Seniors seem to be a huge adjustment for Elizabeth and Alexei. Love the RD costumes but the music was not relatable and both skaters seemed to be struggling. Hoping they embrace their Spartacus!

Yet again, I have a scheduling conflict with the free dance, so here are my thoughts from the practices today:

In the first group, I expect to see Neset/Markelov, Lauriault/Le Gac, and the Mrazeks climb up after the FD. All three of them have very strong programs. Neset/Markelov and the Mrazeks in particular are such strong skaters, and these programs both have real "wow" moments, so I expect to see big scores for them. There's a really cool hydroglide move and stationary lift from Katerina and Daniel, and their speed and power is just remarkable. Neset and Markelov are also so good - I love their kneebend - and I like the intensity of this FD for them. I expect to see both teams shooting up in the rankings over the next few seasons. Lauriault/Le Gac aren't nearly as strong in terms of skating skills compared to the other two teams, but their free program is so much fun and I expect the crowd to go wild. I do hope they rework a few parts of it, because it feels like it ends a bit abruptly, but I love the concept.

Olivia and Tim have done a lot of work on their free dance, including modifying the lift that gave them trouble at Nebelhorn. I didn't get to see the full program, but it looks much improved overall. Fabbri/Ayer's FD isn't quite as strong as their RD - they just excel so much with that Elvis program but in the free get lost in the shuffle a little bit more. They are still wonderful basic skaters, but the RD overall looked more polished and powerful. Davis/Smolkin's FD is far stronger than their RD - in particular, Gleb does a very good job with his partnering and basic skating, and it's a unique program that will hopefully help them stand out with a lot of strong choreo and lift elements. The skating skills and speed are noticeably better in this program than in the RD. I'm not sold on Chock/Bates's FD - it's very technically difficult and they do a good job selling it, but it feels quite one-note the whole time. It's not bad, but it's not memorable either. However, I expect they will improve it a lot after this competition, as they always do. Fear/Gibson's FD isn't nearly as strong as their RD - the first half really exposes the skating skill issues. On their serpentine step, they were noticeably slower than other teams and Lilah's ankles were really shaky on some of those turns. However, the second half is a lot of fun. I think the music choices are great, and there are some amazing choreo moments, but I do want it to end with a little more pizzaz. Right now, they do the choreo step but it kind of fizzles out at the end. As long as they're clean, they will probably take the title here thanks to their RD lead, but I could easily see Chock and Bates winning the FD.

I also have some important costume news:

Olivia and Tim (with an e) have changed their costumes! Olivia is now in a spectacular white dress that is much more film-accurate (and flattering imo), and Tim is still in the Party City suit but there is no floppy orange handkerchief! We all cheered (except for the lovely folks running the WTF awards who have now lost a nominee).

Also, in both programs, Madi has one of the most gorgeous dresses I've ever seen and Evan is in a basic suit. Let the man wear sparkles, for heaven's sake! He looks like a financial advisor who got lost on the way to work.
And finally, happy birthday to Gage Brown! (Jean-Luc Baker gave him a shout-out on stream) :hb:
