Oops! I forgot that with it being one of the Majors that it would be starting earlier in the week than the GP's were.

Right. If everything works out today, I'll make a start on the schedule post first thing tomorrow morning. And if not, then it'll be first thing Monday morning.

By the way, Matt Chilton came out with a good speak during the coverage of the Women's Downhill from Cortina d'Ampezzo yesterday. He was listing all the Alpine Skiing that was being held this weekend, and then added:

"What a weekend to look forward to across the Eurosport platforms if you are a fan of winter sports, particularly Alpine Skiing. And of course we'll have all the Jumping, the Nordic Combined, the Biathlon, and the Cross-Country, and anything else we can think of that happens on ice and snow. You can find it all right here along with the Australian Open - we need a couple more channels!"

Finally! Somebody who works for Eurosport saying what we have been saying for years! :bow:

Mind you, I am really worried that he might get into trouble for saying that. Because he has already got into trouble recently, for something he said during the last Women's Alpine race of 2018.

It was an honest mistake. He couldn't decide whether to say "The Austrians are desperate for some success" or just "The Austrians are desperate for success". He started saying the former, but changed his mind mid-sentence, and the result sounded rather rude (use your imagination!)

He corrected himself immediately, and then apologised. But, it was very noticible that for the first couple of Women's races of 2019, Nick Fellows was commentating instead (he normally commentates on the Men's races). And I was getting worried that Matt had been sacked, because I have always preferred Matt to Nick (apart from his actual commentary, I like the way that when giving times in GMT/BST, Matt ALWAYS says "across the UK, Republic Of Ireland and Portugal". Everybody else I listen to just says "across the UK").

Thankfully, at the next weekend that both the Men and Women were racing, Matt was back, but was commentating on the Men. So, he hadn't been sacked. And this weekend, Matt and Nick are back in their normal seats. :biggrin:

So I hope it remains that way.

It’s gonna take me a few minutes to figure out what he ended up saying, I guess I’ve not got a very dirty mind!

You know until you said it I didn’t realise Portugal was in our time zone. But you’re right it’s always better to be inclusive.

(Which is why we really should change our name from GBR to UNK or UK something but a topic for another time...)

I'm just glad that it can all be watched on the player. But it would nice if we had it on the linear channels with commentary. I always enjoy Simon Reed.

Anyone know what NBC Sports Gold is like? Do their streams have commentary?

I just saw a rather lengthy commercial on Eurosport about figure skating on the Player. Pretty neat, but at the same time, it doesn’t exactly hide the fact that they don’t much care about airing figure skating on the TV channels anymore.

And until I heard Matt saying it, I didn't realise it either. Thinking about it, though, by rights Spain, France and the Low Countries should be in our time zone too (and in Africa, so should Algeria, Morocco and Benin). Just look at where the lines in the Oceans are in this map:

But, it is a nuisance if neighbouring countries are in different time zones. So, it is easier for these countries to just fall into line with neighbours Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

That said, I do think it would make more sense if Spain used GMT/BST. After all, the whole of the Iberian Peninsula is within the area designed to use GMT/BST, and there is a massive natural barrier (i.e. the Pyrenees) between Spain and the rest of the CET/CEST area (i.e. France), but no barrier between Spain and the GMT/BST area (i.e. Portugal).

Which is why I am dreading the impact of the recent online vote about whether to get rid of daylight savings time in Europe. Because the majority of voters were in favour for getting rid, the EU has now decided that countries can decide themselves what to do about what the time is. So, if the UK sticks with DST and Southern Ireland doesn't, the island of Ireland could end up with 2 different time zones for 6 months of the year.

That happened on the island of Cyprus a few years ago. Turkey got rid of DST, and Northern Cyprus fell into line with Turkey rather than with the South of the island. Suffice to say, that situation only lasted for one year, before the North returned to using the same time as the South. (The change wasn't very popular in the first place, but everybody was against it after a school bus crashed in the mountains because it was too dark, killing 2 pupils and the driver).

