For the past week or so, I have been looking around on the websites / social media pages of the Fed and the various clubs that operate out of the host rink to see if I can find anything connected with this event (Entry Lists; Results pages; livestream links), and everything has come a blank. To the extent that I was starting to doubt whether the event is actually happening.

However, in the past couple of days, the venue has put up posts advertising the event on their Facebook pages:

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=586855516807858
https://www.facebook.com/ZayedSportsAcademy/videos/figure-skating-preparing-for/116551411311699/

And on their Instagram pages:

https://www.instagram.com/p/CpsQzWpOm_e/
https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpu_7YLpoeQ/

So, I guess it is happening.

But, my goodness, they are making it difficult to find out any information! :drama:

Given that one of my kids, Stefania Yakovleva (CYP), trains in Dubai (which is 80 miles from Abu Dhabi), I would dearly like to know if she is taking part. Because that could influence whether I concentrate on this event, or the one in Łódź, Poland.

It should be the link for the livestream

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6mIo2BSk-k

Hallelujah! :cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

I love the way that they have the day's schedule as the thumbnail for each of the livestreams.

Going by what is shown in the thumbnails, it looks like there is a bumper entry. Well, of girls, anyway.

  • 17 in Intermediate Novice Ladies
  • 1 in Intermediate Novice Men
  • 41 in Basic Novice Ladies
  • 3 in Basic Novice Men
  • 2 in Advanced Novice Men
  • 19 in Advanced Novice Ladies
  • 5 in Junior Men
  • 18 in Junior Ladies
  • 1 in Senior Men
  • 6 in Senior Ladies

Now it would be nice for them to tell us who they are...

It would be wonderful if we knew the skaters competing.

And here is the Entries / Results page for the Interclub part of the event, which starts in 30 minutes from now:

https://live.fsresults.info/2022-2023/AbuDhabi/Interclub/index.htm

It's going to be a long day for the organisers. Just over 14 hours from the first segment starting to the last segment ending.

And with the 12 hour limit on YouTube, that means that if the livestream gets archived, it will cut off during the final group of the Junior Ladies SP. So none of the Senior programmes will survive the cull.

Hope this helps

Day 1 of the Abu Dhabi Classic Trophy is starting now with the Intermediate Novices. 17 girls and 1 boy. We have a group of 5 girls; followed a group of 6 girls; followed by a group of 6 girls and 1 boy.

Normally when there is a long gap between one competition starting and the next one starting, I would do separate posts. But, because we have a combined group, this is a combined post.

Oh, it would be so much easier if the boy was skating first...

Livestream for the Intermediate Novice competitions is now on air.

My goodness. 😲 It took me ages to realise that the Hungarian girl that started off the event was skating to the "Star Wars" main theme! :drama:

What a beautful re-interpretation of it!

And what a beautiful white dress. Given the theme, I suppose she is playing Princess Leia. But, frankly, that dress is far more beautiful than what Carrie Fisher wore!

And it was a beautiful skate too. Unfortunately, with her going first, we don't yet know how good it is relative to the other skaters.

Straight onto her fellow Hungarian, but who is from a different club.

Boy alert!

By the way, in case you are wondering, Princess Leia from Hungary finished in 5th position.

We move from the Intermediate Novices to the Basic Novices. And I am afraid it is the same format again, with 36 girls, and then 2 boys going at the end.

We have two groups of 7 girls; then a resurfacing; then two groups of 8 girls; then another resurfacing; then a group of 6 girls and 2 boy.

How cute was Skater #4, from Israel?!

I loved everything about that programme.

Admittedly, I was worried that she was tempting fate by skating to "The Winner Takes It All" by ABBA. But, it took her straight into the lead!

I know we've only had 4 skaters, but she was only the second skater to go clean. The other, local girl Skater #3, is currently in last position.

