2023 Dragon Trophy & Tivoli Cup

The 2023 Dragon Trophy & Tivoli Cup will take place Feb 9-12, 2023, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, at the Hala Tivoli. This international event will feature all the singles (Women and Men) discipline at the Novice, Junior and Senior levels.

The competition will be conducted in accordance with the 2022 ISU Constitution and General Regulations, the 2022 Special Regulations and Technical Rules for Single Skating, as well as all relevant ISU Communications.

Although the Ephesus Cup has been cancelled due to the aftermath of the earthquakes in the east of Turkey, there are still two other Senior B events happening this week. For the Ice Dancers, there is the Egna Dance Trophy in Egna / Neumarkt, the South Tyrol, Italy. And for the Singles skaters, there is this event in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Action from the Tivoli Cup starts at high noon local time on Thursday, with the Dragon Trophy starting at a similar time on Friday (there is a monster Intermediate Novice session on Friday morning, consisting of 1 boy and 48 girls! ).

I had kinda hoped that one of my local skaters, Sam McAllister, would be here, as he has a good record at this event. (Hey, it was where he won his first overseas Gold Medal, in the 2014 Advanced Novice Men's comeptition). But, alas, he is not entered this year.

Nevertheless, it should be an interesting event.

Day 1 of the Tivoli Cup is about to start, and it is all about the Chicks and Cubs skaters. Chicks first, with 11 younger girls (a group of 5 girls, then a group of 6 girls); followed by 20 older girls (a group of 6 girls; then two groups of 7 girls); and then a solitary boy.

Unfortunately, the Time Schedule links are taking us to 404 error pages, so I don't know for certain when the resurfacings are. But, I suspect that there will be one after the younger girls, and then the next one after the boy.

First time I've come across that happening.

We had a couple of false starts with the trumpets. They were first played while the Zamboni was still on the ice. But they were taken off in the middle of playing.

And then when they were played at the right time, they got cut off momentarily in the middle. But, they resumed after a few seconds

Awwww!!! The skater from Italy who finished off the opening group is just the cutest wee girl!!! And such a happy kind of a person too!

She also has the longest name I've come across in my time watching figure skating

I loved the way that, as well as her coach, she had another older skater sitting with her while waiting for her results.

She goes into 2nd position, just half a point behind the Hungarian girl that is currently leading.

You know, I always love watching the competitions in Estonia, because the Estonian wee girls are so supportive of each other.

Well, we're getting the same here with the Slovenian wee girls.

Skater #9 had two other wee girls with her (Skaters #5 and #11 are from the same club, so it was probably them). And when she got her scores and went into penultimate position, she was upset, and the coach gave her a massive big hug.

Unfortunately, because we were watching this heartwarming moment, it meant we missed the start of the next skater's programme.

I take it that the two Zhang girls that are representing Austria are related. They are from the same club, anyway.

Oh, it's a pity that there was an Austrian from a different club skating in between them. It would have been nice to see them back-to-back.

Well, there's not much between them in terms of scores. Just 0.57 points!

I am so sorry. The sole boy that we have skating today is competing at Cubs level, not Chicks level. And, as such, he is coming on after the resurfacing, alongside the first group of the younger Cubs girls. 21 of them, arranged into three groups of 7 girls.

Day 2 starts very early with a marathon Intermediate Novice session. 48 girls, followed by 1 boy. Three groups of 7 girls; followed by three groups of 8 girls; followed by the boy.

EDIT: It's be swapped around. It's now the boy going first, and then the girls.​

OK, change of plan. The boy is going before the girls instead of after them.

Actually, it makes sense doing it like this. Means he doesn't have to wait around half a day to skate. Or wait for 8 girls to do their programmes after doing his Warm-Up. He can instead get everything over and done with in 10 minutes.

I don't know what's going on with the graphics. During the Group 2 Warm-Up, the list of upcoming skaters being displayed was for Group 3 of last night's Cubs I Ladies FS.

And now the names being displayed in the corner are for Group 3 of this competition, when we are actually only on Group 2.

But, by the time I wrote this, it had been fixed. It was only the first skater in this group that had the wrong name.

Unfortunately, I had to take a break after the first skater of Group 3. So, I am running behind (now that we have had the second resurfacing, I am just 10 minutes behind).

I've just finished Group 3, and wanted to comment about Skater #26. She was skating to a very strange cover of Sia's "Titanium". I love that song, but I really didn't like this version of it.

And the skating gods clearly didn't appreciate it either, because she had a nightmare skate. Three falls, so 1.5 points in deductions. And into last position.

I have to admit, I did get emotional during that programme. Because hearing that song always makes me think of a skater I adopted, but who has been retired for a few years now. Ironically, she has never skated to "Titanium". The reason that song makes me think of her is because I used a cover of it as the accompanying music for a fan video I made for her.

I miss her.

I'm emotional in general at the moment anyway, because I have been spending a lot of time keeping up with news about people from my skater's country that have been caught up in the earthquakes. And it has been very upsetting because, apart from one glimmer of light, it has all been bad news.

After this morning's Intermediate Novice marathon, we now move start the Dragon Trophy, i.e. the ISU part of the event. Both Advanced Novice SP segments, followed by both Junior SP segments. In each case, boys first, then girls.

We start with a group of 3 boys. Which is actually now down to 2 boys, because the Australian that was due to start at #2 has withdrawn.

I was watching Nijne van ERP (NED), and as soon as the music started, I thought "I know that music". But, I couldn't place what it was. It started off as a piano solo, and then burst into life when the orchestra came in.

And it was just before the burst that it dawned on me - "It's the current Formula 1 theme music!"
