, Sota Yamamoto, Koshiro Shimada, Satoko Miyahara, and Mai Mihara.
- Group Practice by all the team members.

After individual lessons on ice, what they did was "Expression Training" (off ice). Uno, Yamamoto, and Shimada teamed up as a trio, Miyahara paired with Tomono, and Mihara with Tanaka, to demonstrate original floor dance.
When it was opened to the press, they were doing run-throughs of their self-choreo dance. When a dance instructor gave them a prod, saying "Let us do a bit of check-ups, so each group, please one by one...", they opened their mouths to protest(?), "...That's too soon" (Tanaka), "Indeed! Too soon, yet! [laugh]" (Uno)
Miyahara and Tomono were the first to demonstrate and showed their performance in total synchro. Other skaters watching them oohed at them, but the instructors pointed out stuff to the smallest detail. Miyahara and Tomono listened to them with a serious look, and rechecked their choreo many times in the corner of the room.
Then the next was Uno, Yamamoto and Shimada. "We only have a faint memory of it, but is it okay? Can't do it well enough to receive advice yet..." (Uno) They seemed to be unconfident (unprepared), but they managed to sell their dance by a unique choreo with big jumps and spins (rolling?) on the floor.
Finally, Mihara and Tanaka's pair. They breathed in unison, moved their whole body and danced dynamically and elegantly.
Then they were given a break time, but Tomono requested, "I want to practice... (so please play the music for us)." As the instructor played the music, other groups too went back to practicing their dances.

The last session opened to the press was a group practice on ice. Kaori Sakamoto, Mako Yamashita, Wakaba Higuchi, Yuhana Yokoi, Yuna Shiraiwa, and Marin Honda of Group B joined with the (forementioned) 7 skaters of Group A, and all the 13 skaters together received guidance from Stephane Lambiel.

It started with a warm-up by skating around the rink, followed by various skating routines, including skating with their arms up, with one leg up, and skating while turning to left and right.
After 40 minutes of such routines, they moved on to jump practice. One of the jump drills they had was an Axel jump right after a turn, and to our surprise, Uno had a hard time with it. It was striking to see him trying repeatedly, over and over, until he finally made it.
For a unique drill where they jumped with their arms folded like Cossack dance, they checked each other's pose before jumping. Another drill was to jump right after a spiral. When Tomono made it clean after several tries, he hailed himself making a big thumbs-up to Shimada, who was by his side.

The next one was spin practice. Lambiel was giving thorough advice to Yamamoto while supporting his body. When they had an air-chair-spin drill, many of them failed and fell on their hips! Their laughter echoed through the rink.

And finally, they stood in a circle and had their last training session of copying the movements of a skater standing across. While committed to training, they had an amiable atmosphere. I could feel Team Japan's strong ties developed from encouraging and competing each other.

Thank you guys for the news and photos, and for your translations, Tsurara! What a lovely and moving story about the necklace!

When they had an air-chair-spin drill, many of them failed and fell on their hips! Their laughter echoed through the rink.

I am in awe of these skaters. They're so tough! Let's just say that if it was me who fell, the rink would echo with completely different sounds :p

First thanks all for the updates, lots of great news and pictures from the training camp and PIW in the past week. LOVE IT

One thing I love about PIW is that we get to see many pictures and some news about him as he interacts with the audience. His smile is so beautiful, it just makes me feel better. Also always loving seeing him with Marin, they have a great friendship and that encounter with the child fan is really so touching and heartwarming. This child is so cute with all his past videos and now this, SEV is also so nice to report about it with equally touching tweets :luv17:

I think this is Kazuki's SP ending pose, right? https://twitter.com/srk10253236/status/1153292791486668806 :luv17:
And yes I also think it is Kazuki's SP ending pose :)

About the SP, I really hope we get a video soon. I can't count how many times I watched that FSTV video of him and Mills already, lol

I guess it is now clear that he will take the risk to add 4T in his SP as well. It is sad to see how the athletes are pushed to take such steps but I am wishing our boy the best of luck, he really is working hard to upgrade all his elements this season and about the costume, I actually liked the gradient colors but not sure about the design and also that fabric used in the arms. Hopefully, he will get a better one for the competitions ;)

Kazuki performed his new SP at PIW today! Though I did see a tweet saying it was not the complete program
I do think maybe himself said it is still incomplete or unfinished. Maybe in a sense that not all the choreo moves are there or be it not well polished yet. Maybe that is one of the reasons he will go to have another visit to Mills (according to the fan's account)

Thanks Tsurara for the translations as always, I am happy we are getting this Asahi article series to know more about our precious boy

And oh, he will have a tough competition in Gensan Summer Cup this year but go get your beef Kazuki!!

Finally, I am happy to see Giu and others on the thread have their wish come true and some of you will be able to see him in Lombardia this year :hap10:

Hi everyone! Do you like my new avatar? The sun and the sunflower

First of all, can I just say I'm really upset Kazuki hasn't been moved to the Special funding category. He now has two GP assignments, in addition to being 4th at Nats like Mai and higher than Wakaba (5th) who are both in Special. I don't really see a reason not to move him up! What are you doing, JSF!? So frustrating...

But on to positive things.

First thanks all for the updates, lots of great news and pictures from the training camp and PIW in the past week. LOVE IT

Congrats, Giu, for having your wish come true!
I must confess Lombardia wasn't at the top of my list, because it's normally one of the most expensive European challengers... But who knows, maybe now that Shoma isn't going, they will lower the prices (one can dream). In any case, I'd love to go (especially if Zhenya goes there, too), but I need to wait for ticket information and schedule and take a long, hard look at my finances...

