I'm worried about Adam, he's got a lot of hype too and if Rafael really did not prepare them for this schedule change, well... my expectatives are so low as possible.

By the way: “The time of the skate didn’t affect us. We would skate at the #Olympics at any time, any day” @alexa_knierim excited about her first Games. https://twitter.com/ISU_Figure/status/961827505043722240

They were skating later though. And their practice was at ~10 am local time IIRC, which is a big different compared to the men who were at 6-7am.

Everyone is blaming NBC prime time for the early figure skating...I have a different take. I think it's designed to put the short track speed skating in primetime Korea time. Short track speed skating is incredibly popular in Korea and I think that Korean television would want to show that in the evening for the most viewership

That's a good point.

I remember reading an interview with Nina Mozer where she complained about the schedule saying that it's just cruel and not reasonable to expect athletes to perform well when they have to wake up at 4 am for their practices. It was 6 months ago at least. She also said that in that situation going for ultra difficult elements is plain dangerous so they would go for quality (or something like that). She's so strategic and I can see now how she was absolutely right.

Edit: I kinda hope she'd passed her advice to Kolyada and his coach :(

You have to remember they are competing really early, not just skating really early. It's not like they can just wake up and go skate at the Olympics like you say. The schedule necessarily shortens their warmup time and throws off their pre-competition rituals.

As far as your second point goes, personally I think it is pointless to try and increase the popularity of skating in the US without a US lady being a medal contender, since the American public has proven time and time again this is all they really care about. Even Meryl and Charlie couldn't make US Ice Dance relevant.

I am from the US and am a big fan of skaters from other countries, these are some of the skaters who made me so excited to watch figure skating: Katarina Witt, Gringkov and Gordeeva, Elvis Stojko, Alexei Yagudin, Yulia Lipnitskaia, Yuzuru Hanyu, Mao Asada.

I don't think people in US are that biased to not want to cheer for skaters from other countries.

LOL at all the people here that wondered if Japan would even advance to the finals.

Hope they make Uno do the free as well. They can definitely pull off a bronze with his help.

I don't know --- maybe they still have a chance to win. There's only 5 teams in the FS -- and I can see it being something like CAN, USA, JPN, ITA -- and if CAN opts to send Seguin/Bilodeau rather than Duhamael/Radford -- there's a shot Z/E could pass all of them. I guess it depends on who qualifies and who the pairs are.

That's a good point. But then Duhamel and Radford have the chance to step up and nail down the team victory. That way they can be national heros and Olympic gold medalists, too, regardless of how they fare in the individuals (when they will have to contend with Sui and Han and everybody else).

Yeah, based on Duhamel's remarks, sounds like they're at the ready if a Gold medal is theirs to have. I think they're going to go out with a bang at Pyeongchang, so why not do a few more segments?

I remember in Sochi Elena Ilinykh said she was beyond thrilled to have the gold medal in the team event but she REALLY REALLY wanted the medal in the individual event even more. Meagan, from everything I have heard and read, seems very much the same. I bet she really wants that gold in the individual event more then anything so gold in the team event wouldn't change anything (unless she can claim herself a double Olympic gold medalist ). No doubt she's one determined lady :agree:

So social media has been a buzz the last half hour or so - Patrick Chan wasn't on the practice ice for the Men's Team Event practice, but Keegan Messing was... I'll be super excited if Keegan gets to compete in the team event!

Jackie Wong said he's not convinced. Could be a strategy to throw OAR off. However, I tend to believe it will be Messing in the Team Long.

Is that even allowed?!

That Keegan might have a chance to get an Olympic Medal has me giddy.

With Keegan likely in, and Kolyada not looking good in today's practice, I predict a win for Adam in the Team Long:
Rippon, Tenaka, Kolyada, Messing, Rizzo.

Was Kolyada at the practice? I would be very surprised if Aliev doesn't appear in the Team Free after what happened to Kolyada at the Team Short.

Yep, Kolyada was at practice. Also, Z/E were at practice. It looks more and more likely that OAR is subbing in ladies and pairs. A pairs sub would pretty much be a concession to Canada for the gold.

I'd say it is a wise decision if T/M will not compete at the Team Free. They can carry the momentum into the individual event after the great showing at the Team Short. They should save some energy for the most important event. Poor Kolyada, but he can get an opportunity to redeem himself in the Team Free perhaps.
