Thanks Mathman! The 1992 Olympics was the first time I remember watching figure skating. I still have the Weekly Reader with Kristi on the cover that we got in 2nd grade during those Olympics. All of that spring I roller skated around our basement pretending I was competing on ice. My brother and I even had a mock medal ceremony complete with us singing the national anthem!

Some of my favorite skaters to watch are/were:

Kristi Yamaguchi
Michelle Kwan- I lived in her neck of the woods for eight years
Angela Nikodinov
Timothy Goebel
Elvis Stojko-His physical prowess on the ice caught my attention
Josee Chouinard
Todd Eldredge- I used to think of him as a "wooden" skater; IMHO, he cuts a rather elegant figure on the ice
Irina Slutskaya
Shen & Zhao
Midori Ito
and last, but not least
Alexei Yagudin

I know my list is overloaded with U. S. skaters. It wasn't until the early 90s that I started paying attention to foreign skaters.

Of course you root for the ones you really like, and Lu Chen was beat by Michelle Kwan in worlds 96, Olympics 98, world pro 98 and.... ouch....

Sorry, gezando, I'm not sure if I got you right: Do you really mean to say that nobody who roots for a skater beaten by Michelle has got the right to critisize her? I root for Jenna - so I'm not allowed to post my opinion about Michelle?
I'm sure that you didn't say anything against Irina, let alone against Sarah back in 2002! ;)
But probably I got you wrong :rolleye:

It's always nice when your favorite wins the gold. However, it is not necessary to switch to another favorite becasue your favorite did not win gold. Your favorite skater, imo, should be one who has proven him/herself over time.

I wish they had cliches like baseball for Best of the Year and Best Rookie of the Year, etc., and judged by a Panel of honest sportswriters.

Lisa, I assume by "criticize" you mean constructive criticism. There is a huge difference between good will skating criticism, "posting an opinion" and purposeful chronic skater dissing, taking a skater down a notch as often as possible, wishing a skater do poorly, and persistent negativism, ala GI towards her least favorite skater. Please do not equate that to "good will criiticism" or "posting an opinion". I know the difference, I am sure you do too. Some posters behave that way because their favorite was beaten by their least favorite. We have seen some Kwan fans did that to Tara, some Lulu fan did that to Kwan, and Kwan beat Lulu in 1996? Chen got over it, evidently some of her fans did not.

Have I ever say anything AGAINST Irina and Sarah? Definbitely not, I was tickled pink to see Sarah won her Olympic gold medal. I was asking the skating gods to grant Irina her first world gold in 2002. I hope some Japanese skater will win gold in worlds 2004.
