Just posted this in the dedicated thread, but thought I should post it here too...

NORI'S THE FLAG BEARER FOR JAPAN!!!!!!

:cheer:   :party2: :points:

Well deserved!!!

This will be his 8[SUP]th[/SUP] Olympics, which by my reckoning (using Wikipedia's statistics) will make him the undisputed most experienced Winter Olympian ever (he is currently tied on 7 Olympics with Luge racer Albert Demtschenko, who will not be adding to his tally as he is one of the Russian athletes given a life ban for doping).

Delighted for him to be getting this recognition.

NORI'S THE FLAG BEARER FOR JAPAN!!!!!!

Just looked up the Wikipedia page, and it appears that Noriaki Kasai has been replaced by Sara Takanashi.

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports...ai-flag-bearer-opening-ceremony/#.Wmje2nnLi1t

The story says that Nori "will be abroad and unable to attend the opening ceremony". But, the qualifying for the Men's Normal Hill competition is the day before the Opening ceremony. So, does that mean he is not taking part in that competition?!

Well, at least the flag is staying with ski jumping. And with the success Sara has had over the years, she is a worthy substitute.

Still would have preferred Nori, though!

OK, so Nori is actually still the flag bearer. It was at the team inauguration ceremony that Sara stood in for him. But some sloppy translating into English at the Japan Times led to this confusion.

Thank you to yude for explaining the situation in the dedicated thread:

Thank you for posting about Noriaki Kasai! It seems the Japan times meant about the inauguration ceremony of team Japan for the Olympics held yesterday. Sara hold the flag on behalf of Kasai there because he was out of country. Kasai is still the official flag bearer:)
Sara was moved to tears watching the kids supported team Japan in the ceremony, I wish her the best!

And now I've completely lost the trust in the Japan times (and English kiyodo article), they are having false information again and again :bang: They probably translated this kind of article (https://www.nikkansports.com/sports/news/201801230000655.html), but 結団式 is not "opening ceremony".

I have now fixed the Wikipedia page so hopefully nobody else will get caught out.

Thank you so much yude for putting things straight.

Just saw that the young English ski jumper that I posted about in the Random Confessions thread before this thread was started, Jonathan Learoyd, has been confirmed to be going to Pyeongchang for the French team!!!

:cheer:   :party2: :points:

Absolutely delighted for him!!! For somebody so young and with so few World Cup appearances under his belt to get selected for the Olympic team just shows how much of an impression he has made.

But, I bet you that the BBC will not even mention him, because he is not representing Team GB. Yes, they are petty like that. Thank goodness David Goldstrom on Eurosport is fairer.

Jonathan is currently lying third in the Continental Cup. So, I wonder if the 2 guys above him (Marius Lindvik of Norway, and Tomasz Pilch of Poland) will be going to Pyeongchang too....

We'll just have to wait and see.

Tomasz Pilch, no. Team Poland has 5 Ski Jumpers with better season results afterall.

ETA: Six even. I forgot about Jakub Wolny :dumb:

ETA2: There are 10 Poles qualified for Zakopane. I think that's some kind of record, I don't rememeber ever so many in competition, we didn't have so many good enough to qualify....

Last World Cup competition before Olympics has ended. And it gets interesting :)

Btw. Does anyone know who to look out for in Ladies event other than Sara Takanashi? I really wish for her to medal, but we all know it didn't go that way in Sochi...

Put it like this - Maren Lundby won 7 out of the first 9 competitions this season.

Of the other competitions, Althaus won the second and third competitions, while Irashko won the tenth last Sunday.

Takanashi hasn't won at all this season. She has had 5 thirds, and 1 second. So, it doesn't look good for ending her drought at the Majors.

I can understand Eurosport has a packed schedule, but they aren't even showing the World Feed of the Women's competitions on the Player any more. And I miss seeing them!

But David Goldstom did say that Eurosport would be showing the Women at the Olympics, so that is something.

Janne Ahonen is the flag bearer for Finland.

Just a pity that he is a shadow of his former self when it comes to the jumping. Because he was great in his day.

I'm pretty sure it will go better for me than FS events :drama: And if Normal Hill won't go well there's always Large Hill and Team Event

I always enjoy watching ski jumping, those guys go so far, nerves of steal right there!

But question...when did the hill go from having actual snow on it to having tracks? Or did it never have snow? I'm rather weirded out by the fact there's not a flake of snow to be seen on the hill itself!

I hate it when wind determines results. Second round is not better than first one....

Yeah, but what to do. Indoor facilities seems like science fiction. I know there have been projects, but is there any successful? Easy for figure skating, hockey, curling etc to move indoors, but harder for snow sports. Though the weather will always bee a factor I think outdoor competitions have their charm. Mass starts are the most fair, but that’s obviously not possible for ski jumping.

Watching ski jumping once in a while for me must be like for people not watching figure skating regularly. So hard to learn the rules :palmf: Now the Swedish commentators talk about the costume rules. And that Norway has material for 40 costumes. The jumpers use them once and then gets a new one to get better results…??? By the way ski jumpers have the most unsexy costumes of all athletes.

Oh my, this takes long. They are freezing and I’m hungry.

At last a good jump from Ammann after all that waiting.