EDIT: Skater #4 was the first of back-to-back Israeli girls, albeit from different clubs. Unfortunately the second, Skater #5, just had a nightmare skate, with three deductions, totalling 1.50 points. Yet, she went into penultimate position, 1.72 points ahead of the Emirati girl that went clean.

And that, kids, is the paradox of figure skating.

Awww that was lovely.

As local girl Skater #8 was coming off the ice, somebody in the audience shouted "You were amazing!"

It's nice to see these young skaters getting such support from the audience.

The judges appreciated her too. She went into 3rd position!

And we had a funny moment as the Israeli skater following her was coming off the ice.

Skater #9, from the same club as the current leader, was gathering up the gifts that had been thrown onto the ice. She had this armful of cuddly toys, but there was something small still on the ice. And she couldn't find it. And somebody from the boards was trying to give her directions.

It was like a sketch from a 1930's comedy film!

She did eventually find it.

Anyway, she went into 5th position.

It's taken a while, but Skater #4 has finally been deposed as the leader.

Skater #10, from Georgia, has taken a large lead of 6.79 points.

Oh, and she was skating to that French song that I absolutely love, but has been annoying me for the past few months because I can't remember who sings it or what it is called. (It's often hard enough to make out lyrics in my own language, never mind another! )

I took a bit too long doing things during the resurfacing, so I am currently running about 10 minutes behind.

Erm, I might be mis-interpreting things, but it looks like the Israeli girl that kicked off the group, Skater #15, forgot to take off her team jacket before doing her programme.

She was wearing a lovely green dress. And then this black jacket lying open on top of it.

Unfortunately, she got a 0.50 point deduction. Don't worry, it wasn't for a costume infringement. She did actually have a fall.

She was skating to "I Want to Break Free" by Queen. So, naturally, I loved it!

She went into 9th position.

Aha! Is the sibling theme from Łódź slipping in here?

The long time early leader, Skater #4 from Israel, has just been pushed out of the current podium positions by a skater from the same club with the same surname.

And the similarity in their first names makes me wonder if they are maybe twins.

Personally, I preferred Skater #4. But, that is a given, seeing as she was skating to an ABBA song that I love; whereas Skater #17 was skating to "Bla, Bla, Bla Cha Cha Cha", a song I hate!

Anyway, Skater #17 goes into 3rd position, 1.60 points ahead of Skater #4.

That was funny.

One of the local girls (who, going by her name, I suspect is actually a British ex-pat) finished her programme, and then went to one of the gates to leave the ice. And she pushed, and she pushed, and she pushed. But it was not for budging!

Then she looked around, and realised that the gate she was supposed to go out of was at the other end of the rink!

Unfortunately, she went into last position.

However, she was immediately pushed up to penultimate position when the next skater (a local girl with a Chinese name from a different club) slotted in behind her.

Wow! It was like there was a party going on in the rink when Skater #31 was on at the start of the final Group. We could barely hear the music for all the screaming and cheering! :drama:

And after she got her scores, a little girl came in with a massive pile of cuddly toys, and when she dropped them on top of her, she was nearly completely buried under them!

I take it she is the most local skater of the whole event.

Hang on, the next two skaters are from the same club. It will be interesting to see if they experience the same amount of support.

Anyway, she went into 29th position.

In a word, yes!

The next two girls, Skaters #32 and #33, got the same amount of screaming and cheering from the audience.

When Skater #32 sat down to get her scores, she was sitting on her own (the girl before her had 2 coaches sitting with her). But, she didn't seem to mind. The wee girl that had come in with the cuddly toys for the previous skater had 1 cuddly toy and, rather than go over and hand it to her, she threw it over the corner of the rink. And the skater caught it perfectly!

Skater #32 went into 31st position.

Skater #33 was the youngest of the 3 girls, and Skater #32 went and sat with her. By now Skater #32 was carrying 2 cuddly toys. Skater #33 also had 2 cuddly toys. And they started swapping toys! It was cute!

Anyway, Skater #33 went into 12th position.
