What was the reason for cutting down the length in the first place again?

Don’t remember reading an official explanation, people guess is because they want to reduce the broadcast time 🤷🏻*♀️🤦🏻*♀️

Agree that skaters are cramping lot of elements in less time and look dead tired by the end of the program, also they got less time to recover their concentration after a mistake so my guess we will see less clean programs

Okay, I see, thanks for all the explanations. I wish they settle on whatever is best for the skaters by next season.

Watching Lombardia toady and the men event is so exhausting. Aliev and Shoma look like they were sucked out of energy in the second half. Now with only one less jump, they lost 30s to rest and adjust.

Question for all the tech people, if you were to keep the 4:00 length but you have to eliminate another element would you take away another jump?

i want all the 30 seconds back from previous programs in previous years that were boring. :)

if we were to add all those half minutes together, I'd probably save a year of life.

Haven't the women been doing their programs this way (4 mins, 7 jumping passes) for years? Granted most don't to quads but still . . .

Plush was against this rule change; in an interview he expressed it thus:

In the new season, there will be changes in the rules. How will this affect figure skating, including your work?

– When they are finally approved and this will be in May, then it will be possible to talk about something. Because there are still hesitations. There will be grades of execution from -5 to +5, they want to shorten the free program by 50 seconds. I think this is wrong. Figure skating is developing, growing in terms of technique. I on the contrary would have added time and would have made the program five minutes long, not 4.40. But decisions like this are making.

So you are against changes.

– The new judging system is a way to nowhere. When skaters jump quads, they need more time to recover. And you still need to show music, interpretation, you need to extend the program on the contrary. The new rules won’t be a good thing. We will go back on 10-20 years and we will simply skate and wave beautifully. My manager and I are preparing a letter to the ISU about these rules, we want to explain all this. That it will be just the killing of figure skating.

Here we go:

1) JGP event in Kaunas
Trusova's 4Lz https://youtu.be/eJ3GvpMh_cE?t=312 marked as UR here http://www.isuresults.com/results/season1819/jgpltu2018/jgpltu2018_JuniorLadies_FS_Scores.pdf
a) beginning of a jump (to determine direction) http://fastpic.ru/view/103/2018/0908/810131f8afd87227c979139bdbe1e723.jpg.html
b) prerotation and toe pick phase http://fastpic.ru/view/103/2018/0908/e636254804329de31da09993698115a2.jpg.html
c) landing http://fastpic.ru/view/103/2018/0908/32e65f5a9b12ae1fb222dbc82fcd37d5.jpg.html

I would say 45-80 degree at worst. It's a shame Sasha was robbed of her historical achievement just because of it. Technical Controller Ms. Ekaterina SEROVA

2) JGP event in Richmond
Scherbakova's 4Lz https://youtu.be/lkI1vQw_Ckk?t=301 or in slo-mo https://streamable.com/1d6gk marked as UR here http://www.isuresults.com/results/season1819/jgpcan2018/jgpcan2018_JuniorLadies_FS_Scores.pdf

First two pics are from when body is still in the air. Again I would say 30-60 degrees at worst.

3) Sherbakova's flips were marked as having flat edges in the protocol above

First 4 frames are having clear inside edge while 5th is in a middle of a take off phase already. What makes this artificial "mistakes" even worse is the fact that there were tons of other skaters with true lips and flat edges - which were ignored. Technical Controller Ms. Kari-Anne OLSEN

P.S.: actually I am almost sure now that there is some unspoken order among ISU judges to not let russian girls get clean 4Lz ever. I won't be surprised if Sasha's clean 4Lz in Slovenia, JGPF and JWC as well as possible Anna's 4Lz will not be ratified either.

It is not less exhausting, it is more exhausting.
Yup, they all definitely looked totally exhausted, from what I saw.

I think it's just going to take time to adjust. These competitions are the first season with the new rule so the skaters aren't used to it yet. But I think the up and coming skaters will be just fine with it.

I like the rules that make things more even between the men and women. It's the way it should have always been.

And unlike many fans, I like that the freeskate is shorter. I think shorter freeskates will make it easier to watch all the skaters. (Admittedly, I stayed up long enough to watch Vincent Zhou and Jimmy Ma last night but then I was just too tired and went to sleep before finishing the rest). And it will make it slightly easier for competition organizers to schedule too.

Difficult. My major problem with the reduction in pairs is that I won't see any SBS spins in the LP this season. I love that element. However, the fact that 20 pairs skaters will get to do a final instead of the former 16 is quite a big compensation - I mean that at Worlds Deanna Stellato could not join in the final was a big disappointment while the pair had skated well in the Short. and with 20 entrants they would have been able to show their Free to the World.

With the men it is slightly different. I understand that it's all the more difficult to compete with multiple quads with 30 seconds less, but on the other hand I've more often than not enjoyed skates with only triples or one quad with a lot of skating skills and transitions in between...so I'm not wishing yet for getting the 30s back. We'll see.

The problem is that most skaters will probably reduce transitions because of that and not the quads. And they will still get PCS because of high TES...

I'm fine with the current length; in fact I prefer it, as it gives the programs a slightly better balance between the different kinds of elements. The skaters who are just coming up from Juniors this year will probably handle it best, as they're used to skating at that length and their choreographers are used to working with it, but I think there will be a shift over the next few years regarding what a good 'senior' program in men's singles looks like. We might start to see more skaters choosing to go for fewer big-points elements but doing them better, and at the same time putting more emphasis on getting justifiably good PCS - not necessarily the ones at the very top of the field right now, but those in the middle tier that the next group of top skaters is going to emerge from. I'm for it, if they do.

They will still have to squeeze choreo sequence into those 4 minutes.

And any choreographer who's worked with senior women before already knows how to fit seven jumping passes, three spins, a step sequence and a choreographic sequence into four minutes.

"Skating under 4 min now is harder than jumping the 4A" - by Yuzu in latest interview.

I thought he was joking when he said it - now it seems he wasn't trying to joke.
