I just finished watching a figure skating competition in China and was blown away by the upcoming talent in the ladies discipline. Their Juniors are behind only Japan, and maybe Korea (if you leave out Jia Shin, they could even be better ). I was more impressed with their girls here than what I saw at Junior Cup in USA.
China is quietly developing some upcoming stars for the next Olympic cycle. What I love about China is that they are going about it in their own unique way. They do not prioritize triple triple combos. Not one triple triple executed in the free skates I watched. Instead, they would go for triple double combos as the first two jumping passes and then a triple 2A 2A combo in the second half. Very different from the 3Lz 3T and 3Lz 2T 2Lo layouts I see in Korea and Japan. They seem to prioritize correct technique. Also, the skating skills were quite good. The programs so different from what is seen internationally. Different music which was refreshing.
The winner in the Senior category was a 14 year old skater who skated cleanly and did a 2A 3T combo and the 2A 2A sequence in the second half. Shiqui Gao. 190+ (TES score around 73 ). I hope to see her at JGP. Shuxian was second with a score of over 180. She is 13 years old. I wonder if she is eligible a for JGP.
Also, the winner in the Junior’s field was Yihan Wang. She scored over 190. Her jumps were so good! Very high triples. She is also 14 years old and another athlete I hope to see at JGP.
Those were the top three highlights. But, lots of other young girls scoring over 170 in both Senior and Junior disciplines. I’m very confused as to what the difference is as they are overpopulated by girls in the 13-15 year range. I don’t understand the difference in categories. It is like the athletes just pick a category. It was like watching two Junior events. But, one had a step sequence
Does China have spots? They boycotted the Junior Worlds cause it was held in Taiwan. So, I have no idea if they have any spots internationally due to this boycott.
Also, the winner of advanced Novice, Jin Chenxi was good too. She almost scored over 90 in the free skate. I believe only two skaters scored 90+ internationally. She was only 11 years old. Nice clean skating. Wish there was more interest in Chinese figure skating.
I only had a few hours and only watched the girls as they seemed to have the most competitors.