First, I corrected Google translation of this one
Just some corrections to what appeared to be mistranslated (to me), feel free to re-correct it ;)
(Btw, I didn't get rid of the odd Japanese inserts, just because it was easier for me to compare lol)

What kind of work did you do during the off season?

Tomono: The first thing is spins and my free leg. I'm working on where I can make improvements right away, and I think my free leg, on which I wasted points last season, has been firmly fixed. Since the sponsor, Central Sports runs gyms, I am getting support from a trainer for training. So it's helping me to jump with more ease, my skating has become more stable, and how to use the body has become better. I believe I'm making improvements as I'm doing better at showing my skating and each of my movements, being careful to the smallest details even to the tips of my fingers (in expression) than the last season. Especially with spins and my free leg, I want to show my improvements in competitions.

Is the on-the-ground training (off-ice) an effort to focus on the usage of the body rather than the power-up?

Tomono "Both. Training to stimulate the nervous system and also to prevent injury. Since I am still thin, I am doing a lot of weight training to make my body flexible and less prone to injury."

── Do you mainly train your lower body?

Tomono "No, upper body too. Using the whole body firmly, not partial, using the weight, feeling its weight, and correct the way I use my body while controlling it. And to have my whole body under control, since I sometimes have an axis tilting when landing a jump. Practicing on ice is of course the most important, and on-the-ground training is complementary, but it seems that my body has changed little by little. It is not the kind of training that shows a difference in appearance nor that enlarges muscle, but I am getting better and better (physically), and I am also doing core training, so in terms of controlling my body, I think I grew as much that I can feel it myself. "

In what part of your skating do you think the training is most effective?

Tomono: Stability when landing or taking off the ice (for a jump), and correction of the axis when tightening (body when jumping){in other words, drawing in arms for the conservation of angular momentum}. Both for skating and free leg, to raise the leg I think that I should have a strong muscle, and I think that I have come to be able to do more difficult positions and movements more easily by repeating the training that I was taught by (Philipp) Mills sensei, such as ballet lessons. Although I'm not quite there yet, I think it's got more stable as a whole. I am doing training while being aware of which muscle of the body I am using, etc., so I started to realize which part (of my body) I'm using when I'm on the ice too. I think that I can take advantage of that for both skating and jumping."

What made you realize that you needed off-ice training?

Tomono: "I was doing it last season too, but I didn't have a dedicated trainer for myself, besides, not like I could do it every week ... It's the first time I have a one-on-one training (with a personal trainer). I also felt that my skating skill still lacked stability compared to others around me, so I would like to continue full-scale training on a level that does not place a heavy burden on practice on the ice. "

I felt that your quad toe loop had its results.

Tomono: "It does... sort of, I think... maybe. (laughs). I have been practicing on the ice all the time, so I do not know suddenly, but it feels like I can rotate more easily than before. Some kind of stability when making it into a combination, or even when I'm landing badly, I can now manage it (to do the second jump). And my posture got a lot better. There are more things I can do now than when I started the (weight) training. At the beginning I was trembling horribly when doing a plank, but now I can even do the weighted (plank). Even when I'm just walking in my private life, I can feel the "core" of my body much more than before. I want to make use of it for skating some time (soon)."

--- Please tell us about your new programs.

Tomono “The short program is choreographed by Philip Mills, "The Hardest Button To Button" It is not the original music but the music in the contemporary work of ballet choreographer Wayne McGregor. Contemporary requires you to interpret the music well and express it with your own body, and so I want to be conscious of that. Contemporary is one of the genres I have always been interested in and wanted to do. In addition to choreography, Mills sensei gave me guidance on technical aspects such as how to use my free leg and movements in ballet, etc. The free program is “Moulin Rouge” by Misha Gee's choreography. It is made of 4 parts, with clear different dynamics and there are many appealing points. It is a number that encourages me to “do strong performance” which is my goal for this season. I want to show a new style in artistic aspect in short, and it would be good if I could deliver a strong performance in free."

Tomono, who talked about training in detail. His words overflowing one after another show how steady growth is realized.

*The word Google translated into "strong" is 力強い/Chikara-zuyoi, which is a sort of a key word for Tomono-kun this season for MR. It is an adjective to describe an appearance that presents strength, power, an ability to stand firm, or more precisely, referring to masculine strength (minus gender, let me know if you have a better translation to describe it, because I'm sure we're gonna hear this word from him very often during this season).

Q: Thoughts after the show
I went rather low-key with jumps today, but by focusing on expression, I wanted the audience to enjoy the charm of the new program. With that, I think I made a real successful appeal, and I would like to polish this program further to captivate (audience) in competition, instead of exhibition from now on.
Q: About your feeling you put into this program
Let's see, I really haven't tried a program before that requires this much strength, musculinity, or, so-called 'iroke (sexual charm)', and that is what I need to work on as well. I also want to arm myself with a lot more variety of programs in different colors. So, not to limit myself but to learn all kinds of expressions, I would like to nail each of them and make them my own. This time, I would like to express the strength of course, and what is it called, prettiness, for the middle part, to captivate people.
Q: Any changes after having Misha Ge as your choreographer
Much more than last year, it's... well... Last year, I couldn't bring out my best at last second in many competitions. This program is made to help me push myself, to encourage myself with 'I'm gonna do it' feeling, and such a wish from Misha sensei is poured into it. Not just Misha sensei, but Phillip Mills sensei too taught me with things like such ballet positions on ice. And I would like to show what I've learnt from them, what I've done, little by little in this season.
Q: Your theme for this season
Fighting spirit, I think. That's what I lacked. I would like to play the role of a fighting man. Also, my short program has a different atmosphere, and I'd love to express different sides of myself depending on the program I'm performing, while keeping such a fighting spirit inside my heart...(sentence not finished and cut here.)

A bit of a break, and I'll bbl.
