Mao was always my final word on the debate regarding the Sochi debacle.... "So then, how do you explain Mao's scores?"

Well, feel free to keep the endless debate to oneself...

On the other hand, I think the following quotes from Mao's recent interview do tell us a little about what she's been thinking towards judging and scoring in general (glad to hear that she opens up about these after retiring):

Short video clip can be found here: https://twitter.com/sumerokiiyasaka/status/977490397625704448

(Just rough translations though!)

Interviewer: Talking about judging, there have been so many competitions and the judging has been quite different from competition to competition.
M: Yes, that's right.
I: So has there ever been the case that you'd think, 'I should have been awarded with better points'? M: 'Yes, there has been.'
I: Has there ever been, ''it's just unreasonable no matter how'? M: 'Yes, there has been.'
And Mao follows up: 'But to turn these thoughts around, I would want to accomplish the program that would be thought as the best by whoever watched it.'

And she succeeded!

(btw, how ridiculously stunning does she look here?)

I remember reading an interview with Daisuke post-retirement where he said something to the similar effect. Dai specifically mentioned how he felt the individual PCS components did not usually vary even though they should since they were distinct from each other (which I wholeheartedly agree).
I think probably all skaters are aware of how subjective and arbitrary the judging system can be at times. If us fans can see the obvious inconsistencies in judging, I'm sure the athletes and coaches are aware of them as well.

I also really like Mao's answers to the interviewer's questions, which I feel is a bit loaded in terms of how they are worded imo. She provided a classy yet honest answer to a potentially controversial question. I also admire how she turned to positive thinking instead of dwelling on those thoughts. It made me recall the time when the Japanese official made those unnecessarily harsh and unfair remarks about Mao after her Sochi SP and how her response was also classy but direct. ;)

And yes, Mao's appearance here was so on point as well! She has a natural and unique look that reminds me of the classic Japanese actresses Setsuko Hara http://doubleexposurejournal.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/springspringspring1.png and Hideko Takamine https://fineartamerica.com/featured/hideko-takamine-dan-twyman.html.
