Re: costumes

Hee...fun thread here.

I really loved S&P's Love Story costumes--Well, not exactly. Jamie's dress was a nice change from a lot of the over-frilly, overstated costumes, but not wonderful. However, David's outfit was perfect. I just loved the different shades of grey on him, and the little sweater vest over the collared shirt. Actually, David always looks really classy, and elegantly simple--IMHO, he consistently has the best costumes for the male half of all the eligible pairs. I do like how S&P's costumes coordinate very well--and I liked her dress for this year's SP very much.
While we're on pairs...Elena's Meditation dress is gorgeous (Anton's outfit is okay, but I'm getting tired of all this thin, dip-dye, flowy fabric. ); Shen & Zhao's LP costumes are nicely understated, but, while I highly enjoyed their exhibition, their neon pink & green costumes had me shaking my head. (looked like they belonged in the late 80s/early 90s 8o ) The other Chinese pair (forgot if it was Pong& Tong or Zhang& Zhang) who wore black w/ shiny bronze decorations looked like they were imitating Yagudin, but not pulling it off quite as well as he does. (BTW, once I figured out that it was a mask/face--took me half a min.--I really liked it; compared to a lot of other men/skaters in general, it is understated...fits w/ the program very well too, IMO) Oh, but the worst pairs costumes were Totmianina & Marinen's LP--the drabness just enhanced the slow, boring, uninspiring feeling of the program. (but who can forget the amazing stretchy arm!? I'll forgive them for those costumes just because that was so hysterical...)

As for dance, I actually sort of like A&P's "I have a dream" costumes--but did anyone notice that Yoshie Onda totally borrowed Anissina's dress for her LP?? I appreciated that L&A's destructed costumes actually had meaning and unity w/ the program behind it, but otherwise I dislike long, ripped, thin fabric hanging down--which dance teams seem to love. :( OTOH, I always dislike Shae-Lynn's outfits (especially the OD this year--yucky huge pink ruffle on side, and didn't look at all spanish...), which usually aren't "shredded". Naomi L & Peter T look thankfully conservative compared to other dance teams, and I like their FD rock costumes.(although, anyone notice that all the pairs/dance exhibition costumes looked similar to this: red dress for women (possibly leather), black leather pants & white shirt or somesuch for men. Not a bad style, IMO, but got a bit overused...) Liked Drobiazko & Vanagas's Worlds FD costumes much more than the Olympics ones (still not so great) and liked their exhibition outfits very much--maybe mostly because the blue was such a welcome change from all that red, black & white.

Look at the long post--and I haven't even started on ladies and mens singles! That had better wait for another time....

Re: costumes

I would have to agree with you. David always has a great outfit on. I agree that B&S costumes are usually nice, but they do use alot of the dip-dye fabric. I thought their SP outfit at the olympics was nice and went with the music. IMO when the outfit doesn't go with the music, all your attention is brought to that and you are not focused on the skating.

Re: costumes

My main objection to S&P's Love story costume is that it accentuates the sweat stains under Jamie's underarms. It must be something about the color gray. The last time I saw this phenomenom was during a production of the ballet "Anastasia" by the American Ballet Theater here in NYC. The title character wore a gray costume in the third act as Anastasia goes crazy in an asylum and she frenetically flails around (think Irina doing Tosca) all the while her pits are stained a darker shade of gray. Couldn't stop focusing on them during the entire scene! Jamie costume had the same effect on me!

Re: costumes

I really liked Michelle Kwan's 1998 Long Program outfit. I think it was the really simple blue outfit.

I love most costumes that B & S wear. I love the one's they wear when they do "The Kid". It's cute.

Re: costumes

I would agree that Michelle's 98 LP dress was beautiful. Yes, it was the simple blue one. I have realized that their are some skaters that are the biggest offenders of bad costumes. Here is a list of skaters IMO who are the biggest offenders of bad costumes:

Irina Slutskaya
Evgeni Plushenko
Totmianina & Marinin
Rudy Galindo
Alexander Abt

I am sure I will come up with more. I will keep adding...

