Both the Dutch pair and the ID couple missing Europeans are here, as are 4 Dutch junior women. Exciting! Quite a few interesting entrees (will probably change as it's early days yet). I hope there will be a stream - there usually is in Oberstdorf!

Mmn. I'll need to think about the paying option. It is a lot of money for a senior B, even if one with interesting skaters!

Too bad they won't stream on the sportdeutschland site.

Agreed. My kids from Cyprus, Marilena and Stefania, are both going and I would have loved to see them again after their great results from last week at Euros an the EYOF respectively. But, I'm not paying to watch this event when there is a choice of other events with decent entries that I can watch for free on YouTube (the Sofia Trophy, and the Nordic Championships).

Yet again, this sport shoots itself in the foot.

I think it's such a pity, but I totally agree. I would have loved to watch but paying for it when there are other events for free.

I´m not that interested in watching this competition, it is the technical scores which I find most interesting. LOL. Virtanen is again trying to get the FS technical minimum score for Worlds. Unless he adds more difficulty into his freeskate, I cannot see him reaching the goal. Or maybe I¨m calculating something wrong? I believe his fs base value is under 57 points and with that content - even if he happens to skate without any mistakes - he cannot reach the necessary 64 points or can he?

You are right. I think he has said he is practising 3A and imo he needs it done clean to get those scores and high levels from the the other elements and clean jumps. But you can compare to Janna and Iida. Janna has reached 68+ which would be enough for WC men and Iida very close, 63+ in juniors woth less elements. But they usually get level4 from spins and have 3lz 3t done.

It´s possible to reach it without a 3A, but you need to be very clean, most likely have all level 4 spins and good GOE on jumps. Having a 3Lz-3T would also make it easier.

I remember Sondre Oddvoll Bøe having this same issue with reaching the FS TES. He was really close at EC 2019 where he reached 60.64 in TES, but he had two costly mistakes. His 3Lz-3T got marked under on the toeloop, and then the biggest mistake was on the next combo - a 3F, he popped the second jump so it was only a 3F-1T. I think it was supposed be a 3F-2T. So he did not only lose BV, but got a bit of negative GOE on the first combo. If he had landed the combo with great GOE and not popped the second combo it would most likely just be enough.

A skate that I do remember getting the TES with only 2A and great GOE was Nikolaj Majorov at EC 2020. He reached 68 points, and almost 8 points was +GOE alone, 60 points on BV, he actually had a small mistake: 2A-euler<<-+3S, so apparently he had a underrotated euler? 😅 But he only got -0,49 on GOE on that, and the rest was perfect. I remember that was a inspiring moment to see someone get such good TES without the 3A.

I do remember this skate, he really had big and explosive jumps so he got well rewarded.

Valtter however, don´t have the same great height on jumps, so he will struggle getting the same GOE, but he can still work on getting the maximum on every element. His spins and step sequence can bring him some extra. I actually thought that Valtter would make the TES at Euros after the great start, it went really well and he was rewarded for it, but then the mistakes came towards the end and he lost a lots of points.

I see he got 62.71 in TES in GP Finland. He had two spins only with level 3, and a lutz and double axel with -GOE. Those details could be it. He didn´t have a 3Lz-3T but a 3Lz-2T. If he kept the same layout, but worked on the spins levels and better GOE on the lutz and axel, maybe it´s the key for him? If a 3A will help or not will depend on him rotating it. If he falls on attempt it could easily make him struggle with rest of the program, so that it won´t benefit. I think it was also a reason he took out the quad from the FS, because it was causing him more trouble then benefiting him.

If i´m not mistaken, I think there is a Spanish skater who reached the minimum in the current years without a 2A as well. He had a very nice and clean skate. I´m not sure if I´m mixing up with someone else or if it actually was Tomás Sabaté, because he has a 3A now.

It was indeed Tomàs-Llorenç Guarino Sabaté, he got his FS minimums at Nebelhorn Trophy last season without a 3A and even with a mistake on a 3F+2T.

Of course, this is also highly dependent on the goodwill of the judges who are (unfairly) often much stricter with "small Fed"-skaters, and that's especially important in Valtter's case, as his BV is almost 2 points lower than Tomàs-Llorenç's BV back then.

Interestingly the one advanced novice girl who is skating outside of competition, Adelina Voroteliak, skated for Ukraine before. She moved to train in Oberstdorf after the war started and was even added to the Bavarian state team back in June, so it seems she will be staying in Germany permanently.

Overall, a good level across the women's novice competitions, with a number of 3Lz, 3F and 3Lo attempts, in combination or as solo jumps.

Another example would be Luc Maierhofer. http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00035069.htm
As far as I've seen, he was only doing 2A lately at least.
