This year's European Championships in the Individual All Around just concluded, and Melanie De Jesus Dos Santos from France became European Champion, GBR's Elissa Downie was second, Russia's Angelina Melnikove was third.

You can re-watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wblSTVfMVc (Spanish commentary) and here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POZkrxioEus (Italian commentary)

Shame we don't get a four apparatus feed somewhere

Don't forget the official English streams. Amazing quality and the best commentary currently available in gymnastics: https://www.eurovisionsports.tv/ueg/

Qualifications actually had an official 4-apparatus stream at gymtv.online. And everything is available worldwide without having to pay for it. The coverage is really amazing!!!!

Thank you! I'm glad someone gets it

Paseka has had extensive back surgery last year but is back now. Just a few hours ago she became European Champion on vault once more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FR3b_-giVQ

As you said, Mustafina is back. Melnikova is looking wonderful and consistent (so far an AA bronze and UB silver at Euros, floor final is tomorrow). Simakova is struggeling a bit but is the best Russian beam worker, so that's something. Ilyankova continues to be a bars specialist winning the Euros bars title today. Akhaimova is coming into her own on vault and floor. Spiridonova is still a bars specialist and continuing to compete. Eremina has had back surgery as well last year and is slowly coming back. Nabieva and Tutkhalyan are competing for their local teams. Sadly, Alexeeva has decided to end her career in the national team and is focussing on college (Stanford). Komova seems to have retired for good. Afanasyeva is now a choreographer at Round Lake!

The juniors are very promising, though. Listunova (2005), Urazova (2004), Gerasimova (2004) and Astafyeva (2004) won Jesolo gold over the Americans!

Ah I wish I had thought about that name myself :p

Well, some good and bad news. I will miss Komova, she was such a gorgeous gymnast. I don't know if we are ever going to see that kind of talent now that difficulty -even messy- is the only way to win gold. But she has struggled so much, I understand why it became too hard for her to continue. I hope she is happy now and maybe, she'll become a coach one day :).
I'm glad to read that Afan is also sticking around especially if it's to create routines for the team. Her 2011 and 2012 are amongst my all time favorites.
I have some catching up to do. Komova loosing in London broke my gymnastics heart and the domination of Biles in Rio broke it even more. Even Musty winning her second olympic gold could not save those games for me. I'll see if the new promising juniors will catch my interest.

Do you know what happened to Grishina as well ? And Belokobylskaya ? Last time I heard she was doing ballet. Wonder is she made it.

I found Komova pretty annoying last year, tbh. Which is sad, because she's such a wonderful gymnast. But she hyped her comeback like it was the greatest thing ever, and then just didn't deliver and acted like a child when Alexeeva (who was better) made the teams over her, throwing in the towel, saying she was mistreated. Not a very graceful ending to her competitive career sadly....

Grishina's story is super sad. She had good Euros in 2013, but then struggled. She got married and had a child. Then her mother took all her cars, her money and her apartments (which Grishina all got awared from the state due to her Olympic medal). She had to live in a motel room with her husband and child. Eventually she went on TV to get her story out there and sued her mother to get the money and property back. They settled with Grishina getting one apartment and her car back (no money or other property originally being hers). Grishina said she agreed to it, because she wanted the fight to be over with and simply a place to live in. Such a tragic turn of events. :(

Yes, Belo went into ballett. I'm not sure what became of her.

Yeah, and as with any artistic sport, mens gymnastics isn't considered 'masculine' enough by the general populace and sponsors.

That's so puzzling. Is it because of its English name? Because where I'm from nobody considers men's gymnastics to be an artistic sport. I just came back from the arena with my brother, a dude in his early thirties, who repeated over and over how gymnastics is "a queen of all sports".

Edwin's statement is a broad generalization and as such is neither true nor false. Saying men have trouble finding sponsors or an audience for their sport because of a lack of masculinity is plain wrong though. There are a million other reasons for that (like that the judging is complicated and hard for a layman to understand, that there aren't 80 competitions a year like there are NBA games, etc.). If anything, it's way harder for the ladies to make a career out of gymnastics and find sponsors since their careers are so ridiculously short (though it's gotten better).

Has there been any news of ragan smith retiring from elite? She posted a picture on instagram back in april in an OU leo and has OU 19 in her bio.

Not hating on this sport, but can someone explain why the choreography in the floor exercises is always so...weird? Like more often than not (the not being Nastia Liukin I guess), the dance elements are so awkward and cheesy. Compared to a sport like skating for example, you’d think it be comparatively easier to incorporate more refined dancing in a sport like gymnastics, especially since gymnasts are the objectively more powerful athletes. So what happened?

Does it ever stop?
https://time.com/5629228/larry-nassar-victim-speaks-out/

Haven't been following USAG efforts in child protection closely. Have any legal action been taking place, perpetrators convicted, victims compensated?

Now MAG is also coming forwards in abuse accusations and the lack of recognition and subsequent action by the governing bodies:

I don't think Wieber ever came forwards with anything accusatory re. Geddert.
The parents of the other gymnasts that were abused and even crippled should sue probably.
I wouldn't be surprised Geddert was in league with Nasser while this all happened. Geddert is a sociopath, egomaniac and control freak and had CCTV camera's everywhere on his premises, if any secret recordings of a pedosexual nature are found ....

I don't think so, but one doesn't have to retire from elite in order to compete in college. Shallen Ollsen is a good example, she competes for Bama and Canada. Although yes it is usual to retire from elite. But not necessary,. I heard Morgan Hurd has committed to Florida. Ladies! We need you at BAMA!

They went the tumbling route (like what I fear will happen with the quad and figure skating). Good dance is worth little to nothing. It's just kind of something to do between tumbling passes. If you want to see dance in gymnastics, watch collegiates. Toe point and such still have meaning there (they are still on 10.0 system also and I hope always will be).

How is MAG NCAA presented in the media? Does it get enough coverage?

WAG NCAA is all over the gymnastics discussion boards and its coverage is available on the internet.

It gets little to no coverage. It is also (for the most part) in a conference I don't have a TV station for (I have SEC). I get around it by subscribing to the University of Oklahoma ($9.95 a month) during the season, but most people are not going to do that.

Here's a tweet from Mark Williams, head coach of the OU Sooners "access is a significant factor in interest level." https://twitter.com/wellsgymn/status/1147531116720611330

Well, I'll be danged. Mykayla Skinner is taking a year off from NCAAs and looking great for such a short practice time. She went out there and threw down a bar routine which quite frankly scared me a bit (she threw huge difficulty in it). Lots of form errors but successful completion with no falls. I wish there were more than 4 spaces for the Olympic team. Fortunately next Olympiad we are back up to 5, but that doesn't help these ladies. Simone had an off night, but is still leading by a lot. Night 2 note: Trinity Thomas (NCAA - Florida) is there competing tremendous difficulty - unfortunately not always successfully, but great job getting here after the NCAA season.

No matter how admirable the attempts of Skinner were, I hate to see those 'suicide' routines.

World Championships EF always have these Vaults of Death attempts by the so called 'apparatus specialists'.

NCAA is usually good for the gymnast, and with the rules different from FIG, often quite enjoyable to watch.

i don't think she did either, but i have a hard time believing she didn't experience abuse from him. he enabled nassar after all.
