Alec Guinzbourg did very well in his SP in Junior Mens'...64.70

And I notice that Walsh/Michaud only plan to complete the SP at Skate Detroit...

So either the FS isn't ready, or the priority for this event was Evelyn's singles... although at Nationals in 2017 she did her singles SP and her pairs FS on the same day...

Thing is that, according to her Instagram, she was in some kind or car accident recently. Reportedly unharmed...but the comments joked about about pairs girl toughness...

i admire pair girls...

i am not sure i can still like and laugh at the comments about them being tough... i feel bad for Julianne's many concussions... i wish they pair girls were seen as strong girls but also as fragile girls..

Seeing as M-T&M won the last head-to-head against Seguin & Bilodeau, this isn't an accurate statement either. I think it's more accurate to say that the competition for the number 1 Canadian pairs spot has bowed out. Seguin & Bilodeau defeated M-T&M at Nationals and the Olympics so they had the argument for becoming number 1, but it was a position in dispute based upon results. M-T&M did put the pressure on last season and did get the job done at Worlds. I think most of us thought we would see that battle continue. (And it's quite likely, with such talented athletes, that we will in the future via new partnerships. Just not for now).

I'm not sure what is inaccurate about "Well.... that's expected with post Olympic retirement. It's only being handed the #1 spot that's a shock." I agree with everything you've said, and think we're essentially saying the same thing. Perhaps you're reading too much into my second statement, and assumed I'm implying that S&B unequivocally held the #1 spot? As I stated, MT&M were counting on being no lower than #2; that is, either #1 or #2. I do think it's fair to say that MT&M were handed the #1 spot, because they no longer have to fight S&B for it, contrary to expectations, and hence the shock/surprise.

Well, a year ago there were three teams jockeying for the spot behind D/R, and now M-T/M are out there on their own.

A surprise... even if Dylan's retirement was expected.

And a lot of pressure to ensure Canada retains as many pairs berths as possible...when the lower ranked teams are not certain to make it through to the FS or place in the top 12.

Exactly...they are on their own...a surprise, because of the S&B break-up though, and not because of Dylan's retirement or D&R's retirement. I don't think Dylan or D&R's retirements should come as a surprise.

I also have huge respect for pair girls. They are tough; it's their human bodies that are fragile.

Thanks for keeping us current on the women at Skate Detroit...

It looks like the Canadian Junior women aren't having as good a day with the FS final group...

But Alec Guinzbourg and Ilya Kolver have done well in total scores in Junior men. Looks like a good start for their seasons, especially for Ilya who appears to have had a rough SP.

Another skater pulling double duty. She's placed well in pairs, coming in 2nd in SP & FS events with Paxton Fletcher.

Doing both singles & pairs seems to be more common among women than men. I wonder if the primary goal is to keep both options open, or to strengthen the jumps.

Uhm, I think that at this level the greater number of women is just a reflection of age.

Paxton Fletcher was skating domestically in singles as a junior last year and got as far as Challenge... the national qualifying event held in December.

Male pairs and dance skaters can compete as Juniors at an older age. Once they hit seniors age as singles they tend to specialize...

But at the younger ages we see a lot of boys doing two disciplines... often singles and dance to start as they don't have the upper body strength for pairs at that point...

The logic is that boys/men are a relatively precious resource, so the system wants them to keep their options open. And ice dance lays down early memory of skating with a partner not to mention skating skills and expression...

Corey Circelli and Bruce Waddell of TCC are both competitive as Juniors in both singles and dance. Corey has a singles JGP assignment so far while Bruce and his partner Natalie D'Alessandro have a dance assignment.

Drew Wolfe of the senior pair team Ruest/Wolfe skated in ice dance and singles at lower levels. When his dance team split, he moved east to TCC to train as a singles skater, but was quickly scouted for pairs.

To me, pair girls (or women) are really tough. Not only do they have to trust their partners, they have to land on one foot, they have to be able to do triple jumps, good (synchronised) spins, let themselves be thrown (assisted) in jumps with so much more difficult landings than when you do the jump on your own, and have to get held up on one hand during lifts. Brrrr! I could never trust another in that way and still be able to do my own thing - because you have to be strong yourself too. I've never understood why throw jumps get less points than individual ones. I mean, due to the togetherness (it's not just the man throwing, it's also the girl herself taking off) the landing requires so much technique and harsh landing due to the throw aspect....and when she falls after a throw, oh my. Terribly respectful of any 'pair girl'.

Meagan mentioned on Instagram that she's in the middle of doing the exams to qualify as a technical specialist.

Just based on her technique commentary on TSL, etc., skaters beware -- she'll be the second coming of Shin Amano.

Interesting....

Usually, officials qualify for both technical caller and judging roles, even if they tend to specialize up the line.

For some reason, it seemed that she was heading towards coaching...

But this sound like a good fit for her...

And an incredible commitment of volunteer time after a competitive career...

I wonder if we'll be seeing her around the circuit of Quebec and Eastern Ontario competitions as she works her way up in technical calling and judging certifications.
