I don´t understand it either. Both Schott and Kiibus got a spot already, not sure why Nicole would get the second one. Why also give it to someone who has got a spot, and not someone like Josefin Taljegård who placed higher then Schott at WC? Looking at the standing for WC 2021 looks like every skater below Josefin got a spot for GP, but not her? I guess there must be other requirements as well, but I agree on that it´s very weird that Schott got a second spot!

With replacement's spot, money the host country/organizer need to spend play a big role. From all the skaters on the list, it is easier/less expensive to host Nicole Schott, especially cause she has training practices in Italy, maybe exactly in this period of a year. All the grand prix hosts follow the similar route. From the pool they have to choose they will call the closest one, not in terms of the ranking, but in terms of a physical distance

The Alternate List consists only of the Season's Best List (2020 and 2021) + winners from this season's Challengers.

The host can choose any of the first 10 names on that list. And if no one is available the next 10 names.

If I count correctly, Eva-Lotta is #8 on that list and Nicole #9. Josefin is only #20.
Above Eva-Lotta are: Wi, Paganini, Safonova, Yokoi, Yamashita, Park, Kawabe.
I would say Yamashita or Park (who also have no spots) would have been the most deserving for this spot, especially Park who skated so brilliantly at US Classic.

The original assignments were:
The top 12 from Worlds got two, the SB top 24 (both 2020/2021 seasons) and the WS top 24 are guaranteed one (but all in the SB and most of the WS got two).

Maybe Yamashita or Park will get the spot for the GP in Japan since Olga Mikutina WD. It seems logic they will give it to someone closer to host country, as Baron Vladimir explained above. (I have no clue where Yamashita or Park trains now though, so maybe they are not in Asia at all).

NHK will be a total different story. Japan and Korea already have three women there so Yamashita and Park are not possible. But Russia has only two. So Frolova, Samodurova and Nugumanova will jump into the Alternate List in front of Kiibus. It will be interesting to see how that one plays out.

But Russian women has not maximum quota at NHK. Only Trusova and Usacheva are assigned there, so there is room for a 3rd Russian.

That said, I am a bit surprised that Bradie's spot in Italy didn't go to a 3rd Italian girl. As a host, Italy has the option to have three host picks (regardless of the Alternate List), they only have two at the moment.

Not at NHK. They only have two entries currently there, which is very they Russian women were brought up specifically for that open spot.

For the record, the list this year includes the best score from 2020-21 or 2019-20, since so many competitions were cancelled. So Eva-Lotta has a 184.27 and Nicole has 182.71. It's a very small difference, so it's not surprising that they choose the skater who trains closer (Oberstdorf is significantly closer than Tallinn). And as others have already pointed out, for the GP Italy spot, several girls from Japan and South Korea were ahead of both Eva-Lotta and Nicole. So no, it doesn't seem like they are avoiding small fed skaters.

Her ISU bio says that she practices at Val Gardena too. And Oberstdorf is close to Italy.
