No Lia Cho in Junior Girls ☹️
I wanted to see her at this event.
(Does this mean she is competing at NextGen instead? But, that event should only be for JGP eligible athletes right?)

Rose and Uliana will be interesting in Senior Women. Will they do NextGen and this event or just focus on Senior category this season?

For @4everchan At least Conrad’s sister Amelia, is on the list. Hopefully, this will soften the blow you experienced with Conrad’s retirement.

Happy to see Grace on this list 😊

Damien and Matthew, as well for Senior Men 😉

I hope she's competing at NextGen considering Annika Behnke and Kole Sauve are competing here, but only in Junior Singles 😟 Hopefully they're still together for Pairs and are competing at NextGen too!

Probably NextGen and this one. They both have a good chance of a JGP spot. And if they do well here, hopefully Skate Canada will give them a Challenger.

Happy to see them along with Ethan :) Plus Brian Chiem (Antony Cheng posted a preview of his FS here) The schedule initially had 2 Senior Men competing, so there will be a full podium at least. Hoping Matthew does well so he can finally get a Challenger after his injury last season.

Let’s hope that the reason is because Next Gen is a week prior. So, back to back competitions might be too much.

I have a feeling for Uliana/Rose, this is a back up, in case they skate poorly at NextGen, they still have this event for Seniors.

Good observation about Kole/Annika. Hoping it is cause Pairs back and forth is too much. Makes sense to do Pairs at NextGen and then their solo events at Wild Rose

So domestically, Lia must compete as a Junior this year, and Lulu must compete as a Senior since they won their respective divisions last year?

Here's the rules (from here):

No one may compete in the same discipline (singles, pairs, ice dance) in the same Novice Event at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships more than three times.

The winner or the winning pair or ice dance team of a Novice Event discipline at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships is not eligible for the same Event discipline again.

One of a pair or ice dance team placing first, second or third in a Senior Canadian Event discipline may not enter the same Event discipline in the Junior Category at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships with a different partner in a subsequent year.
So Lulu could stay as a Junior if she wanted to, but considering she has the second highest international score of the Canadian women, moving up makes sense. She could be on the podium as a Senior. Anthony Paradis stayed in Junior after winning in 2021-22 and only moved up to Senior domestically in 2023-24.

Lia has to move up as Novice champion (same with Novice Men's champion Kento Nakashima, who is competing as a Junior here.) Also there's a limit on how long a skater can compete as a Novice in a discipline (3 championships, or Skate Canada Trophy now.)

I added the last rule since I thought it was interesting.

What exactly is nextgen? On the skate Canada website it says it's a competition + camp but theres no other info. I'm assuming it's for junior and senior skaters? And a national event?

It's for the Skate Canada NextGen Team - here's the 2023-24 team on the current page https://skatecanada.ca/high-performance/nextgen/

The competition helps determine Junior Grand Prix spots. Some of them will have to be entered before the competition ends, since Riga has an entry deadline of July 25. But alternates can be shuffled for that since it isn't official until it's on the International Events page :)

Since Lia isn't eligible for the JGP yet, she'd be going for the experience and development. I'm waiting for them to post the information, I got all excited when I saw that they added a page for the Start Orders now, but it's still 'Information Coming Soon' 😣

Ohhh I see, thanks.
It's really upsetting how they moved the age to compete at junior so high. 😔
Do you think we will see Lia's new short and free program? Also even though she isn't eligible for JGP I'm pretty sure she can still compete domestically and nationally, thank God

The Junior international age limit has been 13 for quite a long time, it'll give her more time to develop and grow. She could have more opportunities to compete internationally at the Novice level if she continues at the level she has shown :)

As for if she'll have new programs there, not sure if she'll be part of the competition at NextGen. They've had skaters part of the NextGen team last season who didn't compete due to issues such as injuries.

They just posted the starting orders on the Skate Canada website, and luckily Lia Cho is competing along with Ksenia Krouzkevitch and Sandrine Blais.

Finished with the Senior Women Short. Uliana is in first at 54.85 with Rose close behind at 54.27. Grace Johnson is in 3rd at 47.15.

I'm sure I'll be tired of Voila by the end of the season, but I liked Uliana's program here. I want to see how she does with it at the next competition.

Rose kept her short program from last season. For her solo jump, she did a 3S instead of the 3Lz she did at Challenge/Nationals. I really liked her at Challenge, she still looks happy with Ravi. I'm not expecting her to win the free over Uliana if she's doing a 3S in the short since it could mean she needed to water down her content.

Rough short for Kole, 37.00 :( I think it was a fall on the 3F and then another fall on what was going to be the combo.

Rough for Damien too, he fell on the 3Lz and 3F so no combo. Fell out of his last spin as well. 2A was nice though and I enjoy his skating, 47.09

The announcer mixed up Brian Chiem with Matthew Newnham, Brian had a laugh about it 😅

Brian Chiem got a 3F+2T, fell on his 3A and step out/hand down on his 3Lz. Lots of energy in his step sequence, a little too much since he fell during it. He had a laugh at the end of his program, I don't think he's competed in a while. 48.86, I like his energy. Don't give him that sad boi music.

Oh the Pre-Novice Pairs team that had a Super Mario short have dolls of themselves in costume, that's adorable 😊
