ISU results http://www.isuresults.com/results/owg2006/

Note – All skates are listed in competition order

Surprisingly well documented, this was an event with an amazing pairs field, a men's field of Plushenko vs. the world, a dance event expected to be extremely competitive, but marred by the infamous original dance where a record number of teams had mistakes, and a hard fought ladies event that ended with a leading challenger withdrawing and a surprise winner.

For Tolstoj who mentioned the event as the one the one that started it all!

...or the staredown.

Barbara Fusar Poli, right? I'm surprised her partner didn't freeze into solid ice on the spot from that stare.

What I did notice was some of the even by skating standards outrageous ID costumes :luv17:

Yes Barbara really gave it to Maurizio -the stare went on and on as detailed in the cold shoulders link.

The skaters came to play in the costume department. It was the Olympics of costume design too!

I've just noticed that Lambiel got level 3 on all of his SP spins. If he got level 3, then most others should have been level 1 in most spins. Whatever happened...

Plushenko won by such huge margin but all American commentators agreed he shouldn’t have medaled at all!

 No. They criticised him but didn't say that. Read the comments under the NBC video.

"The commentators were obviously watching another person, than me and the audience..."

We didn't heard their voice because of the crazy audience. Otherwise I have seen many versions of the Godfather. This was the worst in choreographically, I beleive this was the result of Mishin's coaching tactic.

Why was that? It was an excellent skate. I'm not even a real Plushenko fan but I admire and very much respect his resilience in managing to get medals (of which two golds, albeit one at a team event) at 4 Olympics. And this one in my view was a deserved gold.

Sasha Cohen's LP here is an all time masterpiece. It just doesn't matter that she fell.

It was rather beautiful...and after the first minute just wonderful to watch! She really picked herself up after those first two mishaps.

I have seen it before, but it's still devastating. But I like the commentary (at the time I had Dutch Eurosport and alas I don't recall their reaction) 'amazing body language'.

So many of the couples had real talent and had a chance to medal making their mishaps all the more heartbreaking. They all handled it differently - there was the stare down of the Italians, the calm acceptance of the Canadians, the quietness of the Bulgarians, Lithuanians and the second Italians. The competition had a number of coupes pushing the difficulty and falls happen when hard things are tried and you ended up with a competition not unlike in the singles events when quads and very hard triples are tried under extreme pressure. I agree with the Splattfest commentary from Judy Blumberg and the reporter summed it up nicely. They were right about one other thing - dance was finally seen as being very athletic and not just a pretty show.

The scoring system was new and the rules for that particular season were revamped from the season before. There wasn't any guy who got a Level 4 on the change of foot spin in a single position, you had to do an edge change on both feet to get max level (or a multidirectional spin!) and nobody was able to. On the combo spin, he didn't do a second edge change or any of the extra features aside from difficult variations, so again only Level 3. On the flying spin I think it should have been called Level 4, but I guess they decided he didn't hold his last position long enough.

I love these Olympics. People were still skating much like it was 6.0, so we got actual meaningful choreography and a desire to appeal to the audience, in addition to complex spins and steps, but without all of the useless transitions that clog programs now, and without the horrendously shapeless and discombobulated sequences that are currently called footwork sequences.

Thank you for responding Blades - I always enjoy reading your opinions. I too think that there was a lot of interesting choreography and meaningful footwork. These days the skaters seem to value a rococo style of skating when a simper musically placed element would make the program more memorable. I think a lot of it was due to the skaters themselves -many elegant ladies, a dance field full of talent, interesting men who were both technicians and artists and many talented pairs as well. I particularly enjoyed your icon - Lambiel is one of my favorite skaters, his choreo is always interesting and well though out.
