I had wondered if this was part of the issue. Obviously not the complete story, but I do think it plays a part.

I can tell you after doing this for nearly 20 years that it's not easy getting interviews of any Asian skaters. If they speak English, it's a bit easier. Otherwise translators are involved and and it generally costs the outlet more to publish. Again, both Japanese and Chinese skating federations are very protective of their athletes. I've known many western journalists who have been ignored after sending requests to the respective federations.

If it makes anyone feel better about Boyang Jin's treatment by the western press, broadcaster Terry Gannon on NBC just said that Papadakis and Cizeron "came out of nowhere." :)

At least they're consistent.

Now I just want the commentators to do their homework, I guess. I don't know the full context of this (maybe he meant a couple seasons back), but this season? Nope.

This is a very helpful post!!!

The answer is like everything else...

He is simply not marketable enough....to get attention, you need to marketable, you don't even have to be good to be marketable...if you have the look and you somewhat achieved something...you can be marketable...

Take for example, Eugenie Bouchard in tennis, she isn't good anymore (or maybe she was never great to begin with), but she had the look and she achieved a year of really good grand slam results...so, even when she started to play really badly, she was still being pushed by the WTA people until they finally conceded that she wasnt going to happen....

Boying Jin is probably just not marketable enough to be talked about in the western media...also, just because you are marketable here does not mean you are marketable somewhere else, hence...why he is so popular in China and not popular here and why Nathan Chen is not popular in China...your nationality also matters too....

I don't think you have to be marketable for skating specialists to include you in their analysis of strong competitors. I haven't listened to the most recent one, but IceTalk didn't make the impression of mentioning more than a sentence about Boyang, whenever the other top 5 where discussed. Can't remember last time (or ever) I saw IceNetwork writing anything about Boyang in a half sentence, even if it's an article where the other top 5 are mentioned.
As others pointed out before, for NBC he came out of nowhere. Not that it matters, but TSL also don't talk about Boyang for more than maybe half a minute (even though I'm glad about that - I doubt they would have said anything fair).

I have to give props to Kurt and his commentating team though. They don't give the impression to overlook Boyang in there analysis or discussions and keep them quite fair, too.

Also, beside the point, but you'd think with his Spiderman SP he was pretty much at least decently marketable.

If Boyang isn't 'marketable enough' then for sure it isn't because of lack of personality. The western media is missing out, their loss. And I doubt it's because of "lack of access" to him. After all, there's still Youtube. ;)

And LOL to this video. Him being quick interviewed by Misha and getting smokey make up.

This little interview back in 2017 is also very endearing.

Getting eye make-up like G-Dragon! Wow. I love that Boyangee picked that one, LOL.

Han Yan, watch out, Boyang's chasing after your K-pop idol looks!!

I didn't know Misha spoke chinese:yahoo:

Misha’s grandfather was an artist in China, I believe, and the last I heard his grandmother still lives there. He is of Russian, Korean and Chinese ancestry. Misha translated for Boyang at Worlds 2016? I forget the comp, but there is a cute video of Yuzu and Shoma looking like they are counting the number of languages Misha speaks while he translates.

His WTT video was pretty fun. Enjoyed watching him devour cake with chopsticks. I think his meme-ability is up there with Yuzu and Shoma.

Who knows, maybe he'll win Worlds this year and that will change the conversation. It was a really good surprise to me that he made the Star Wars FS his own at 4CC and Olys, despite the choppy music cuts.

I totally loved Boyang at the Olys. And while watching the final group, my partner said to me: 'What about the Chinese guy? He's dangerous!'

As it turned out, he was not SO 'dangerous' - but you never know what might have happened, and a 4th place finish is not at all shabby!

Whaa so 萌!!! Kawaiii...

Didn't realise he is so cute off-ice. Sunny boy, adorable goof ball, insane jumping prodigy. One of the best ever... totally agree Western media is missing out, I am completely oblivious to all this too. Thanks for the videos. (The first one with Misha no longer works, is there another clip somewhere else?)

You don't have to be marketable to be talked discussed by the skating specialists, but... You do have to be marketable to garner some actual attention... If you are not marketable, specialists in any sport will most likely not say more than 3 sentences about you... That's just the way it is... If you are marketable, you get attention by the media, if you get attention from the media... People will talk about you... usually if you win something important, you become at least decently marketable, but it does not guarantee anything...there are always people in every sport that people forget to include in their analysis when they should be included simply because they not garner enough attention to be noticed... Perhaps, he simply has not achieved enough to reach a point of marketability, especially when you compare it to people like Yuruzu Hanyu or Javier Fernandez..

How could you even question the personality of a guy who chooses to skate to Spider-Man and not only Star Wars but specifically the Cantina song from Star Wars. Lol he is awesome.

I always thought he was a good performer and he has improved a lot. I will admit I had sort of forgot about him as a challenger due to his injuries causing bad skates. But then after 4CC I kind of went oh yeah, this is his real potential. I'm not sure how anyone could be counting him out after that event.