Hopefully the countries in the British Isles will see sense and continue to use the same time. Like, imagine the impact on TV channels which broadcast to the whole of this archipelago, trying to tell us what time something is on at... :eek:

I agree. I have just purchased the Eurosport player myself and will be happy to seeing it all live from the beginning, and hopefully also have the chance to rewatch some of the events because I can´t see every event live. On the other hand I don´t like the way they are not airing it on the TV channels, showing that it has become less important to them. So I hate that the money I spend on the Player at the same time goes to someone that doesn´t think it´s value enough airing it on television. For example, I would think there is a lot of older people which are used watch such events on television and doesn´t know about the player or are technical enough to use it

That´s such a shame if they won´t be able to watch it.

European Championships

I’d like to say that the reason that I only got one version done before breakfast was because I was watching the lunar eclipse. But, the truth is that I was so tired that I just couldn’t get up.

As it turned out, it is very overcast here, so I wouldn’t have seen the eclipse anyway.

Plus, I knew that there would be a bit of a delay between doing British Eurosport and the other versions because, when I was having computer problems last week, I decided to uninstall Hola in case it was causing them. And I decided to leave re-installing it until I actually needed it.

Anyway, the coverage on the linear channels isn’t as comprehensive as we would like. Although there is LIVE coverage of everything except the Men’s segments and the Gala, it is not LIVE coverage of the entire segment.

That said, there is 1h 45m of coverage of the Men’s SP straight after it finishes. So, I suspect that there is actually LIVE coverage of the final few groups of the Men’s SP being shown on the continent, and that it is being shown on a delayed basis on British Eurosport due to the LIVE tennis on British Eurosport 1 shifting the LIVE biathlon over to Eurosport 2 here. But, I will check that after breakfast.

EDIT: My hunch was right. The Men's SP is being shown LIVE on ESP2 Intl. from 11:45 GMT to 14:45 GMT.

The thing that is really galling me is that British Eurosport are showing 3 hours of highlights from last year’s edition when the first few groups of this year’s Ladies SP are happening!

Please be aware that some of the LIVE coverage on the Player is labelled incorrectly. The Opening Ceremony that is being held in between the Ladies SP and the Pairs SP on Wednesday is labelled as being the Short Dance, while the Short Dance on Friday is labelled as being the Free Dance. Incidentally, the actual Free Dance on Saturday is labelled correctly.

Eurosport player is actually showing a separate stream of E2 International of the men's short with commentary. Since Simon is doing the Aus Open, Nicky Slater seems to be going solo.

Yep, watching it now (Chris Howarth is actually with Nicky).

I posted about this additional stream in the Competition Thread for the Men's SP, but never thought to edit the schedule post to include it when I spotted it in the listings (which was when I re-opened the Player at the end of the first resurfacing). :bang:

So, sorry to anybody that has missed watching LIVE as a result. :slink:

BUT, there will be extensive highlights on British Eurosport 2 once the Biathlon is over (14:45 GMT), lasting right up to the start of the Pairs FS coverage. So, all is not lost.

Quick question if anyone knows, I can't remember from the past. For the US ladies short tonight, it starts at 8 on NBC sports gold and then on TV at 9. DO you know if on the actual TV they play the skating live from whoever is going at 9 and beyond, do they start the flight from the beginning and show everyone, or do they just pick and choose who they show from the best skaters? Or does the actual event not actually start until 9 and its just talking or something for an hour?

Wonder if a similar thing might happen with the Free Dance. Every other Eurosport is starting live at 2 p.m. UK time, but UK only joins at 3.15 p.m. No sign of an additional stream on the Player at the moment, but maybe something to keep an eye on.

Also the weather at Kitzbuhel. The Men's downhill has been run today, as bad weather is forecast for tomorrow, and they're going to have the slalom then which can run in much worse conditions. Also no sign of the Men's LP being shown anywhere live, but it may just be worth checking in the morning to see what's going on, you never know you might just get some bonus coverage on the TV.

I just looked, and the ESP International coverage of the Free Dance has indeed been added as an additional stream on the British Eurosport Player now. In fact, they have added it in twice! :laugh:
