So, in my quest to learn all about blades, ive become curious about a variety of blades. I’ve stumbled upon “Step” blades even so this has been a deep dive. lol. I’ve seen mostly discussion about matrix vs John Wilson and MK blades and Paramount vs all of those.

There hasn't been much discussion or comparison of the Riedell blades at all. Their Titanium and stainless blades are interesting. The runner seems magically fitted into the titanium frame somehow.

Riedell compares the blade rocker profile of the pinnacle to the gold seal. But without the tapered tail and side honing I’m not sure how the dynamics of the blade can actually be compared. How can a blade respond similarly based solely on the rocker and not the other features?

The same question goes for paramount I guess since they only follow the rocker profile as well. Does anyone here have comments or experiences on these copies? The engineer in me is interested in the way these are constructed and the effect of the titanium vs the aluminum housing for theses combination blade constructions.

The features like tapering/side honing/parabolic are about how the glide feels and don't make much of a difference until you are extremely advanced. The rocker profile is how the blade responds to where the weight is on your blade and any skater that can do a three turn should be able to feel the difference.

I've posted a few times about our experience withe Eclipse blades. They used to make a "clone" of the Coronation Ace called the Mist, retailed for about $250 (same as CA). They changed that blade to stainless steel (now called Aurora) a few years ago and closed the Mist out. I got hold of 3 pairs for $89 each. My skater used two pair and started single jumps in them. We moved on to the authentic CA before using the third. It was a bargain at the time, but there was something special about the real Wilson blades and she was instantly better on them all around. I don't think the profiles are the same, despite the claims. I appreciated the cost savings at the time!

on my mobile so bear with me:

thanks to all who responded.

I read about your mists @Sibelius. lol. I did a search and couldn’t find much about their titanium blades, which I find intriguing from a materials science perspective. I’m not sure how good The aluminum is at transferring energy from skater to blade To ice. I don’t love the Matrix from a theoretical standpoint but DD wanted them. I’m discussing Risport and Gold seals With her, but she is sorta resistant. It would probably be a big change but we shouldn’t need to switch for a while.

I was curious about the effect of the side honing and tapering on the overall performance of the blade so I’d have an idea if a paramount is a better compromise. Thanks @gliese

its so interesting that for all the design ideas, an old standard still surpasses the new “Tech” I’m super curious to see what the carbon blades contribute to things.

I would go with Gold Seal. Paramount doesn't hold a sharpening as long due to it's design. Sure it's lighter, but drinking a glass of water adds more weight to your body than a "heavy" blade will and its not enough difference to reduce strain on legs from repetitive lifting (boots would be more important for that). Paramount is also cheaper but won't last as long.

Any other brand that claims to have a comparable profile to another blade is likely not accurate. No one I know has felt a similarity when trying Riedell blades. Paramount is the only one that's really comparable.

Do not get Matrix or Riedell. Boot companies really should just stick to boots and let blade companies do the blades because boot companies rarely do well at making blades.

Paramount 440C hold edges really well , less sharpening too comparing to carbon steel .
