As somebody who tends to like Russian skaters, I was intrigued when I noticed that for the second week in a row we have a Men's skater representing America who has a Russian name - Maxim Zharkov. So, I looked up his ISU Bio to try to find out more info about him.

I have made no secret on here that my first love is motorbike racing. So, when I saw where he was from, I immediately thought "a Russian kid who is from Daytona?! Yep, I'm definitely going to be cheering him on!"

Then I saw the names of his coaches and choreographer, and the penny dropped.

I take it Maxim is the son of the Ice Dance partnership Svetlana Serkeli and Andrei Zharkov. (2nd at 1986 Junior Worlds).

It's always great to see the children of skaters following them onto the ice.

So, even more reason to hope he does well!

US skating has an embarrassment of riches with sons of former Russian (or former Soviet Union) skaters who have emigrated to the states:

in juniors, Ilia Malinin (Tatiana Malinina/Roman Skorniakov), Maxim Naumov (Elizaveta Shishkova/VadimNaumov), Daniel Martynov (Yevgeny Martynov) and Maxim Zharkov, as you noted; in seniors Andrew Torgashev (Ilona Melnichenko/Artem Torgashev).

And the parents tend to coach their boys as well. At least at the start. We are blessed to have so many skaters born here of emigrants from countries with strong skating traditions

Firstly, I didn't realise that Andrew Torgashev was also a "son of". So, that was news. Looking them up there now, I found it interesting that Andrew's parents were not partners on the ice - they competed in different categories! Ilona Melnichenko was a Pairs skater from the Ukraine, and Artem Torgashev was an Ice Dancer from Russia. So, kinda like Ekaterina Bobrova and Andrei Deputat nowadays (but with the roles reversed).

But the cool thing is that when I looked at Maxim Zharkov's ISU Bio yesterday, Artem Torgashev was listed as part of his coaching team. And Artem finished just behind Maxim's parents in the 1986 Junior Worlds, and then took over from them as the silver medallists in 1987. So, it is kinda fitting that they are still close 35 years later!

I hadn't come across Ilya Malinin (or should that be "Malininin"? ) before last week. But, it was because of Ted telling us about his parentage that I decided to look up the background of this week's American skaters.

Incidentally, the other Men's skater this week, Kai Kovář, is the son of Czech Pairs skater Karel Kovář (2nd in Nationals in 1986 and 1987). But, the interesting thing is Karel's partner, Dagmar Kovářová, who I assume is his sister. Her record at Nationals is impressive. With Jozef Komár, she was was silver medallist in 1982; champion in 1983; and silver medallist again in 1984. Then she didn't compete at Nationals in 1985 (presumably because she was breaking in a new partner). Then she came back with in 1986 with Karel, winning the silver medal again in that season and the following season.

Kai (or Karel Junior)'s Mum was a show skater. And both his parents are on his coaching team. So, between his parents and his (presumed) aunt, he has good pedigree too!

I haven't come across Naumov and Martynov yet, so I'll have to keep an eye out for them.

And, although he is primarily an Ice Dancer, we can't talk about American skaters with Russian skating parents without mentioning Anthony Ponomarenko, the son of 1992 European, World and Olympic Ice Dance champions Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko.

The problem with having parents who were successful skaters is that it brings an extra pressure to live up to them. That is why I felt sorry for Ksenia Makarova (daughter of 1980 and 1981 Pairs Junior World Champions, and 1987 and 1989 European Champions, Larisa Selezneva and Oleg Makarov). Because, although she was a very good skater, she never quite made it to the top positions. And, although Eteri Tutberidze's competitive career didn't get very far, imagine the pressure her successful coaching career has now put on her daughter, Ice Dancer Diana Davis.

(And before somebody protests that this discussion is about American skaters with Russian skating parents, both Ksenia and Diana were born in America and came up through the American system before switching to Russia).

Before I go, I just want to go back to Ted adding an extra syllable to Malinin's name last week. The funniest part of this is that, later on, he removed a syllable from "Anna Karenina". So, it was as if he had transferred it from one name to the other!

i'm as confused as this Habanera version, but pop aside Arlet was solid and i enjoyed him a lot; also i think Anna Levandi (also Eva Lotta Kiibus's coach) is a good and underestimated coach.

I must be the only one who likes Stromae's Carmen, but it is mostly because Milena Baldassarri (a beautiful Italian rhythmic gymnast) had a beautiful clubs routine to it so (shrugs)

P.S. PSA, don't watch both figure skating and rhythmic gymnastics. So much pain.
