I logged into UK Eurosport player and checked the schedule, and I see nothing for SA. SA is usually not on the linear channels, but on a player separate non-commentary feed. I don't even see one of those. Maybe a bit too early still...

Yep, it's too early for the Eurosport Player. It only does a week at a time, which means we can't get a full picture of the coverage we will be getting until the Monday of competition week.

I'm still planning on continuing to do TV Schedule posts for the Eurosport coverage on the Monday morning. But, because my unblocky friend doesn't work on the ESP Player website any more, I'm afraid the posts won't be as detailed as they used to be for the continental versions.

But, at least it will be something.

*looks at the, admittedly unsurprisingly miserable, TV coverage for the Netherlands*
... right.
Okay then, Eurosport Player livestreams it is! :rolleye:

Looks like the livestream is confirmed. I can see the listings for the competitions. Hurah!
I'd forgotten how awful US timezones are for European viewers, though, yikes. looks like I'll have to go with the archived streams. I'm just gonna assume they will be archived, right?

What would be the rest? The gala?

They honestly have no excuse not to show the Ice Dance at least, we have two teams competing!

Don't forget, Eurosport is a pan-European channel that is based in France and now owned by an American company. So, unless the coverage of the sport in question is produced specifically for British Eurosport, having a lot of British / Irish participants won't make any difference to the coverage.

The figure skating coverage is produced for Eurosport International. So, it's not just us that has that problem. It's the same for Eurosport France, Eurosport Deutschland, Eurosport Nederland, etc.

As I said a couple of days ago, I will be making out the full TV schedule post to the best of my ability this morning. Starting in about 15 minutes, actually (I want to get a couple more of the guys from the Armenian Cup Men's FS watched first).

2018 Skate America

Now, that was a pleasant surprise.

You know how I was saying that the Eurosport Player site wasn’t agreeing with my unblocky friend any more. Well, it turns out that they are only disagreeing when I am signed in. When I’m not signed in, it is working the same way it did before!!!

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

There doesn’t seem to be much variation between the continental versions for Skate America. But, as normal for Skate America, the bulk of the coverage is on the Player.

I should add, I just copied the table over from last season. So, I didn’t check if all the links still work. Hopefully they will.

^ Caroliza_fan - many thanks for all your hard work!
So far SA doesn't look too bad  every time before a season starts I get into panic that it might be the year when BESP stops covering figure skating altogether so it is always a relief to actually see it on sky schedule -yay!!!
Do you think it will be very daft to hope that some of Worlds 2018 coverage on Saturday might turn to be the SPs instead?

Awww. You're welcome.

And I am exactly the same. I panic every season too, not just about the figure skating, but about most of the winter sports that Eurosport have traditionally shown. Because they are all getting edged out of the linear channels by other things, and relegated to the Player.

My main fear at the minute is that, now that Comcast has bought Sky, will we eventually see the figure skating move over to Sky Sports? After all, Sky is now the sister network of NBC Universal, who own the American rights.

We got rid of Sky Sports over 20 years ago because the subscription prices for it were extortionate. It is only worth paying if you watch Football, Cricket and Golf. And none of my family are interested in any of those sports. And much as I like figure skating, I wouldn't pay the prices that Sky Sports now costs.

Plus we have all heard the complaints on this forum about the NBC Universal coverage of figure skating...

(I reckon that if Sky did take over the figure skating, they would just use the American commentary. So, no more of our beloved Simon, Chris and co. )

That was my original thought too. But, as Miller has pointed out, there are only 2 segments on what is our Friday night / Saturday morning. So, probably not enough skating to fill out the 4½ hours (unless they put in adverts after every single skater, which I would not put past them!)

It's disappointing that so much of the LIVE coverage is on the Player, where we won't have the company of the British Eurosport commentators. But, it's better than nothing. And at least we will have them for the TV highlights of the segments that are only being shown on the Player.

I'll never understand, why can't they show Skate America live in Poland? It's not like they have something better to broadcast in the middle of the night...

The managers probably feel that doing a LIVE broadcast overnight would cost too much in terms of the overtime pay for the staff that would be required. Cheaper to just play out recorded programmes, which could be set to start playing at a certain time in advance, meaning nobody would need to be on site.

Just gonna drop this here:

I'm noticing more and more of events on the Player have commentary now. Could be a trend as they seem to be moving a lot of things off the linear channels to the player. All the winter sports I follow (alpine skiing, ski jumping, biathlon) are all still shown live on the linear channels. Other things I watch on YouTube and so on.

That's a good point.

My recent experience with things on the Player that have commentary is restricted to just motorbike racing. For the British Superbikes (which finished at the weekend), British Eurosport is the host broadcaster and so stream all races on the Player with commentary. In the past, they would have continued showing pictures from the circuit in between races, but now they show an information card in between races, telling us what class is up next.

For World Superbikes, the Player used to stream the World Feed without commentary for the entire meeting. However, this season, they have only had LIVE coverage on the Player for those races that are not being shown on the linear channels. But, on the other hand, they have put the Eurosport commentary on top of the World Feed pictures for these races.

Before making out the TV schedules, my worry had been that they might use this tactic for the figure skating - only broadcasting the World Feed on the Player whenever there was nothing on the linear channels. But, they look to be doing the same as they always did.

Whether there is any commentary or not, we will just have to wait and see.

The only other thing I have watched on the Player over the summer was the ski jumping Summer Grand Prix. British Eurosport's linear channels only showed short highlights programmes in the wee small hours of the morning, but the competitions were shown LIVE on the linear channels on the continent. And, as a result, we only got the World Feed with no commentary streamed on the Player.

So, it's anybody's guess what they will do. But, my money's on there being no commentary on the additional streams, for the reasons I mentioned in my reply to cathlen's complaint above.

What's a pity is that there will be commentary on the Pairs SP when it's shown on the linear channels even though the actual event is evening time west coast America and middle of the night Europe. How they do this I don't know because I'm pretty sure Simon/Chris won't be staying up till the middle of the night to commentate it. Also I've always got the impression they do their commentaries live and at the rink - they're always making comments about the crowd size as if they're looking round the rink, and I get the impression they're very much old school when it comes to this sort of thing - I never get the impression they're doing it after the fact, even against a video.

Hence if this is the case why not get them to commentate everything and then do whatever it takes to get the commentary on the Player, plus if they do happen to show a highlights programme of something that was on the Player you'll automatically have the commentary - I also remember the odd occasion when a programme has gone out on Eurosport on the continent but not in the UK due to different scheduling and things and the UK Player has not had the commentary, but if Simon and Chris are commentating it for the continental programmes why not do whatever it takes to get the commentary also on the UK Player.

So between the TSN networks all of Skate Canada international will be live on tv but it changes numbers. Friday afternoon's coverage is on 1. Friday night's coverage is on 2, Saturday afternoon is on 3 and Saturday night's is on 4. Luckily my cable package changed and I get all 5 TSN channels.
