2023 Bellu Memorial

The 2023 Bellu Memorial will take place Feb 22-26, 2023, in Bucharest - Otopeni, Romania at the Allianz Tiriac Arena. This international event will feature the Singles (Women and Men) at the Junior and Senior levels.

The competition will be conducted in accordance with the 2022 ISU Constitution and General Regulations, the 2022 ISU Special Regulations & Technical Rules Single & Pair Skating and Ice Dance, and relevant ISU Communications.

Has no one noticed yet? This seems to be Eliska's comeback tournament after the knee surgery she had in December
As Nikola Rychtarikova is also there, Czech Fed might want to have a skate off for Worlds? Not sure if both have all minimums tbh.

Also Tara Prasad is paying Europe a visit after her wonderful home event at 4CC. Same applies to Jocelyn Hong. (Unless the both competed in Europe sind 4CC already during the last 2 weeks and I missed it)

Oona Ounasvuori did a lot of competitions in 2023 already iirc. Does she skate here for minimums? At her current form, she could challenge Tornaghi, Sauter, Hong and maybe the Czech ladies for podium?

The Men otoh don't seem as exciting here, Jari Kessler also competed quite a lot this year and I think he still needs at least one minimum score. He's coming directly from Tallinn. Petr Kotlarik (or choas-Peter as I affectionately call him) also competes a lot and might need scores.

In general, those entries can ofc still change by quite a bit. I'm really surprised about the group of Turkish Juniors here and if they really can attend, I wish them all the best and a nice stay

Okay, so, it seems of the men only Zlatkov already has both minimums. Kessler needs the free, and the rest need both.

Of the women, it seems that only Doboszova, Ounsavuori, and Brezinova already have the minimums. Sauter, Prasad and Rychtarikova need the short, and Grigorova and Hong need the free. Everyone else needs both.

Oona Ounasvuori will be the 2nd subsitute from Finns. There are Janna Jyrkinen and Olivia Lisko ahead of her (Finland's fed's rules are clear, also fair IMO) and they publish an updated list about this). To get the spot she needs 202 and her technical content is not enough to get it. To be first subsitute she needs about 184, it is realistic but needs to be 100 % clean and get 3lz-3t done. She can do it but mostly she doubles the second jump. But Olivia has also improved her SBs and she is planned to go to challenge cup and Janna too. So there is much pressure on Oona.

Day 1 of the Bellu Memorial is starting now with a Chicks skating treeble-bill. A group of 4 boys; followed by 20 younger girls (two groups of 10); followed by 15 older girls (a group of 7; then a group of 8).

As the Time Schedules aren't working, I don't know when the resurfacings will be.

Hearing the theme from "The Magnificent Seven" first thing in the morning always sets you up for a good day of competition.

And the first of the Ukrainians is skating to "Hava Nagila"!!!

These little boys have set the bar high in terms of music! It's going to be hard for the rest of the skaters today to keep up this level.

Ach, this is not fair. The second Ukrainian boy was starting his programme by kneeling down. And there was a long delay in his music starting.

His poor legs woud have been getting frozen!

It was funny though, because while he was waiting, we could hear a baby crying in the background!

Didn't know the music that Skater #3 used. But the other three had great music!!!

The older skaters could learn a lot from these little boys when it cones to choosing music!

I know that I don't normally approve of the skates being covered, but I did like what the final Ukrainian girl, did.

Skater #19 had red tights that started below the knee and covered her skates, and I think it was so that it would look like she was wearing red boots. I don't know if the red tights were attached to skin-coloured tights, of if they were elasticated at the top to stop them falling down. But, they really looked the part.

In contrast, her fellow skater from the Odessa club that went directly before her, Skater #18, had an all black costume with a black dress and black tights. But, she had white skates. And they looked really out of place. Of course, I realise that she may not have black skates. But if her tights had gone over the skates, it would have just completed the look.

Sorry, I posted prematurely. I didn't notice that there was a 2 hour break to proceedings!

The camera moved away from the sign, and I pressed "Post Reply". But, it turned out that the cameraman was moving the camera so that he could film his mate while chatting to him!