These skaters pay TONS of money for these costumes. Get something that looks GOOD and goes with the music!! Not to mention fits!!!

costumes: biggest offenders

I disagree with Spyralz on including Rudy on his list of the worst. His costumes do evoke a reaction in some instances, but it's as often positive as negative.

The Brady Bunch costume that appeared early in the topic was taken directly from the cover of their album "It's a Sunshine Day." The oldest boys performed in that thing. Rudy was being authentic, like it or not.

Some didn't like his violin costume for "Rondo Capriccioso" while others thought it was brilliant. I agreed with the latter. However, I'll probably fail completely to display the image of it below!

Just my biased two cents...

Re: costumes: biggest offenders

Hey Jules,
CONGRATULATIONS ON
:rollin:
:smokin:

I'm just so glad to know I wasn't the absolute LAST person on the forum to figure out how to do those!

So, what do you think Joan and Melissa would do as the Fashion Police for figure skating? Why am I asking the question?

BTW, not to break anyone's heart, but there was a humor column in the WASHINGTON POST about how the average viewer who knows absolutely nothing about skating or skaters (except who Michelle Kwan is) evaluate the skaters. Example: the writer's wife and friend decided they didn't want Irina to win because she had too many pierced earrings in one ear. And she WANTS to get her bellybutton pierced--also her tongue...hmmm...I knew there was I reason I like that girl:p The writer himself gave a "thumbs down" to Michelle's Olympic SP because the costume looked to him like a Roman gladiator outfit. So, all those years of training, winning bunches of world gold and silver medals, spending tens of thousands of dollars for Vera Wang costumes, and all the average viewer cares about are earrings and whether your costume looks like something Russell Crowe would wear.

As for the men, IMO, as long as they are lousy skaters, the worse the costume, the better. At least you have something to look (and laugh) at for four and half minutes. I've said this before, but when Ilia Kulik did his Olympic program, "Rhaphsody in Blue" at the World Pro competition without the giraffe shirt (he'd donated it to some skating museum), I actually missed it!

Interesting comments from the Post rgirl

Sounds like a bunch of 5 year olds were watching and commenting. Now I expect that from my daughter (she thinks there should be points for the prettiest dresses, and I may add her and I RARELY agree!)

I wouldn't put Rudy on the worst dressed list. His Baron Rothbart outfit was just perfect!

And I liked the violin thing, considering the piece.

But the Brady's while authentic was way too much junk to suit me. But not as obnoxious as Candeloro in Wild Wild West.

OTOH, Candeloro's 3 musketeers was great. It helps to be French going to 3 musketeers.

Re: costumes: biggest offenders

Okay, well I'm sorry I put him on the list but, IMHO his costumes are always too distracting when he skates and I am only able to look at his costume and not what he is doing with his skates. I would agree that Candeloro's 3 muskeeter's outfit was one of his better costumes. To add to my worst offenders list Fusar-Poli & Margaglio.

nice

Jenny Kirk reminds me of Nancy Kerrigan... does anyone agree. I have to agree that I luved Michelle '98 LP dress... I also loved her '98 SP dress. She's had so many great costumes!

Re: nice

I don't think Jenny Kirk looks at all like Nancy. She is smaller than nancy and a better skater in my mind. Along with the my offenders list I am going to start a list of skaters who hit or miss (to elaborate they go back and forth between wearing stuff I like and wearing stuff I dislike) here are some skaters that fit this category:
Sarah Hughes
Bourne & Kraatz
Berezhnaya & Sikharulidze
Lang & Tchernyshev

Re: nice

Jenny's dark hair thats pulled back and her costumes remind me of Nancy. I luv Tim's "An American in Paris" costume, but he's had some bad ones... ("7 Years in Tibet"). I think he's gotten better in his skating and in his cotumes since he went to Frank. LOL.

except for...

I agreed with your statement that David P always has great costumes - until I pulled out my tapes from last year's Worlds and Champions on Ice. When I saw the blue velvet thing he had for the exhibition to Cha Cha Cha d'Amore, I thought EEEEWWW!!!! I'll try to find a picture of it.
