Basically, ice skating is very popular in Russia. They build a lot of public ice rinks in Moscow. Some of them are free. Looks very Christmasy and upbeat:

So... a lot of people like this sport in Russia, and a lot of people skate leisurely in winter time, so a lot of skate boots and ice making/maintenance equipment are being sold in Russia. Therefore a lot of money in this industry in general, so its logical of Russian government invest in this sport since it has a big consumer market and making kids to be active, do sport and stay healthy. Government investing just a small money comparing to the whole ice-skating market and industry in Russia. I bet a lot of western brands opened their manufacture spinoffs locally in Russia to cater their market.

So the secret is simple: figure skating and hockey are popular in Russia, and their government is actively helping this industry by promoting it on TV and building public ice rinks, which looks very attracttive, hipsterish and family-friendly.This helps sport equipment market to develop, grow and therefore bring more and more taxes to the federal budget. AND nation stays healthy and sport-active. Win win.

Wow, what an incredible outdoor rink! Nothing I've seen in the US even comes close to its massive scale.

I tried to find a Enlgish video for you. But could not. Only this: https://actualidad.rt.com/programas...4-lista-erick-yulia-lipnitskaya-profesora-e19

He is Mexican actor and journalist. He travels and shoots a lot of documentaries in Russia. He has been doing this for the last 15 or so years. Probably we can try to find this 'La Lista de Erick' episode #19 somewhere.

Its state support on top level and most have either clubs to train or a centralized training location, but they start from regional levels all the way to the top, like in rhythmic, the best girls are invited to train in Novogorsk and weed out the weak ones. It works for sports like gymnastics, figure skating and wrestling (all russian loved sports)

figure skating is probably the most popular winter sport for ladies but rhythmic gymnastics till dominate in russia overall.

Dont forget ballet, of youd like to call that a sport.

I heard similar things about ballet. There are no participation trophies. If they want to dance, they know from a very early age they need to be very good. Competition is cutthroat for little girls.

From my readings, when a child is put in a sport in Russia, they are expected to do well. Sports are not a means of getting the child out of ones hair. Often kids go to bed late at night (but get a 2 hr nap during the day).

I follow one mini russian gymnast on youtube. Her coach does things to her which would be called abuse in us of a. The flipside is she can compete with 30 other girls and usually places. Shes around 8, and she can do deadlifts, assisted pull ups, crunches, pole fitness, etc. Her mom and coach expect her to work hard and do well. I can imagine similar things happen with figure skating...

Russia has a long standing history of loving dance. Being a dancer is a BIG DEAL. Bolshoi started in 1770s. Russia has a long history of folk dancing. Maybe the figure skating rhythmics are a modern equivalent to folk dancing?

Of course, these are generalizations, but could explain why eteri and russians do so well in figure skating! Russia truly dominates rhythmics, ballet, hockey, ladies figure skating.

My understanding that it is a public park. More for culture and leasure, than nature and trees - that type of city park. They just make ice on the central alleys there and rent skates for general public in winter time there. People clearly love it, crowd as we can see on the videos is huge. So its popular.

I found how this park looks in summer time in the early mornings with less people: https://youtu.be/QURHAsCCnLQ and https://youtu.be/B8Iee1Ckidc
Big historical buildings on both sides of central alleys are museums and exhibition pavilions.

Netherlands also builds huge ice rinks, but they usually use their waterways channels throughout the city.
