I don't believe that any skater or skaters can 'own' a music, no matter how great the skating was. However, when I listen to a certain piece of music, it brings up memories of a certain skater or pair/dance team. It is not necessarily their ONLY signature piece.

Here is my list:

Bolero - T&D (obviously)
Moonlight Sonata- G&G
'Meditation' from Thais- B&S
Rachmaninoff's 2nd- M&D (many others have skated to it, but M&D come before MY eyes when I listen to it)
Rachmaninoff's 3rd- Michelle Kwan
Swan Lake- B&S (again, many have skated to it, but they are the ones I think of)
Carmen- Katarina Witt
Sex Bomb-Plushenko
Reverie- G&G
Love Story- S&P
Four Seasons-Usova-Zhulin
Memorial- Grishchuk & Platov
Charlie Chaplin music (Limelight, Charlie's theme, etc.)- B&S
Bach's 'Air'- Klimova-Ponomarenko
Lieberstraum-M&D
Gladiator-Yagudin
Karl Jenkin's Diamond music- S&Z
Josh Groban's 'Let me Fall'- B&S
Salome- Michelle Kwan
Vocalise-G&G
You don't bring me flowers-Bechke & Petrov
Turandot-Shizuka Arakawa

There are lots more, but let me hear yours.

ITA agree with you, Joe. That was the best interpretation of that music...my old coach used to insist that we watch anything John Curry.

Vash is right. When Abt skated to Rachmaninoff's 3rd, I thought of Michelle, and not him =(

Likewise, whenever I watch Sense and Sensibility, I think of Tara Lipinski.

I don't think I ever saw him. "Back in the olden times", I never knew when anything was on, that is, after my husband finally decided we could get a tv set.

Butterfly Lovers- Oh yes! I was at an Asian festival here- sort of a cutural exchange where local kids & adults perform art forms from their culture, and they have shopping tents, etc. At one point I just stopped because I heard Butterfly Lovers being played in the background. I was sure I was the only one non-Chinese that knew that music instantly, and of course Lulu's skate in the 98 Oly was going through my mind.

the same thing happened to me in a chinese restaurant. i'm asian (filipino) but it isn't known to many other asians, except chinese, or skating fans. when the waitress (she was older) came by, i discussed the music with her. she told me the legend...

Something that have happened to me thanks to FS is that I know can recognize a lot of pieces of music and know who composed them. I have always love classical music but I always had problems knowing the exact name of it. Funny is that when I hear a piece of music from the TV in a commercial, or movie or it's a question in a program or thinks like that, I said the asnwer and I always ended being stared at and asked "how do you know that??". But then again, yes well some of the pieces are not very well known but c'mon for to not know who composed Swan Lake??

I restrained myself of answering to the actual question of this thread after realized that when I think Bolero, I think Plushenko. So now I have to run a duck from all of those who can't believe that I don't think of T&D... sorry, but I started watching FS seriously after Olys and I just have seen some of the programs before that, I watched T&D Bolero on May I think.

M&D's LP in '94 was skated to Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto. It was on my list.

That is exactly why I did not list many of Michelle's (e.g. EOE, SOTBS, Fields of Gold, Lyra Angelica, etc.) and B&S's numbers because they were the only ones to skate to them (e.g. Radetzky march, sentimental waltz, concert for coloratura, Happy valley), although I do see them skating whenever I listen to the music.

Joe - you aren't the only person over 40 here.

One of the first bits of music I thought of was Don Q & John Curry.

Others associations I make are:

Wylie - Carmina Burana & Henry V

Yagudin - Winter, Man in the Iron Mask

Eldredge - Gethsemane

Mishketounek & Dmitriev - Rachmaninoff Sym #2 - so many people have used it, but I still think of them when I hear it anywhere.

Torvill & Dean - Bolero

I'm sure there are others. This is all I can think of right now (without looking at all the other posts for reminders  )
